The way her face lit and propped herself up when he took the stand. Also, yet another time she conveniently didn’t need to doodle because now she can see the man she is obsessed with talk about her. She loves hearing people talk about poor little Ezra. She couldn’t help but smile and get giddy when she saw what she thinks is her knight in shining armor. 1 - he's a part timer, which doesn't really require any intellect or decorum 2- the army is known for taking anyone. 3- he's a hipster that likes to hear his own voice and thinks he's being witty. Just like Ezra
Her smirk is disturbing. It is also strange that the commenters want him to condemn her on the stand. That is not his job, it is the job of the prosecutors.
He was too gullible when it came to believing her... she wasn't faithful and she was trying to hide that fact to keep Jason on the side when she was ready to come back. Disgusting..
1:30:39 I love how her attorney said it's speculation about how McCandless felt (the judge overruled but still ironic on the defense)... but it's OK for McCandless to interpret Alex's entire journal of essays?
I was thinking the exact same thing… And in the same vein, when the prosecutor was saying to Ezra, “what did Jason tell you, that he was told, by Jenna” I mean, anywhere else, is that not hearsay? It seems like there are different rules, or different allowances, depending on who you are. And I’ve also never really seen it in a trial where a witness or defendant is absolutely NOT allowed or supposed to expand on what they’re saying, when giving an answer. Life is not a yes or no answer. Anyway, I appreciate your comment!
The way Jason describes the coffee house, you'd think it's 1924 and he's a member of the Algonquin Roundtable describing its members, the restaurant and its patrons, and not the ex of a sadistic murderer and a witness in a murder trial.
There’s a lot of unnecessary cruel comments about Jason Mengal on here. I think he was possibly a ‘late developer’/not confident with females and certainly appears nervous on the stand. I’m sure Ezra took advantage of his comparatively naive character.
I can only comment to your post as I have others: the areas he is referencing are VERY Catholic. Pro-choice billboards all along the routes to get there. Ultra conservative. Church is THE thing there. The people are very "God, Country, Family." Extremely hard-working people who are humble, kind and friendly, but they are sheltered (and they are proud of that) as most rural areas are. These days that's not necessarily a bad thing. So if he grew up there, that might be a reason why he seems under developed for his age.
@@dawnb3194 I thought, he was sweet as well. Took her in. Gave her a place. Gave her love and attention. Probably also money. All perfect, the first few months, and then you begin to see signs. Or fall out of love. And hard to kick a girl out of your house. If she has nowhere to go. First obstacle, she was pregnant immediatedly. Wanted immediatedly an abortion. Was it his? Or previous relationships? It went wrong the relationship. They stayed friends. It went wrong, especially learning or knowing rumors about a John and an Alex. Jason withdrew, too much for him, and Ezra lost him, but also wanted to keep him, because he was the only one, she trusted. Could count on.... It is a Netflix movie or like those old little books with love stories, read in 2 hours. I just wonder, why didn't she kill John? Or Jason, with: if I can't have you, nobody will....
@@thenightporter The trial is very interesting. I'm now listening to the defense cross by Rottweilerinvestigations. Defense lady is now hammering, that sweet Jason guy. Like Ezra was his responsibility. She being 20 and Jason being 33. It is what is happening in real life also. Without somebody being killed. Don't mess with an unstable girl. I think, Jason did the best he could. In friendship. But maybe, maybe, it should have stayed, just by friendship. For a lot of girls, it is so big, a relationship for a few months. The world. And when it falls apart, such a deep low. Especially when your safe haven is gone, your roof, your love, your rock, etc. And you have to start over again, without all the attention Jason gave her. Ezra has Bordeline/bipolair/histrionic/whatever issues, like Amber Heard.
As an attorney, trials are SO exhausting. You have to be “on” all day every day for hours. Tense and on alert because you cannot let your attention stray and miss something important. You’re also barely sleeping because you have to prep each night. It’s like doing 8 hours of job interviews every day for weeks straight. It makes me happy to see other attorneys sit sometimes lol
She also made sure that she wore the green sweater he bought her. She wanted him to see it, to remember. He thought it was really odd that she did that. She even took her trial pink jacket off to make sure. What a piece of work. 🙄
Im a chronic overexplaining communicator as well. Most things aren't simple yes/no's for me either. I think I would absolutely have a hard time on a witness stand and come off a lot like he does.
