    Comment by Wildlife_Tracker:
    The species of Wasp in this video is Vespula squamosa. Those large Orange coloured Wasps are Queens, and the smaller Wasps that have longer abdomens are Males. The best way to deal with a nest like this is use a small vacuum to suck up the workers. Much safer and more effective than using pesticides and harmful chemicals :)
    Thanks Wildlife_Tracker. If I ever do one of these again I won't use any poison. I think I breathed about a can worth of fogger.

    I am the former President of the Arizona Pest Control Association. Put a couple of drops of dawn detergent into some basic window cleaner and spray the heck out of the nest (papernest) and run. Wait a few minutes and knock the nest down with a shovel and squash it. It is important to destroy as many wasps as you can since they predate on our precious honeybees. For honeybee problems just call a local beekeeper. Don't kill them.

      Yes! Don’t kill honeybees. They only sting to warn, not like killer bees or wasps. They are very good pollinators and essential for our food. Local beekeepers will take care of them

    • @Excalion88
      @Excalion88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's not true at all that you should destroy as many wasps as possible, as they do serve a purpose. They are critically important as natural bio-control agents...and it's kind of funny that someone who hates pests and wants them annihilated would want to kill a bug that naturally takes care of pests.
      Maybe you really like pests around so you have a reason to keep your Pest Society or whatever open, and therefore want wasps dead. It's part of your grand scheme to keep pests flourishing. lol.

    • @Glassandcandy
      @Glassandcandy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, also the drones are generally male and the workers female. The size and sex of the wasp is determined by the size of their cell during pupation. Worker cells are smaller and abundant and drone and queen cells are much larger but less abundant in numbers.

    I'm a pest controller and deal with over 150 nests a year. In the uk we treat wasps differently. Its a simple case of pumping a small amount of insecticide dust (we use a chemical called bendiocarb which is extremely effective) in through the hole they are flying in and out of from the outside. The dust is really fine and penetrates a surprisingly long way. Most wasps will be dead within 5 mins and the rest will pick it up as they return to the nest. There's no need to remove the nest as wasps never use a nest twice unlike bees that will move into old bees nests. We certainly wouldn't need to put holes in walls. By not removing the nest you make it much harder for more wasps to move in next year.

    • @adadadawd309
      @adadadawd309 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tom Caswell Gotta be careful with that. There is dust like that available in the US as well, call Sevin. However, it's NOT rated for use in structures. You really don't want people in the house breathing that stuff for months to come.

    • @mrtcat1000
      @mrtcat1000 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Udo Licht yep I understand that bendiocarb products were voluntarily removed from the US market by their manufacturers as EPA required more extensive testing than was financially viable. I totally agree that nobody should be exposed to toxic materials for extended periods. In the UK we use special applicators to ensure the dust only enters the nest and it is applied from outside so it doesn't enter the house. I think the op of this video stated that he inhaled a lot if the smoke which is not ideal and his risk of stings was pretty high.
      Bendiocarb is recognised as non carcinogenic unlike the active ingredient in Sevin which is a known carcinogen. All carbamates (Sevin included) are reversible cholinesterase inhibitors which means that their effect is not permanent and therefore they don't accumulate in your body over time until you reach a point where the level is so high you die. This is a problem with the organophosphate insecticides and that's why we use a carbamates dust. in the UK bendiocarb is approved for use in schools and hospitals also.

    • @nahalastone8027
      @nahalastone8027 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Caswell Yup. I do pest control as well and there are dust products labeled for structures/homes. Tempo is one of them. Dusting is the best way to get rid of them when they're holed up tight like this. The ones here really like retaining walls. Thank God they don't make enormous nests like the ones down in southern US....

      628DirtRooster peppermint oil isnt hazardous but wasps do not like it and will fly away. If it gets on them it melts their wings. They will abandon a nest if you spray it on the nest. Peppermint oil will also keep them from coming back and rebuilding the nest. They do not like peppermint oil AT ALL. only downside is the price of peppermint oil.

      LoudyAloud(TwisterTV) Wasps and bees breath through their skin. This is why petroleum distillates, bug spray, and anything else that coats their skin kills them. They suffocate. Soapy water accomplishes this quite well and it doesn't hurt the environment. It's a lot cheaper too.

    Hornets build the same kind of honey comb looking nests, but the difference is that hornets build that paper protectant around it, paper wasps leave them open. Paper wasps are also that burnt red color and their legs hang down when they fly, like how a persons would when on a dollar coaster, those are few ways you can tell which is which...

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for commenting Kristen. I didn't know the difference until I posted this video and some experts chimed in. These have been identified as Vespula Squamosa (Southern Yellow Jacket). According to Wikipedia these look very similar to the Bald Face Hornets. Either way they are mean.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kristen Miller They build in the ground too. I know because I killed a nest that was under the roots of a pine tree this summer. I didn't dig it out so I don't know what the nest actually looked like.

      I use WD 40. The red tube applicator gives me range. I've been stung a times over my life but this time I got hit 2-3 times on my right hand and it swelled to twice its size. Never happened before. Usually I got a bump. The WD40 soaks the nests making it unusable and kills whatever bug it hits. Windex can do a job on them too if you catch them by surprise.

    European Paper Wasps - But never seen the hornet nest aspect to any of their nests here. I can help but wonder if you found a hybrid hornet colony or they change designs in a wall with a colony that massive.

    Use Carbaryl next time, I exterminated a nest a few weeks back that would have been 10 times the size of this nest. Here in New Zealand, the German wasp and Common wasp are over wintering and forming super nests. 1 teaspoon of carbaryl blown into the entrance kills them all in 24hours. They're very hygienic and will clean each other which quickly spreads it through the nest.
