Don, the Drunk Gentleman passed away a hour or 2 after he was in Custody, apparently more than alcohol was involved plus he was given a drug to calm him down so there is a lot more to this story. Prayers to the family. I do believe there is a way they can give these crew members a day off here and there, but probably right it will cost the cruisers more.
I am sure Don will tell the entire story, you have to remember he himself is on a cruise right now and possibly getting his updated information later than if he is at home.
@@richardm3023actually they are not sure at this point, he was given some type of sedative while in custody. This may be a big problem for the cruise line.

I like your idea Don about the one day off for crew members and like you said if there's a will there's a way. They're human also and for them to be able to keep a smile on their face day in and day out sometimes with the most unruly passengers, says a lot
Yes, “IF” there’s a will, there’s a way; cruise lines just has to be willing! I’ll give up having my cabin cleaned every other day for the crew to be allowed to get a day off!
I think people need to wait for an autopsy before assuming this man was intoxicated or on drugs. There could have been a medical issue that was causing his delirium. His wife said this was out of character for him.
I stand with your sentiment Don. These cruise companies are becoming more and more greedy and if not for those workers that work tirelessly to make our vacations memorable they wouldn’t be able to stay afloat. They are human beings and should have time off.
If you think these companies are greedy then don't do business with them. If you do business with them then you are a part of what you call company greed!

Don, go back and look at the picture of the man 'rescued' at sea. That's not an overturned catamaran, looks like he's been living out there for a long while. He's built some sort of floating monstrosity, and doesn't look all that happy that he was discovered.
In talking to crew members universally I hear that (post covid) the cruise line has cut the numer of state roon attendents and greatly increased the number of rooms per attendent to clean each day. One day off per month would be to have a down day between cruises where they don't have any passengers on the ship. Then most people on the ship could take a day off at the same time.
It’s been reported that this man has died shortly after he was detained. His family says that his behavior was uncharacteristic and he was a very nice man.
That's quite sad if the gentleman has died, he may not of been drunk he may have had something like a brain tumour and may have only had a few drinks which sent his blood pressure skyhigh, affecting his personality.
There's no question that it can be done to give crew members a day off; the real question is are the cruise lines willing to cut into their bottom line to do it?

I agree, if they really wanted to give the crew a day off, they could figure out a way, but if they had to hire a replacement, the cost would be passed on to the passengers.
Out of curiosity, I looked up some facts and figures from the hospitality industry in Canada. According to our labour laws, the industry's employees MUST receive 24 consecutive hours off for each week worked and if the work week is 2 weeks long, 48 consecutive hours must be given. I'm going to assume that we're talking about 5-day work weeks. Considering that a cruise is similar to a floating hotel, there is no question that with proper scheduling, and probably a considerable increase in staff to allow for several shifts, the same time off should apply. Considering that this would certainly impact the profit margin for the cruise line, because they also have to provide a leisure venue for the staff, or at least time off on days of shore excursions, what do you think the probability of time off is for these poor folk? Yes, it should happen, but the line will definitely pass the increased cost to the cruiser, so: the bottom line here is: how much do you want to pay for your cruise? What have I missed?
If you are willing to pay for a cruise, you should be willing to pay a little more to give these hardworking crew members one day off a month. It’s only humane! It’s like i figure that if you eat in a restaurant, you need to tip the staff well. If you can’t afford to add an $8 tip to a $40 restaurant bill, you should not be eating in the restaurant. I have learned, through various means, that my tipping at least 20% is rare and so very much appreciated.
Aren't you judgmental. I agree that it's madness to expect people to work 14 hours/day, for 10 months. A tip is a gift, and some people prefer not to tip for substandard service.
