    We just traded an ML320 Blutec for one (as a family hauler). The ML was a great vehicle, made it to 140K miles, felt solid and high quality at the end, could tow a 7000LB race trailer, and got 30-34MPG on highway. So the GLS was the next most likely option. As Jack said, comfort and luxury are important, but also Safety is a big item. And, we wanted something that would not feel like garbage at 80K miles. So far, the GLS has been great as a family hauler. As noted, it just feels like a safe, steady and comfortable drive. We cross-shopped the X7 as well, but it seemed like it had a smidge less cargo space, and my wife did not care about handling fun. Great review, and thanks again for being the only reviewer who puts Audio data in their test!

    • @johnm5131
      @johnm5131 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@austinfrazier7325 there was more to my story! We brought the Blutec in for its service and intended on keeping it as a spare. The tech came out and said there were significant oil leaks in 2 areas, as well as a transmission issue (probably from the heavy towing). The repair was looking like $4500-6000. Instead, they offered us $9K for the car. But deep in the back of our minds, we knew this was the last mercedes w/ their commercial diesel engine. I was sad to see it go. (and the 700mile range!)

      @@johnm5131 I understand. I had an X5 diesel that sometimes I wish I had. Hard to drop that kind of money on a car that isn’t worth that much more. Then it’s like what is gonna break next. What a deal at $100,000! I'm gonna get one so all my neighbors will be jealous. I'm sure it's 100 times better and worth paying $60,000 extra over a $40k SUV. It's got 4 vents in a row on center dash, I have never seen that before!

    • @peterking3131
      @peterking3131 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 vents are very well implemented and much nicer than in many other luxury cars. It is an aspiring SUV, large, comfortable, safe and advanced in many respect. It comes at price, but it is not unjustified.

    Ehhh we're still rocking a 2009 GL550 with 255,000 kms on it. Been through one set of air struts (Arnott's replacements were easy to install), front lower control arms, stabilizer bars, motor/trans mounts and then just the usual maintenance stuff (oil, filter, air filter, cabin filter and a set of brake pads/rotors). These vehicles new aren't worth it but used worth it and are a great driving experience. This review was hilarious by the way.

Upgrade to a set of 20s and you'll get less tire wear and more tire choices. Weirdly enough there are more tire choices for 22 inch rims than there are for 21s. Coming from a C-Class I went to my local Benz dealer looking to trade into an suv, they wanted 50k over sticker for these or 10K over sticker for a glc. When I said I was a vet they said okay we'll do you a favor and only charge you 5K over sticker for the GLC. I went next door to BMW and they sold me an X5 45e at sticker plus a 2K discount for being a veteran. Done with Mercedes for life.

      @wiseguy724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fajitas4every1 yes, you do realize that dealers are representatives of the brand? The choices dealers make directly influence brand perception. When the owner says things like they didn't charge premiums but then he realized he was leaving money on the table, so he decided to start charging premiums really says something. That money left on the table was really my family's dinner table. none of the other luxury brands in my city were doing that, it reflects poorly.

    I know this is like beating a dead horse, But I think now more than ever, people want cars that are cheaper than they used to be, and not more expensive.
    Where have all of the promises gone? economies of scale, covid is over, etc etc etc? Shouldn't cars be getting cheaper to make? Some of the engines these companies uses are a decade old if not more! Why is a civic costing me as much as I paid for a fully loaded 2019 camry? These are the issues people care about, and this has nothing to do with SG or the channel, as the content is still fantastic and I love to watch it, but I think its time to raise some torches and pitchforks against these corporations that have started to take a "technocratic" near "apple/google like" stance on something that depreciates worse than anything else on the planet. And you can't tell me shortages exist, because they do not, has anyone seen the repo market? This is a SCAM by banks and car makers and dealerships.

    • @future62
      @future62 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      COVID is far from over. And in real inflation adjusted terms cars are a lot cheaper. A 2022 Civic costs about as much as a 1992 Accord in real terms, but is a much better car in pretty much every way. Automakers have done their part on the affordability front; most of the issues around affordability are economic.

    • @colin-nekritz
      @colin-nekritz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's honestly worse than that, these cars as many aren't just outpacing inflation and most people's means - not that people won't take out a 96-month loan at 14.98% at $1,299 a month for these things - but the fact they're making cars like these more disposable than ever.
      Those electronics are going to be a $1-4K expense when they go on the fritz and will look woefully dated in four years, in some cars less. Just the general cost of all the repairs compared to say a 1997 Camry or even a 2011 Malibu which, not if, but when they happen, as so much is connected to electronic nannies, is going to make these cars, even accounting for inflation, beyond the pale in terms of cost to own and operate.
      Car makes will continue to push the false narrative that their buyers are demanding all this gadgetry, but, the truth, the reality, from surveys and polls independent of the automakers has shown every time that's not the case. Given a choice to pay for gee whiz tech at even a modest $2-3K markup vs standard gauges, it's telling that most people honestly don't give much of AF outside of "does this have Android/Apple car play?" As in, yes, smartphones, also a very disposable but far, far, FAR less expensive to own and replace pieces because many consumers ARE aware that it'll be cheaper and easier to replace a smartphone than a giant screen in their car.
      The car industry and the consumer are heading for a day of reckoning discussed on other car channels and you don't need to be an economist to grasp the current new car market and the economy is not sustainable.

The X7 3rd row was very small and cramped the the GLS and the trunk space was larger in the GLS. X7 felt like my GLE43 in interior space with the exception of a 3rd row. As always I love your reviews guys - so funny! As an owner of a 2021 Q7 I am amazed at how the Germans do big crossovers. On the plus side, our Q7 rides better than any car with 21 inch wheels and low profile tires deserves to; it looks terrific with the black optics package and brown color. On the negative side, interior storage space is a total joke and the third row is not meant for regular people. Also, consumables for these European vehicles are much bigger than expected. I was shocked by how expensive snow tires were for our Q7, so buyer beware.

Better fuel economy and superior equipment and safety [the Audi was pre-2015] and as much room. I miss the air suspension sometimes, but not often.
