When I first started playing sax in college, my instructer heard me do a slap tongue and I didn't even know I was doing it. In fact, I had a hard time playing and not slapping, but now that I know how to control it, I have lots of fun with it. It's a cool technique that gives a really cool effect when used properly.
40 or more years ago, Joe Darensbourgh promised he'd teach me how to do slap tongue on clarinet. He never got around to doing it. I want to thank earspasm for finally bringing me "up to date" with this technique. I'd encourage anyone here to listen to Joe on Yellow Dog Blues or Sweet Ga. Brown to hear a master of the art. Too bad Helen, Joe's Wife, didn't teach my wife how to do red beans, rice and gumbo. I guess we both blew it!
Earspasm, I will say this now. It has been over two years (time flies) and I have never been even close to even producing such an effect. I have been informed by other bass clarinetists who can slap tongue and they told me they learned in a month and refined over a year. Is genetics involved? I noticed that saxophone players in my band who slap tongue also have the genetic ability to roll their tongue like a hot dog. I know I don't have the trait, but is there a correlation? It is quite confusing to me after years of no success.
I'm pretty sure you don't need to be able to roll your tongue--in this other video the instructor clearly cups rather than rolls her tongue. th-cam.com/video/xb4TUvGhSkM/w-d-xo.htmlm29s
@anthonyatoyk I'm glad to know it can be done. I must start practicing now. This is one of the only extended techniques I can't do on clarinet. hopefully I can pick it up in a week as well. Bravo sir.
mastered it and have been teaching it to my section. this helps me explain it cause well....i'm not a good explaining kinda person...i just do. play sax btw, pretty much the same thing
very good video, i learned how to slap tounge just by listening to the better players in the section, and i can say for sure it is easier to do on a larger reed, aka barisax or bass clarinet rater than alto or reg clarinet(name?).
I get the sucking part with air and sucktion to the reed/mouthpiece but the hard part is to get more "tone" in the notes im playing, you hear them and the different tones but they are not clear
I can’t get any air to come out when I do it...at first it was coming out of my nose, so I tried plugging my nose, but then I only ended up popping my ears....sometimes it goes through my horn, but doesn’t make any sort of sound. This could be because I‘m using my old 5th grade plastic Yamaha clarinet, when I actually play on a Selmer Low C Bass Clarinet, but I feel like trying this on my actual horn wouldn’t give me any sort of different result. Any help?
+Teryn Stout Not sure where you live. But if you're in the US, you should definitely check out Potsdam (State University of New York at Potsdam) - they have a bass clarinet major and a very strong music department. Tell 'em I sent ya.
hello :). I got a problem after i have to close my mouth . i can do a hard suction on my read and i can do that withmy B b mouth piece in my mouth. but when i have to close my mouth , my toungue is coming out .. dunno what to do with my tongue when im in my ambousure
Hi man, i've 2 Q : 1)are "pizzicato" and "slap tongue" the same effect? what's the differences between these effects? 2) does circular breathing allow very long notes changing sound gradually from noisy sound to ord. and viceversa? how much long with no rest for take breath? sorry for my very bad english. Thank you
i dont see "pizzicato" used anywhere in reference to clarinet but considering that this technique sounds close to pizzicato on string instruments, it likely means the same thing
Um when I learned the bass clarinet I learned with a slap tongue and now years later my teacher now is trying to teach me out of it. And I'm kind of struggling because I've always have used a slap tongue?? I think I was funny to now have the problem and see this video because I learned with that technique.
Thanks man. I'm going to start attempting to work with on bass clarinet. I ultimately want to get it on soprano though. Should I start practicing on the lower voice for awhile until I master it on there to move to soprano, or do you think I start practicing both at the same time? I'm usually semi quick to catch on to extended techniques and how you explain helps a lot. Also, is always a cough for air production, or with more practice can you focus the air more to get a solid pitch? thanks again!
It's really too hard for me. Because it's not that close to me and while you doing that clock noise, I don't have my mouth piece really close while I am tonguing
This articulation seems to be largely similar to what is known in phonetics as “implosive d”-a consonant that is actually used in some languages. This fact might be useful to anybody who has more linguistics training than woodwind training.
what stiffness reeds are you using with what kind/size of mouthpiece as it is all relative. I am starting to get better at it. I am doing it on bass sax which is pretty difficult as it.
also here is what i have to play . Is from imslp so you can clikc it safetly imslp.nl/imglnks/usimg/7/71/IMSLP331779-PMLP536631-SerbanNichifor_Carnyx_OriginalVersion.pdf
Just realized - I dont want to know how Mr Sonny Fortune Lenny Pickett our own P J Perry - and the late Dexter Gordon Willis Jackson Autrey Dewalt, Earl "In Orbit" Bostic, or even our local Scotia hero Mr Bucky Adams (RIP) - dont want to know how they do or did the hypnotic things they do, or used to. Also noticing embouchure, how Mr Gordon and even supreme athlete Mr Pickett are "lockjaw" vibrato-free tonemakers - not cheek puffers - not until they seek effect (PS here LP is in Bostic land
ur right this is hard...i can get the suck technique with the finger, not with the reed...its hard to suck with the tounge at the front of the mouth..arrr...i really wanna do this..it just aint working!!! arr.. thanks for the vid
Be born in Scotland! Repeat after me; rrrrrrrround and rrrrrround the rrrrrragged rrrrrraged rrrrrrrock the rrrrragged rrrrrragged rrrrrrascal rrrrran. Your ar's don't have to be accurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrate. Pretend you're a 3hp. outboard motor and you're trolling for haggis.
2 most difficult things: - Close off the reed. Usually we just do it enough to stop the vibration. Now you have to make the entire reed _seal_ by cutting off all the air. - Suck-then-puff. Stop the suction and immediately puff out a small breath. Almost impossible - almost! Neither move can really be described - you only know them by the result. They require dedicated "dumb" practicing - pure physical repetition. The mind has to stay focused, but it can't help. So frustration is built in!
Whachout about how much time u practices this. I been practicin bas guitarr lines for an found blood whe i removed the wáter of the clarinet neck hahahahaahahah
This broke my reed twice
Kevin Min Me too! And IT HURTING!
I recommend plastic reeds for slap-tonguing because they are more durable.
TransitNerd 3687 I agree slap tounging on plastic reeds don't hurt that much

