Probably would have been cheaper to fully document the building, demolish it, then rebuild with the original bricks (new bricks used inside, where bulking needed) - the wood portions would need replacing anyway.
That's what they ended up doing. I think the building itself was structurally sound. It collapsed as it was being pulled. If the building wasn't structurally safe, they would have found another way to preserve it. I used to live in that area.
I looked at the building 24 hours prior to the move. I've been in construction for over 40 years as a carpenter, superintendent and project manager and the moment I saw the building I knew it would not make it. I am sorry I couldn't be there when the building came down but the video that came out following was no surprise to anyone who knew anything about moving buildings.
@@Amygondor The condition of that building was such that moving it was a fools errand. Short of de-constructing it and rebuilding it there was no way that building was going to move. No surprise really. It was butchered in order to run the overpass for route 9 years ago. Weak and loosely hanging together it didn't stand a chance. Correct. The moron that called for that to be moved should be banned from ever holding any job. It should have been mapped out on blueprints and then deconstructed in segments, packed up, labeled, and then either put into storage, or reassembled onsite immediately. @@randgartman4216
Hard to move those old buildings. Lucky no one got killed. (Sammy Ottice Lad-4 FDNY was a resident of Peekskill. He was killed on 9/11/01. What a great guy and good fireman.)
OOPS the engineers, if there were any, blew it. I cannot believe after seeing all of the shoring and disintegrating brick walls etc, that they tried to move such an unstable structure.
its a bick house, its strengt is up to down, so a movment sideways is super precarious. a brick coloums could support some huge sturktures, but just a few knocks sideways could break it. Its not like roman mortar eather. that cement was very aged to.

Yes, it was being moved. They were moving it because that bridge which carries route 9 was being replaced. Since it's a very historic fire house, they were going to make it part of a Peekskill museum. They used the bricks and made a mini replica of the fire house.
that building should have not been moved anyways. It was to far gone for being a brick building. It looked like they had to remove half the bottom anyways to get to good material for it to move
Most of the unreinforced brick buildings in SF came down in the 1906 Quake. This looks like more of the same. They just can't take any lateral load. Too brittle.
It's clear to me these people had no idea what they were doing. the cross bracing inside the building are to low to small and in the wrong places. there is no shoring or bolt cleats tieing the bricks together. after 40 years the molder starts to turn to dust. The engineer if there was one should get license revoked and sued.
The support under the front end was too small. Someone cut cost at the wrong place. There should have been at least four axles if not more. As you see, just a little tilt and the center of mass is not supported by the axles anymore.

They were moving it to make way for the bridge above to be replaced. This is a very historic fire house in the city of Peekskill. It responded to the worst fire in the history of this small city. They intended to have the entire fire house as part of a museum. Instead, they used the bricks from the collapse to make a small replica of the building. A wooden building is one thing - it's flexible . The trying to move a building that's brick-and-mortar and 150 years old =no

R L it wasn’t the structure that was the problem. It was the truck they put it on. It wasn’t balanced right

That did not collapse on it's own to go by the imagery. They failed to support it stably and it fell at an angle intact before crumbling.
i'm no expert but did they have the dolly's in the right places
no they needed to have a pair in the front instead of one, looks like the steerables were not quite in place right either
I'm all about saving historical buildings but that one looked like it was well past saving.
She was tired. 😢
that old brick building was a accident to fall down the shape was in

It looks like the thing they'd put the building on buckled and gave way, perhaps the building was unbalanced?

Good thing that guy was watching and was able to run away 😳
I’m no expert but I could of told you that was going to happen.
I would of bet it would collapse. Why would you try to move that? I see saving historic buildings but that one was not solid at all
Bridge above it had to be expanded and it was in their way. Good intentions, but she was just too tired. 😢
Not enough duct tape
As stable as a Reliant Robin
Earthquake would have brought that old brick building down anyway.
There are no earthquakes in that area. Any earthquakes are very small, no larger than 3.0
I pray no one was hurt.
No injuries at all. Just a big miscalculation.
Thanks Mike!
They moved it alright. Right into the trash
Never heard the answer to that last question!
Ray Charles could see that coming...
Did they get these guys with a Groupon ? LOL
all the negative comments..it was an old firehouse already falling the fuck apart what do you expect
That’s so sad, I would have incased it in metal bars and supported the inside a lot more so that wouldn’t happen
