You nailed it with the Tolkien reference (my favourite LOTR scene BTW). Suho himself said the song was inspired by the novel Momo by Michael Ende in which grey suited men steal time from others. He said that this was how he felt during his military service. Suho served two years as a public service worker rather than active duty so he basically did a nine to five office job. He described how he seemed to be stuck in this grey time while the rest of the world was still living on in color. He he is definitely a storyteller and does write his own lyrics (most EXO songs including solos, are written for them although they often participate). He is also very inspired by British prog rock groups and he handpicked his backing band for this album and toured the festival circuit with them last summer. I already loved Suho as our hardworking leader and forever target of EXO's ribbing but when he dropped this album a mere seven weeks after being discharged, including filming two music videos and shooting a reality show with EXO in that time, I discovered what an impressive and sensitive artist he is too. My most listened album last year.

I've said before I love them all but always feel have to get people not to forget SUHO (or Xiumin) but now we have you and you always say it better so I'll just be your wingman!!! Now confession time, I have his second cd (cant understand all of this downloading stuff, like I said I am ancient) but I haven't taken it out of its packaging! Why you may asked....... I am not ready to let go of his first cd Self-Portrait. I still can't understand why as I have always preferred happier pieces but Self-Portrait calms my soul. Actually my cd player takes 3 cd's at a time and I have Self-Portrait, and Jonghyun's Base and Story Op.1. Think i am stuck in a time loop
@@sandman3384 I hear you! I spent a lot of years listening to the same music from a specific time in my life because it was a happy time when I really liked myself. For me it eventually became a rut I finally got sick of and it wasn’t until kpop that I got excited about music and learning about a new country and started feeling inspired again. But if your three cd loop is your happy place/source of calm and comfort then why change it? You’ll switch out the cd’s one day when you feel inspired to. Music is about how you feel, there’s no rules about how many times you should listen! 🥰 And yep I am Baekhyun biased but I love all the members so much. I definitely try and talk up Suho, Xiumin and Sehun because Baekhyun gets enough attention. But I could go on about any of them and Shinee members for days. They all are so special in their own unique ways.

For solo..they have their own genre,each one is different..and I like all of them..they are really great.. Many don't know that Suho also has great songs, and his voice is beautiful..

As Suho explained it, at the time he's in military he felt like the world was just black & white (grey) but when he's discharged it's was colorful again, no more grey. Suho's voice may be soft & sweet but powerful. Some comments I've read he's underrated & that if he's not w/ EXO he would be in main vocal line. (But no, I love him w/ EXO.) Loved it. This album hits me so much, i am in dreamland with his soft vocals, and somehow unexpected sounds from Suho... Decanting, Morning Star, Bear Hug, i love these songs from this album, they follow the same chill vibe, but my heart just soars somewhere else, i love it. 💙🌺

I have no evidence for this, I can’t give you any examples, but this has a hint of 70s pop/rock to me. Cool kids FM radio programming type of stuff. I don’t know what it is, there’s just a little something in the back of my ear. Suho has such a pleasing tone. He’s also near to being the most stable in the group. I don’t think he gets enough credit for that. I have mad respect for him off the stage as well. From early on EXO had some really tough times and as leader he has had to deal with it all on top of the pressure of simply being an idol.
I think if you were to show someone or even me when I started I would've never guess that he would've been Leader I would've guessed Baekhyun or Chen would be in all honesty. Kinda interesting to have such a chill leader. Seems so different from someone like CL
