Ben E King wrote this song originally for his former group, The Drifters. When their manager rejected the song he ended up recording the song himself making it making it into one the most enduring songs of the rock era.

🙌 🔥. Maybe the greatest single of its era. U can tell it sounds like a Drifters song (& the Drifters rejected it - were they hi? Gtfo). Words fail. Sublime. Pure art.

He was the lead singer for a group called the Drifters . They were the first black singing group to use String arraignments in their music. They were around in the sixties . Check out "There goes my baby" by the Drifters he sang the lead and also wrote it, one of their many hits. Another one was "Under the boardwalk and "On Broadway"

You forgot "Up On The Roof" and "Saturday Night At the Movies" and "Save The Last Dance For Me."
My youngest daughter, she's just 28, has had Stand By Me as her favourite song for about 20 years.

Yes using strings became a trend...the Shirelles' version of Carole King's [wi/ Gerry Goffin] "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" has an equally great string section solo in it...#1 in January 1961. Stand By Me was released in April 1961, after the Shirelles' song. There may have been Drifters songs with strings before that. Although the Drifters were around since the early 1950's their personnel completely changed by this time. They may have used strings on some of those records from the original members. But there were other African American singing groups before the Drifters that may have used strings on their songs in some capacity. But that's a lot of unpaid research lol. One African American group I can think of was the Platters...[strings on Twilight Time and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - check those out]. They used strings on several of their records in the 1950's. Drifters were certainly one of the most prominent though...I love the later combination of personnel and all of their records. Ultimately, the Temptations "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," [1972] seems half the record was based on the string arrangement, which was really cool.

Ben E. King was the lead singer of the Drifters. Another great group to check out. ( Under the Boardwalk, Up On A Roof, Spanish Harlem). Stand by Me was the theme song of the 1986 Stephen King movie by the same name. Ben E. King wrote this song and I believe performed for the movie.

Just after the movie " stand by me" came out in 1986 the DJ at the club I was a regular at played this song. I was up on the balcony over the dance floor and watched everyone( 100+ people) stop dancing and hold hands and sing along with the song. It brought a tear to my eyes. Best memory of that club ever.

This song is Ben E. King's biggest hit song ever!!! He wrote this song before he left the r&b group, The Drifters. This song originally peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and it peaked at the #1 spot on the Billboard R&B chart back in 1961. The song became a Top 10 hit all over again back in 1986 thanks to the coming of age dramatic film of the same.

Lieberman and Stoller were a songwriting team with many hits to their credit. From the early 5o's, their song HOUND DOG was originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton. Later, Elvis turned it into rock-n-roll gold during his massive popularity of his early career. He often sorted through their songs for material to record, which would include LOVE ME HOUND DOG, LOVING YOU, and JAILHOUSE ROCK. Other songs like
ON BROADWAY, KANSAS CITY, YOUNGBLOOD and others, would be covered by many acts over the years. They were later inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame.