Thanks a lot. You've helped me. You're the first one to explain it so clear.
he is right!
can I show this video to my wife?
No
oh
Yes
lmaooo

YOU ARE AWESOME...THE BEST EXPLAINATION I'VE EVER GOTTEN.
and I'm a saxophone - lifer withTWO music degrees.
Great explanation...that's what I was missing, I didn't know that I need to puff air inside simultaneously. :)
Definitely the best explanation I have ever seen!
0:49......HOW DID YOU KNOW!!!!! WOW #allknowingmaster
Thanks Mike....I've been trying to find out about this for a long time...your explanation is very clear...I will begin to practice straight away...Wil
I've been trying to figure this out forever. Now I can do it! Thank you +Earspasm Music
Am I the only one breaking reeds while trying this? :S
Maybe it's just my young highschool body talking, but I didnt have a problem learning this
so i tried this for the first time today in band, i squeaked so friggin loud everyone stared at me.
Earspasm, I will say this now. It has been over two years (time flies) and I have never been even close to even producing such an effect. I have been informed by other bass clarinetists who can slap tongue and they told me they learned in a month and refined over a year.

Awesome explanation, after two days of practice I'm geting pretty nice slaps. Thank you very much sir, apreciate ya!!
@anthonyatoyk I'm glad to know it can be done. I must start practicing now. This is one of the only extended techniques I can't do on clarinet. hopefully I can pick it up in a week as well. Bravo sir.
2:59 well spent! Great clarity on explaining this!
I did it my first try, you're a great teacher ! Thanks.
Wow. That's a world record I think. Congrats Chad.
Haha, thanks. The question is, "yeah, but how well did I do it my first try?" Lol thanks again.
Amazing video! What a nice tutorial thank you! 👍I've just subscribed !
While practicing I spit all over my music 😭 Great tutorial! Thank you!
mastered it and have been teaching it to my section. this helps me explain it cause well....i'm not a good explaining kinda person...i just do. play sax btw, pretty much the same thing

your tutorials are great! thank you
Perfect explanation. Thank you so much.
very good! 👍
Very well demonstrated. Thanks for sharing!
What is this type of effect good for?
What type of style or passage would you want to put a sound like this in to make it fit and sound good?
I get the sucking part with air and sucktion to the reed/mouthpiece but the hard part is to get more "tone" in the notes im playing, you hear them and the different tones but they are not clear
Bravo finally I got the idea 👍

very well explained
GREAT explanation!!!!!! Thx so much!!!!
i learned how to do this in roughly a week :P
So, obviously you are a professional. Can you tell me where you studied? I am having a hard time finding a collage that will let me play my bass.
+Teryn Stout Not sure where you live. But if you're in the US, you should definitely check out Potsdam (State University of New York at Potsdam) - they have a bass clarinet major and a very strong music department. Tell 'em I sent ya.
+Earspasm Music Oh, and I went to Eastman
I'm in the Midwest, I'll defiantly look at it, thank you!

