I bought several one $1 LED 2 AA 6 years ago; made in China; they are still working; I use them every night; the 2 AA batteries last over 2 years.
Outside at night; in the country; they light up stop signs a quarter mile away! Where could you find such a deal; if they were made in the west; they would cost $59.95.

Hey Shango, here in the UK I used to often look on the public dump to find all manner of stuff. I would tip the guys - Or ask them how much, and most often they would say, 'Take it'.
In recent years things have changed. Not only does it cost a lot to chuck something out but the scrapyard is now out of bounds. No offer of a couple of notes accepted...Ever! Not only that but they have security looking after the dumped rubbish and they watch it like it was Fort Knox! They tell you to f-off if you go near it.
Is it like that in the US or is it like The Post Apocalyptic Inventors scrapyards?...That is how they were here in the UK up until the end of last century🙀😸. Most have gone, nearly all the car junk yards have gone from London and the normal scrapyards / tips are ones run by the council.

On older pocket radios with the CD marks, where you are, you can essentially make use of them as alignment points, with KFI 640 and K-SURF at 1260 (close enough to 1240) for a direct-tuning 180° dial.

Shango, have you seen the FCC submitted to shut down the AM broadcasting band and end the analog transmissions? They want to move AM to Digital! I mean this SUCKS because it will completely kill Millions of radios here not to mention around the world! Digital OTA TV Sucks in our area really bad and I see that is a fail personally! A freaking leaf will kill the digital tv signals! This idea of digital out in the mountains has been a total cluster Crapper! Even out local law enforcement had to go back to using ANALOG where their cell phones work! Cell coverage in the mountains is like trying to catch BEE FARTS! That Philco board looked like it'd seen the skills of a local "restorer" who also happens to think offering to resurrect something they killed, as a favour, for free, equates to "offering a service" and then when said "service" isn't in keeping with the timeline they liked, gets all twerkosquerculated out of shape and starts crying...
Good job on the patience and steady hand fixing those coils, they're damned fiddly to do at the best of times let alone when there's cops shooting down poor innocent gunmen left right & centre...

I had a portable radio where the batteries leaked juice which flowed into the polyvaricon Japanese tiny tuning capacitor, corroded the plates, and the sharp edges of the corroded plates ripped through the polyester film insulation and shorted the capacitor. If it's not a dead short, then maybe it's corrosion between the moving plates and their wiper contact, and rocking it back and forth might clear the corrosion in some cases.

Why the hell is shipping stuff such a mayor pain in the *ss in the US? Sorry for the bragging, but I live in Germany and here it's just no problem at all. The next Parcel-Servicepoint is at a gas station round the corner. No waiting in line at all. You can post a package Sunday morning at 4o'clockAM if you want to. Shipping a 30Pound Package across Germany costs about $10-15 and 1,500 miles across Europe about double that. I have relatives in Latin America and even in Ecuador or a godforsaken mudhole-village in Bolivia it's easyer to ship a package than in the US.
I don't get that. Concerning the fact, that the US is an extremely service-oriented society in other places.

Here we have automated post offices. Slap it in a box, print a label at the kiosk, drop in the attached mailbox and go about your day. No lines.

Why would someone want such convenience when they can have the experience of standing in a line for an hour or two wearing a Covid mask so that they can meet a surly Post Office employee that acts as if you are an inconvenience in their life?

@@vancouverman4313 No one wants to stand in a queue anywhere - especially in hot weather - behind somebody who may have forgotten to shower that day.

I like to think of a challenging junk radio project like this as a wartime radio. It matters not what it looks like, as long as you can tune into an "allied" (good guys) station updating you on progress (or not), at least it's something.

To be fair, it's really hard to follow behind a bad repair and find out what the problems are. I would rather start with an untouched broken radio than one that's been mangled.

In the first photo of it, Looks like the Philco was modded with the addition of a pot. OK You did that. I like the vernier action on the tuning cap.
The Chinese copied the Japanese parts and reduced the cost (along with the quality).

My brother fixes TVs and every now and then he gets an old tv that would be worthless to anyone else. But the customer is willing to pay big money. Sometimes these old TVs have personal sentimental value.

Also since this is popular, You should bury a radio in the mud, magically find it, drag it back home then restore it in silence without actually pulling a SAMS or doing any alignments...
