This is why I stayed with a Ram 2500. It’s GVW IS 10,000. Plus it gets me out of the PA diesel idle laws so my labs can have air conditioning when I am out of the vehicle. 😅😅😅
Again I say, great work sir. I’ve been a “Legal” Class A driver for about 25 years now… Hoping there’s a statute of limitation on all of the prior years😉 Bless’ns to ya, Tedd
Well done on the explanation..... 4.5 million safe miles out there on the concrete seas... have had many many SHP from Ohio give our yearly safety meeting and you are at the top of the 40+years of watching and learning...
Correction: You do not need a med card if you are participating in INTRAstate commerce and based on your configuration do not require a CDL. You absolutely do need a med card when participating in INTERstate commerce. Good roll up info though.
Almost every state in the country has adopted the same rules for INTRASTATE commerce. Check the list of your state to see. Even if you don't leave the state, most of them still require it. Here is a couple links. www.fmcsa.dot.gov/faq/am-i-required-have-medical-certificate-if-i-only-operate-cmv-my-home-state-intrastate-commerce www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/do-i-need-usdot-number States that adopted the same rules These states include: Alabama Alaska Arizona California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Missouri Montana New Jersey New York Nebraska Nevada North Carolina Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Puerto Rico South Carolina Texas Utah Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming
@@FirewoodattheFurnace thanks for the links, I will review. I had this discussion with a NY DOT compliance officer and he assured me that I don't need to maintain a log or have a med card for intrastate commerce with a non-CDL liscence commercial vehicle.
Hey Brad, I’ve had my class a cdl and medical card since 18. I really appreciate all of the information you are talking about in this series. Can’t wait to hear more about it! It’s definitely nice to have a refresher every now and again
Always good to get information straight from the horses mouth (not that you are a horse but as big as one - LOL). Thanks for clearing up some misconception on the rules of the road - looking forward to the next installment. Stay safe.
Hey Brad! Really appreciate you putting this series together for us! I don’t have the need for this currently where I’m not doing any firewood at the moment but I’m glad to hear about the information and will keep in mind going forward. Thanks for having us over to visit! 🔥💯👍. Andrew from NB :)
In Canada, if you have a CDL, you are required to get a medical exam periodically based on your age. Less than 45, every 5 years, 45-65 every 3 years, over 65 yearly.
There is a certain condition where you need a med card when operating a commercial vehicle that does not require a CDL liscence. You will always need a med card when your configuration requires a CDL liscence.
Thank you Brad for more clarifications on this. Would you mind elaborating on "for hire". I thought that I read that firewood is an "exempt" commodity. So does this mean that if you deliver firewood you are not technically "for hire"? Also if you are deemed "for hire" do you then need an MC number as well? Thanks again!
not for hire simply means that you are hauling for yourself, or for no compensation. If you are making money then you are for hire. MC numbers are for haulers traveling across state lines. So it depends, most states don't allow firewood to be transported across state lines unless it is kiln dried.
Wonderful video!! Thanks again for the information. I have always been told where to go never knew there was a way to look up the docs!! Also had to rewatch and listen cuz i thought you said had the little red truck not have lol. Thanks again Brad!!
Good wording here in Canada 🇨🇦 we got to pay for medical 🏥 exam out off our back pocket. Our license are in # like semi my is class 1 go on weight you are driving on the road and highway. We got almost the same thing for farmer 👩🌾 and-fishing here your vehicle got a F ON vehicle plate show that your a farmer or fishing . 😊
Excellent explanation, especially the exception of exemption!🤣 All kidding aside, this series is going to be helpful to so many of us, great job thanks!
These are very helpful. Thing I am curious about is how the weight works. If I have a 14,000 pound gross trailer and a 8800 pound gross three-quarter ton truck how do they decide whether or not you were overloaded? How do they determine how much weight is to be on the truck on the front or back axle of the trailer, I am also interested in learning about bridge law.
