      Did you aplly full force on Adam Mizner? How was your experience, when Adam Mizner tried to execute his Taichi-technique? What is your conclusion? Does his Taichi work? As far as I can see, sometimes his technique seems to work, and somtimes not. Once I trained in a course with a well known european Taichi-Master. He wanted to explain a technique to me, but I used full hard force on him and he was not able to execute his technique. On another occasion with another Master I did the same, but this time his technique worked excellently. So its hard to tell just from watching a video, if a master is truly a master, although I must say, that Adam Mizner seems to have no real fighting experience.

    As a horse trainer/healer and riding instructor, I don’t know how I wandered over to this vid, but YES. People ask me how I can “adjust” a horse, how am I so effective with so little effort; I always say it’s not about size or strength, it’s about synchrony, vectors and speed. I don’t “adjust” the horse. I position the horse so it can adjust itself. When I train horses or humans, I am looking at how the bones interact with gravity. At 170lbs, I can stop a 1500lb horse at the end of my rope by simply setting my hips. No one taught me this (except the horses). It evolved from my daily practice. Now come to discover there is a “martial” art funded in these principles.
    For those watching with a jaundiced eye, thinking, “This has to be staged”-NOPE. It’s physics, awareness, and practice. Practice. Practice.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. I found your comment very interesting to read in regards controlling a horse using body mechanics.

    • @lisar9425
      @lisar9425 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Well, as with tai ch it begins with body mechanics; control of the horse comes from control of the self. But this actually happens, riding, only when you accept the forces of the horses’ movement. In the beginning this feels messy, uncontrolled, off-balance. If you resist it, you will be thrown, dragged, dumped. And this is part of learning. You have to fall to learn. When it finally clicks together, form is the furthest thing from your mind; intention and adjustment become one and the same. You can break it down into the physics, why it works, and this can augment learning. But what the body learns can’t be written down-it must be felt.
      Thanks for your vids.

      It's not an opponent.
      but your complement.
      'Yam-yong'.
      Being chinese,
      such a worldview is practically instinctive
      to me. It's not a concept that I have to consciously learn or have broken down and explained to me.
      The modern western mind finds it hard to grasp this.
      Just look at the sceptical remarks in this comment section. smh.
      Notice, I said 'modern'..
      Gained the world,
      lost yourselves.

    I am a senior instructor of Hong style kung fu, external martial arts. Master Helios Chen was our grand master before he died and he had internal power like this. He must have been deeper into the world of both sides of the coin than our subsidiary school knew about. This man Adam mizner is amazing. I'd love to devote myself to the internal arts if I ever find a teacher like him.

    Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu - chapter 41
    The wise student hears of the Tao and practises it diligently.
    The average student hears of the Tao and gives it thought now and again.
    The foolish student hears of the Tao and laughs aloud.
    If there were no laughter, the Tao would not be what it is.
    Hence it is said:
    The bright path seems dim;
    Going forward seems like retreat;
    The easy way seems hard;
    The highest Virtue seems empty;
    Great purity seems sullied;
    A wealth of Virtue seems inadequate;
    The strength of Virtue seems frail;
    Real Virtue seems unreal;
    The perfect square has no corners;
    Great talents ripen late;
    The highest notes are hard to hear;
    The greatest form has no shape.
    The Tao is hidden and without name.
    The Tao alone nourishes and brings everything to fulfillment.

      Beauty is a subjective feeling/concept. I don't really think those words are beautiful. They are simply very meaningful and philosophical to me. Maybe the beauty is simply a side effect of their deep significance and profoundness. If you notice Mizner's bulging belly and puffy face, then I'd say his physique says "Weight training by way of gaining fat" to me. Having more fat on you doesn't really give you an advantage at moving people around. He looks more like a couch potato to me than somebody who does "Weight training" .

    MARTIAL MAN Very nice work visiting the masters of the most divers Martial Arts to give us an insight into how every school of art does deal with the basic questions of fighting and stay healthy at the same time. But there are limits, as you hit one showing an alleged master of the art like this guy Mizner, who is showing different techniques of "how to do it", performing with an incredibly stiff hollow back and an impressive swollen belly.
    Of course what he shows "works" with you, simply because you're not seriously trying to hit him or get him down. By a real fight, this "master" wouldn't be able to stand on his feet any longer, beyond the first real attempt of an attack.

    What was it like being on the receiving end of such a display? Does experiencing it first-hand change your understanding of the martial arts and what’s possible?

      Louis I may have been unclear - Mizner could effortlessly move/push the host around when Mizner was in awkward positions...

    • @Rehodigan
      @Rehodigan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yes, if he can generate force effortlessly then the position isn't truly awkward (for him) - it just appears awkward (to you). if you just think "he's in a structurally unsound position but still powerful" then his skill just becomes something magic that you can never hope to understand or benefit from. but if you consider it from the opposite angle (he's effortlessly powerful therefore he must still be in a structurally sound position) then a point being made by Mr Mizner is more evident: internal condition of body is more important than external appearance.
      in rewatching the video i do notice that "structure" is used to purely refer to external structure so that's probably where the misunderstanding comes from

    • @vandamme6379

      My problem is with all the "Allowing" movements. None of this is practical against someone punching you directly in the face and kicking your legs with their shins. If they know wrestling or Jujitsu too then you're finished. Practical martial arts are the ones that train you using opponents who are resisting you. This just seems pointless.

    Aside from the many years required to become effective at self defense in Taiji Quan, another difficulty is that it is hard for an observer to understand what is happening, so it often looks like your opponent is pretending to be thrown or struck because it does not resemble the expected physics of everyday life.

    well explained. thank you for your work, I will be sharing this with some of my own students. the only thing i hope would be covered later on for future students is the importance of yielding. evading and defending is fine to neutralize an untrained artist, but on the even levels, yielding to an attack to neutralize it will be more important if the opponent can have "conversation" as well as you can.

    • @jollybigfist

      The most good internal masters learned external styles before including Adam! Also the internal/external dividing is quite new. Most good "external" Kung Fu has also internals. From a good Kung Fu master you can learn more than from a bad Taji teacher.

    this is excellent! big fan of Adam Minzer.
    Do want to say though, his definition of other kung fu seemed to be geared toward WC which has much of the same principles of Tai Chi, through hip and shifting movements, absorbing and redirecting energy. The longer you practice it, it seems the more Chi you build and the more our body becomes loose and like a spring. Being stiff is the beginning of learning the movements and structure.
