Nothing negative. Colored people were another word that was used in a non-negative way. Mother-in-law, in her 90s was in the hospital with the black woman as her roommate she called her Negra. Which is a southern way to say Negro and it sounded like she was using the N-word. I went over and talked to the woman and explained, and she was so kind and generous. She said she knew she wasn’t using the N-word and that in her generation Negro was the respectable way to say black person. I, personally, am not a fan of African-American.
