Wonderful video! First time I've ever been able to figure this out - only been knitting for 72 years!!! Who ever said you can't teach old dogs new tricks.🤗🤣
This is brilliant!! And then the added tip of using an interchangeable needle is beyond brilliant!! Again, thank you so much for your knitting knowledge that has thought me so much invaluable techniques. 🧶
This is the only provisional cast on video that I was able to understand and finally make it click! So thank you! I have been a crocheter for many years and just started knitting this year, so it has been a huge adjustment, but I love it and I love learning new techniques! I can't wait to learn more from you. ❤
This is exactly what I was thinking - "why do waste yarn and pick up my live stitches when I can just use a cable needle and then put the tips on it?" And yay - there you are with exactly how to do this and make it work! You're my hero!
@@SuzanneBryan I'm a relatively new knitter and your videos keep me learning and learning and learning. Your i-cord video was just what i needed. Whenever the next "i have no clue how to do this!" comes along, you have a video for me So so grateful! ❣️🙏🏼♥️
Oh my gosh, I like this method so much better than using a crochet chain with waste yarn. I recently designed a prototype of something which turned out 95% gorgeous-95% because I used the waste yarn method for my provisional CO, and the unraveling messed up the live stitch line SO BADLY that I was up until the wee hours trying to rip the rows back to a point where salvagable knitting was possible. The experience was dreadful. I'm going to need to re- kit the prototype. And when I do, you can bet your boots that this is the method I will use for the provisional CO. Thank you so much for your extremely comprehensive, helpful videos.
Thank you! I'm working on a pattern where the lace and cables start right away, and I was having a problem finding all my stitches when I used a crochet chain . With this, the stitches will be sitting on the cable ready to go.

Thanks for the Video, just wondering can you make a video in the round for a few rows so I can get the complete concept from start to finish for the PC. Thank you if possible.
Suzanne, I LOVE this PCO and use it pretty exclusively. To the point that I am now trying to figure out if it is possible to use it for the first row of a tubular cast on. Have you tried it? How would I make adjustments to tubular cast on instructions for using this method instead if the waste yarn crochet?
Thank you anne! Happy knitting. Be sure to check out my new channel for live-streaming - Suzanne - Off the Cuff th-cam.com/channels/QBgFUvQzjz1RUm9NsgEA1A.html
Will this also work for knitting a cowl in the round?? And then having the 1st needle ready to go to Kitchener at the end?! Looking for another method to avoid using crochet provisional cast on!
Thank you for this great video, so easily and clearly explained as all of your videos! I’ve already used it and worked perfectly. Now I have a doubt, how do you cast on an odd number of stitches? I’ve done it removing the last one but don’t know if that’s correct. Thank you so much Suzanne, I’ve watched many of your videos and learned a lot from you, I’ll be forever grateful! When someone asks me how I learned knitting I always say from my mum when I was a little girl and from you! 😊❤️ Big hug from Barcelona

Ever since I saw this I have been using it exclusively. It’s brilliant!! It always bugged me when I used other pco that I lose a stitch - that dreaded half stitch. Having to pick it up never felt right for me. Picking up stitches is my second dreaded thing after seaming in knitting. So, THANK YOU!!!
Thank you Ljubica Jurman! Happy knitting. Be sure to check out my new channel for live-streaming - Suzanne - Off the Cuff th-cam.com/channels/QBgFUvQzjz1RUm9NsgEA1A.html
I think maybe I get it. When retrieving the loops from the provisional cast on I just put the needles I’m using for my project back on and just start knitting according to my pattern, right? I’m just a little concerned about having to work with an extra long stiff cable cord. Any addition feedback would be greatly appreciated.
@@SuzanneBryan my cable cord is one from Denise’s collection with removable needles and it’s quite thick, as big around as a size 5 needle. I find it bulky and cumbersome Thank you so much for answering.
Oh, yes, that is a problem. You might use a piece of waste yarn instead. When you do get new needles, I highly recommend Hiya Hiyas because of their flexible cables
Suzanne, I like this method but I’m a little confused…..after I cast on the number of provisional stitches for my pattern, I turn and start the first row of my pattern, right? When I come to the point where I’m ready to use the stitches of my provisional cast on, how do I do that?
I tried it on a hat and hated it and ended up in a mess. Part of the problem was that the cables were 80cm and the magic loop method wasnt easily possible. I might try again on something where the cable is shorter than the garment being made.
I just used it on some socks. It looks great so far...three rows in. I looked for this vid again because Im using a really fluffy yarn which stuck to the waste yarn when I made the first sock. Pulling the crochet loops undone was troublesome, I had to snip the fluffy yarn continually where it was all stuck together, so this method here came in really handy. I bought a small cable and used it without needles on, just the stoppers. Thanks.
This is a great method but I need more advice on how to join in the round from this cast on. It's not easy to count beyond 50 stitches on the working needle or to join in the round for 2 needles with a short stitch count. Maybe I am expecting too much from this method?
Yes, this method is not good for all purposes of provisional cast ons. I especially love it for instances such as casting on sleeve stitches when working in the round bottom up garments, as an example. You have to just experiment and see what works for you. Thank you!

That last stitch (the odd one) would have to be put on the needle like a half hitch. Good question.

No, give it a try. Work a swatch and see how it works for you. Happy knitting.

Just turn your work so that the cable holding the provisional stitches is in the working position. Add you needle tips to it and carry on.