That is a big topic. I specialized in size and weight and there are alot of variable from state to state regarding weight. You have to comply with gross combination weight which is the total weight of both, axle weights, tire weight ratings, and as you stated inner and outer bridge. Bridge is the distance between the center of a group of axles. It can be just 2 or up to however many you have. You then take the number of axles, and the distance between them and compare it to your states bridge chart. That will tell you the weight allowed over that group of axles.
You also need a UCR for transporting across state lines and if you don't put a name on your doors you can register your vehicle on F350 does not need or a medical card your registered as private use and it's not over $10,005.26 126000 you do not need a CDL you do not need a CDL if you have a 5500 Dodge Ram as long as the trailer and tractor in the weight of the truck is all under 26,000 lbs you do not need a CDL
Or you can put Not For Hire on your truck it's none of their damn business what you're doing with the truck as long as you put not for hire and you register as private that is the law I have it straight from the head of dot of the whole entire nation good friend of mine
If you are over 10,000 pounds and you are in commerce, 390.21 requires you to have your name and DOT number on both sides of the vehicle. Written in a contrasting color and visible from 50 feet. It doesnt matter what weight you register it at, it goes by the Manufacturers Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
This has been a good series 👍🏼 Somebody should send these last couple videos to Mike Morgan, since he thinks he's above the law and superior to EVERYBODY in everything that he does.
hi there another informative show .have no idea what cat. i fall into . but well done , if you just put this on you maybe still near your computer , do you plan to be in the wood yard today ? best to all john
Farm tags rule vary wildly from state to state the 2 I know for sure. Arizona no health or CDL not matter weight. Okla 54k max weight and all CDL and health card. Texas loves to get half tin trucks pulling car trailers for no health or dot num. Most think I don't need but a standard car trailer has 2 3500 pound axles making them 7k before truck rating pushing vehicle easily over the 10k. Even the cheap car trailers generally have 2500 pound axles and hook that to a truck with 6k rating easy tickets for dot
Brad I'm so glad you are covering this information..Most of us here on the channel are unaware of what is required. We are just trying to make a little extra grocery money on the side, but also want to abide by the rules and regulations. Thanks so much for your service and be safe.. Hopefully my buddies on the USMS Fugitive Task Force won't rat me out.
It's tough for the little guys like us. Its a deep hole if you dip your toe in. Kind of unfair for the small guys to try and comply with the same rules that the big companies do.
So under the "general appearance " ruling can I be denied for simply being ugly and having a slight limp?? I have never had to deal with the DOT stuff but I assumed that certain medications would be a no-go?? I don't take any but so many I have had to take over the years always have warning about sleepiness and driving. Would any of those types of medications keep someone from getting a medical card?? Interesting series and thanks for doing it!👍
Pain in the butt, I have to do a biennial for my pilots license. I am not going to do one to drive a truck. Can you define what a farm is and how I can get a farm exemption.
Your AG product to the sale site is absolutely covered under the farmers exemption. Now in my case the AG exemption for hire( outside the ownership) is practically useless now because it only covers product that hasn't been processed. After the first process I don't get an AG exemption. According to our safety guys at my company that means potatoes from the field would but if they are washed and sorted on the farm they aren't and for our needs it's just not worth the fight to use an exemption that runs my 70 either way. Now the real fight for people would be the document of hours because well if we logged the whole process like we have to as CDL drivers my hobby looks like a crayon painting from a 2year old. Basically the exemptions are set up for an all or nothing method of business not a hobby.
Here's a question for you... As a professional driver it is virtually to have any side hustle because of HOS. Hobbies are ok... Hunting, fishing ECT... Now how does the hobby farm legal work into that. Everyday chores... End game of making enough to pay off the feed and filling your own freezer. My understanding is .. there's a whole lot of people who don't realize/care what they need to log.
This is why I stayed with a Ram 2500. It’s GVW IS 10,000. Plus it gets me out of the PA diesel idle laws so my labs can have air conditioning when I am out of the vehicle. 😅😅😅