I know this is off topic but does anyone know if the Bass Clarinet is a Tenor-Melodic voice or Baritone Voice......I know it's not quite a Bass Voice.
What would be a good situation to use this in?
Спасибо большое. Это короткое, но очень полезное видео многое объяснило. Буду практиковаться!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍🤗
Hi man, i've 2 Q :

after he said put ur your finger in your math and create a strong suction i laughed so hard i saw a light
thank you very well explained!
Can you do this on normal soprano clarinet
I did this for fun when i first started and i had no idea it was actually a thing😂
Thank you so much ! Very good explanation :-)
Do you know how to go from low to high with out changing fingerings?
Um when I learned the bass clarinet I learned with a slap tongue and now years later my teacher now is trying to teach me out of it. And I'm kind of struggling because I've always have used a slap tongue?? I think I was funny to now have the problem and see this video because I learned with that technique.

It's really too hard for me. Because it's not that close to me and while you doing that clock noise, I don't have my mouth piece really close while I am tonguing
the easiest way to learn how to slap tongue is using a contra bass/alto reed
at least for me
I have trying but I can’t quite get it
This articulation seems to be largely similar to what is known in phonetics as “implosive d”-a consonant that is actually used in some languages. This fact might be useful to anybody who has more linguistics training than woodwind training.
How do you do this on a double reed? I need to learn this for a piece on my oboe
Mike how long did it take you to learn how to slap tongue?
How Do you not scewse the hole time?
Ah man thanks a bunch!!!!!
Thank you!
Another thought about suck/puff - it might be easier if you can circular-breathe. But that's no shortcut either - it's another high-frustration skill.
ITS A VIDEO THAT WAS MADE BEFORE MICHEAL JACKSON DIED
Record for the most 'that's what she said's in a single video.
Joe Darensbourg: Yellow Dog Blues
Awesome vid!
But you're right, my tongue does hurt. I'll continue practicing this later. :p
Any thoughts on how to do this on oboe/Eng. horn? All I have at the moment is a very sore tongue...
There is no way you're able to do this on a double Reed instrument, it's not possible
1:58 haha cool it sounds like a puppy!! But this is hard.lol.
what stiffness reeds are you using with what kind/size of mouthpiece as it is all relative. I am starting to get better at it. I am doing it on bass sax which is pretty difficult as it.
also, i have cracked a few reeds..does the toughness/ thickness of the reed simplify the technique? thanks.
Thank you so much
Not only can it bruise your tongue, but im pretty sure it can damage your reed
Great!
Hello this is off topic but do you know if its easier to learn to double tongue on Bb soprano or bass clarinet?
+Reid Norman Hard to say -- I can't double tongue on either. How lame is that??
also here is what i have to play . Is from imslp so you can clikc it safetly
imslp.nl/imglnks/usimg/7/71/IMSLP331779-PMLP536631-SerbanNichifor_Carnyx_OriginalVersion.pdf
So what is slap tonguing for?
T N It's a necessary sound for some pieces... I've heard it in a piece before called "Ku-Ku," a soprano sax solo.
Really late, but it's all over the Reed 3 part in "Chicago"
+Camden Swartz I'm even later but the bass clarinet quartet Edmund Welles uses it in multiple songs
Francaix's Theme & Variations for A Clarinet also uses 4 slap notes near the end.
It's just something you can learn to do for fun it's not used in pieces very often but it's one of those things that's fun to do when learnt properly
9 years ago wow
My friend did this so hard his air chipped his reed
Grazie!
I naturally slap tongue and it's kinda annoying when I'm trying to play fast pieces because it's a habit.
BASS CLARINET WOO.
Hello! When I try to do the "cough" thing you say I just get a normal note sound...Any tips? :)
I've seen Ashu do it
hellell yeah!

@Passion613 She might get the wrong idea... (but that's probably what you're planning)
helps! but man this is real hard...real real hard to do lol. trying to do the sucking, and puff of air at the same time is tough.
ur right this is hard...i can get the suck technique with the finger, not with the reed...its hard to suck with the tounge at the front of the mouth..arrr...i really wanna do this..it just aint working!!! arr..
thanks for the vid
I'm sure this was a perfect explanation but I still can't do it
i think we need to collaborate sometime!
Please teach me how to flutter tongue!

Thats what she said
I somehow broke 2 reeds by trying to do this slap tonguing thingy
+Wetski rip

Base clarinet
You nearly just hear the slap, not the note
its so hard!
2019
my finger is really reaaally red now...
@1mustnotbe2falt Please use punctuation.
@rctlover1 bass clarinet..
