In December 2015, investigative journalist, Sabelo Skiti, stumbled upon a story about a well-known lawyer in the Eastern Cape claiming to be fighting the good fight for children born with disabilities in the province’s poorer communities. He was helping them take the Department of Health to court for medical negligence with the multi-million-rand pay-outs offering a chance of a better life. Trouble was the lawyer was stealing the money meant for the mostly semi-literate mothers of children living with cerebral palsy. Greedy and unrepentant, he exploited their desperation without ever intending for them to see a cent of their pay-outs. Skiti’s story prompted the Special Investigating Unit to take a closer look and yet, seven years later, the rogue lawyer continues to slither from their clutches. Carte Blanche investigates.

Heartbreaking. Can you imagine how hard it must be for a woman trying to raise a special-needs child in an impoverished rural area? God bless these loving, dedicated Moms. I pray they will receive the justice they deserve.
This is heartbreaking. I really hope there are some honest lawyers out there whom are willing to help these poor mothers and children get justice and recoup their money from this monster
Surely the health department can't be so stupid to pay the same lawyer all this money and not follow up. They must have a hand in it.

My heart 😭😭😭😭. I saw the bed sores and happy rash and sores on that boy because he is not getting regular happy changes because his Mom has to work and there is no one closely looking after him. Thanks for bringing this horrific story to light, as you do so many stories out there that are absolutely deplorable, it makes me want to be a vigilante. Why does nothing happen to these people, who so high up is protecting them? If you can uncover so much hard evidence in such a short space of time, why do the Hawks take 5 years??? It is so unbelievably DUMB of the STATE to invest money in payouts rather than PREVENTION by employing more health care workers. This would enable better CARE for the mothers and Babies. How can they not see this as a way forward? These millions would give care workers and medical staff the possibility to be in a position to help these moms.

I suspect that the suspect also had corrupt officials representing the state that concluded deals with him that ended in gross oversettlements and probably huge illegal kickbacks as well.

Bless you for catching this guy!! I can't believe it. My heart bleeds for those moms. I'm literally in tears. My baby sister was disabled and we struggled as privileged South Africans. I can't imagine their hardship here. My love and prayers go out to them.

As someone who has a CP child in the family, this is utterly utterly digusting on so many levels. These children need all the help they can get, especially if you coming from a disadvantaged background. This Nonxuba is not the only attorney involved in scamming the poorest of the poor its absolutely absured that he continues to practice as a lawyer now in Sandton....our criminal justice system is forever failing those it is supposed to protect the poor and those with deep pockets continue to manipulate our justice system to their own advantage at all costs...its really sad and painful!

I am absolutely heart broken by this... I am in the medical world working with children like this daily. It is so difficult for families in general let alone a single mom doing this on her own ! Justice needs to be served and she needs to get the finances she deserves to help both her and her child. How can we help... Can we do anything to help her situation now ?