Initial instinct … he’s a strange dude too. “Roger” in a courtroom. Doesn’t know his age. Can’t say where he’s from with clarity. “Unified procrastination”. No wonder he dated her. All bunch of kooks.
I agree Despite of the age difference between them, she was sleeping around with his closest friends and he even had to read messages she sent into the record
I think she s a nasty women she never called on any man raped her and still texting them not until he found out she call rape it ridiculous she had sex with all he’s friends she nasty then calls it raped and her bf called the cops for her something she should of done so it tell she lied about everything
This is so sad. He loved her, and she ripped his heart out, and now he is stuck in the middle of a murder trial. I can not imagine what a nightmare his life was when Ezra was in it. She is awful.
I feel so bad for Alex who lost his life. she used him and lied to him. It seems he was a pawn in her manipulative games she played. I'm sure the people have been traumatized and my heart goes out to them. They're still are on this earth and Alex is not. Absolute tragedy.
The abortion, the death of his friend...jason is traumatized. No one ever wants to say men go through trauma bc its all about choice. Hes still deeply, deeply effected by the loss.
Not sure what everyone’s problems are with him. I think he is adorable and his unwavering trust is endearing. I’m sure he wanted to see the best in her. She definitely didn’t deserve him. I’m hoping he can find someone decent.
I believe he'll eventually find someone who really appreciates him, who will be honest and faithful to him and deserving of his love. I hope he's taking time for himself right now tho.
The girl was 19 and he was 33…she cheated on him multiple times and he kept going back. She MURDERS one of the dudes and he’s still all kind toward her. Why? Because she’s pretty? This dude is not one I would trust as a partner of mine. He’s cute, but he’s way off in the head.
All the conversations these people had were exhausting to me. My dad was air force for 23 years & never spoke like that. He said yes, no etc. Exhausting people

There are some really judgmental, harsh, ugly posts about this Mengel guy; get off of him. He is just nerdy, which is the least of many crimes, and seems like a truly compassionate, moral person. She truly screwed him over.
@@coopyduck6901 It's called being nervous, it's petty common for people to forget things when in a nervous setting. I've forgotten my age multiple times, some people don't give a damn about their work service length or their age. I haven't had a birthday party or anything in years and don't think about how long I've been at my occupation so yeah sometimes it's easy to forget.
27:26 Make this make sense for me. It was his choice that she continue living with him, essentially rent free, while he sleeps on the couch??… side note - this is the most confusing line of questioning I’ve heard in a very long time.
the green sweater she chose to wear (under the blazer) belongs to Jason. This woman is a psychopath. CBC news. Jason Mengel: “… on the day I was testifying … I was kinda shocked when I walked in the room … she's givin' me these looks. Adjusting herself. Like, being overly, you know, attuned to me. At one point she removes her blazer and there's this green sweater that I had given her. Like, she's wearing it … it was just shocking … and it's, like, I don't understand what her tactic was, but I definitely felt uneasy.”
She lied about her age. He didn’t find out her real age until they were already in love. She’s also an adult turning 20 having committing the crime at 20 1/2. It’s in the trial. This guy will never be the same again especially intuitively knowing something was wrong when Monica went to Alex’s. He said he saw fire in her eyes at the coffee shop and biked over to Alex’s. He suggested they go talk in a public place that’s when Monica took Alex and killed his ass and Jason rode off on his bike. Imagine you being the motive for murder and knowing something was wrong did the right thing and had a horrific outcome. This poor man.
That girl is mentally f'd up......the way she was smiling and all giddy was just scary.....you are the defendant in a murder trial....wht are you smiling etc. at a witness !!!!
Exactly!!! I thought exactly the same like you. She is really not a normal person. Look, si many lies, she is so strange, and really has obsession about having sex with so many as possible. Girl! Respect yourself a little bit!!! And others as well. Your body is not a waste bin.
