Yeah Open E Major, it's the same tuning that Pete Seeger used so he could sing in a Lower Key.

The tuning on the higher frets is just a little off up the neck...just wondering if that's inherent on this model...noticed Alison Brown's banjo was a little out of tune on her recording with Molly Tuttle, and the rest.. Easily fixed. ........great production and will be a fav among the pros and collectors! I own a Stelling Staghorn (1983), and have the Julia Belle on order.

Definitely not inherent on this model. It was a one take shoot and just missed a hair during the performance a bit.

I agree. I have that model, and it gets a little sharper up in the higher frets.......so my opinion....this banjo was designed to play in the "lower note" range......the sound is amazing..........I'm picky about the tuning up the neck......but, what an amazing sound! Being knowledgeable of how those things work on any fretted instruments....yes........easily to compensate if "up the neck" playing is the focus...the higher fret sound is nice......but more poignant if the tuning is not adjusted for this. Takes a little time to adjust, but yet, simple.........also, finger pressure affects the tuning quite a bit up there!

it's tough to play in tune with heavier strings fretted way up high. I play in tunings F, E, D, and C. It's worth it since you have some bass note possibilities. I play melodies up high and drone low notes on open strings. Or I play chordal arrangements where I get a nice fat bass note.

was genuinely concerned you were never gonna play the thing. sitting here wondering if it was supposed to look different, or _sound_ different...