I do not know. The way, how naive the guy is, is really incredible. I really do not get it, she cheated on him so many times, and the guy is still sticking to her. Unbeliveable.
The way Ezra was preening in the first few seconds is astonishing -- as if she felt she could still attract Jason ...edit: Jason seems like the nicest guy in the world. All the best to him.

ALL the people involved in this “situation” seem emotionally immature - like they believe their lives are supposed to reflect the “drama” of a daytime soap opera. Just way too much of EVERYTHING. They seem like the type of emotionally immature people a lot of us consciously avoid. The guy testifying seems nice enough, but I’m surprised that, at his age, he let himself get dragged into this mess. It reflects stunted development, IMO. Thank god I have a relatively normal circle of friends.
I was in St Paul and so I drove over to Racy’s. Jason was there and I bought him a cup of coffee. He was not very talkative but he did tell me that he was glad that everything was back to normal at Racy’s.
I had to laugh about your comment. How is the burned down laundromat doing? Did Jason already buy his own washingmachine? I may not laugh. I'm just now listening to Ezra by the police. Detective Mark Vang. Assaulted by that John 2 times, while Jason was away. Assaulted/bad night, but John asked her over at his house, 'to talk about it', and assaulted again. That is just crazy. And hard to believe. If it was such a horrific experience, why going there for the second time? If it had happened, a person will do anything, to avoid that John. So weird this case. But reality, that so many youngsters, cannot cope with life. Result: a guy dead and a girl spending her whole life in prison for it. Sad, how she lost it. And that John guy and Jason guy, are very lucky. Could have been one of them....
You have obviously never been manipulated and lied to in a relationship with someone who you truly love. There is no moral discrepancies on Jason Mengals part, he was a victim of Ezra too. She has a long history of lying and manipulation. Jason cared for her, and she did treat him and everyone else awfully and her behavior is not a reflection of him. It’s gross to criticize him the way you did. He’s trying to be a good person. I recommend you do some more research before criticizing a victim of emotional abuse.
Yeah if someone isn’t asking they don’t want to know do they! im not sure why some are so freaking out age gap in principle, I had my first serious relationship with a guy who was 32 and I was 18, for 2 years, lived together and in our social scene people of various ages interacted, it wasn’t odd. Each case is different, I don’t think a big age gap automatically means something Is though.
If there was any ever doubt that she committed this crime in order to lure Mengal back into her life this was confirmed when he took the stand. The level of adoration on her face was so apparent. Must have been pretty excruciating for him given how their relationship & the murder played out, no wonder he's repressed much of it.
😂 yeah, that made me roll my eyes. Saying the facts outloud makes him look predatory (as in he was an older man with younger barely out of HS girlfriend at the time) so I think he was advised to act this way to make people be on his side as the victim.
Well he is and we cannot judge him like that he could be nervous so he tried to make it comfortable for himself, its terrible situation for anyone to find themselves in.He did nothing wrong.

Have you ever been to the area? I have. It's Racy's, church (which means no sex unless married, so you can't spend your time doing that) or cow-tipping for entertainment.
He doesn't respond directly to any question.....it is frustrating listening to him narrating unnecessary stories before finally responding to the question.......either he likes to to hear his own voice,or like the attention. He should learn from his military life to give short answers, and avoid telling facultative details. He is the kind who will write a book about the coffee shop of his neighbourhood.
You're being a bit harsh, it's not just *this or that* ~ it's not black and white! Some people have a way to communicate like this man does. They don't go straight to the point, but go on a story and then in the end answer what was asked about.. It's a personality trait, difficult to change, a way to communicate..
Lol this is normal of people who are nervous and also certain people in The military that have to document each detail in reports such as a medic as himself lol Y’all are basic people that can’t think deeper than trolling TH-cam.
That questioning part, where the lawyer read the Instagram messages between Ezra and Jason about Alex's little Prince book present, almost made me puck, what a vile woman. That was a sweet present of a moment he thought they cherish together and she was making it seem like it was trash and an unwanted gift. For such a self proclaimed "soft spoken" woman, she does talk a lot of garbage in these messages.

Her smirk is disturbing. It is also strange that the commenters want him to condemn her on the stand. That is not his job, it is the job of the prosecutors.
It’s everyone’s job. She is scum.
What you took from this is disturbing.
He was too gullible when it came to believing her... she wasn't faithful and she was trying to hide that fact to keep Jason on the side when she was ready to come back. Disgusting..
He’s a tool and I mean that in a non disrespectful way
1:30:39 I love how her attorney said it's speculation about how McCandless felt (the judge overruled but still ironic on the defense)... but it's OK for McCandless to interpret Alex's entire journal of essays?
I was thinking the exact same thing…
And in the same vein, when the prosecutor was saying to Ezra, “what did Jason tell you, that he was told, by Jenna”
I mean, anywhere else, is that not hearsay?
It seems like there are different rules, or different allowances, depending on who you are.
And I’ve also never really seen it in a trial where a witness or defendant is absolutely NOT allowed or supposed to expand on what they’re saying, when giving an answer. Life is not a yes or no answer.
Anyway, I appreciate your comment!
🙌👏🙌👏
The way Jason describes the coffee house, you'd think it's 1924 and he's a member of the Algonquin Roundtable describing its members, the restaurant and its patrons, and not the ex of a sadistic murderer and a witness in a murder trial.
Dude its Eau Claire, its better than the Algonquin Roundtable!!
Too funny!
Exactly. I was listening and thinking what the hell kind of coffee shop is this?
The coffee shop is basically a place people come to smell there own farts. Fake duoche bags.
I know like six people who are exactly like he and Ezra. Coffee shop weirdos trying to be so unique they just become a meme
@@thenightporter Very possibly. I think he seemed kind of sweet and I didn’t like reading the nasty comments about him.
I doubt it was his. She probably did not know who the father was either. Low prices attract the most customers.

They don't go straight to the point, but go on a story and then in the end answer what was asked about.. It's a personality trait, difficult to change, a way to communicate..
Roger🤭
What he needed to go in-depth was why was he dating a girl he was doubling age. ?
Lol this is normal of people who are nervous and also certain people in The military that have to document each detail in reports such as a medic as himself lol
Y’all are basic people that can’t think deeper than trolling TH-cam.
I find this man very immature and strange
Thank you.
This is the type of guy women meet on Match/Tinder/Bumble and when their friends ask the next day "How was your date? Are you going out with him again," they will answer, "No, there was something about him that gave me the creeps."
That’s why he was 33 dating a 19 year old. Her mom was his age
He comes off like someone on the autistic spectrum.
Liberal
I don't think she ever was pregnant!!
Yeah I think she hid out after she sent him away
29:42 explain for the jury generally what DND Is…
Jason: sure, actually I brought the game with me so we can play as I explain.
🤦🏻♀️😑🙄 this guy thought he was at a therapy session. I know the state was annoyed he kept letting out breaths in between questions I believe that was his way of dealing with Jason’s long winded answers. 😤
When I heard "Dungeons and Dragons," I just groaned.
Strange, i thought his interacting was way more interesting than other court cases
Different types attracted to different Styles 😁😉
Jason seems like a rare kind of genuinely good person. Doesn't hurt that he is very handsome, no wonder that psychopath chose him as her victim.
it's a shame he isn't too smart. I'd never date a man who simps like he did. I see them get manipulated and it makes them instantly unattractive. Dumb people get people killed, especially when they cant see they are being manipulated by a psycho they refuse to get rid of.
Yes, and Ezra is very attractive as well. It's sad, really.
Good men don’t date teenagers

He’s doing well considering what he’s been thru
Bless his heart. He's nervous. He can't remember notin lol. He's dementia is worse than mine. I just found out I'm 62 the other day 😂😂 I can laugh about it so far. ❤😂
@@CharlieBravo887 He's in his 30's not in his 70's. And if you can't remember your age and where you were born, well....that's an issue, especially in a courtroom.
The lawyer looks like he’s 12 😳
Lol.. I couldn't believe he's the lawyer
Maybe he is. He might be the Doogie Howser of lawyers.😁
