Jimi was playing the guitar with his teeth. If you go back and listen closely, you can hear the difference between using his pick and using his teeth.
More importantly, he is considered the greatest because he drastically change rock music forever. His music was light-years ahead of its time. He was a master showman whose influence is still felt today.. He also experimented with sounds and feedback which no one has really duplicated since. The 60s were a very volatile time with protests, riots and the war in Vietnam. If you listen to The Star Spangled Banner from Woodstock, he somehow captures that feeling. Btw, every sound he makes is intentional designed to bring out different emotions.
When Hendrix came on the scene, the whole world’s mouth dropped. He was unbelievable. Jeff Beck recalled thinking “Oh great. I’ll have to find a new career.” This year, Brian May was voted “Greatest Guitar Player of All Time.” That Jimi was named #2, 50 years after his death, at only 27 years old, speaks volumes. Imagine if he’d had another half century to improve his skills. Of being named #1, Brian May said in part; "Well, it is very humbling. Jimi is, of course, my #1 & I've always said that." "To me, he's still something superhuman. It's like he really did come from an alien planet. I will never know quite how he did what he did” & that every time he goes back to Hendrix, he's "thrilled & stunned" saying he’ll never stop learning from Hendrix. "I get that feeling all over again, like either I'm going to give up playing the guitar, because I can't face up to this, or I'm gonna really have to get into it in a big way and try & do what is in my own body and soul."

Brother had to go to England to get "discovered" His first U.S. show was this, "Monterey Pop Festival" Backstage, Jimi and Pete Townsend argued about who was gonna play the final show. Townsend said "We ain't gonna go onstage after you" Jimi stood on a chair, played the most BadAss Blues number" then said "I'm gonna pull out all the stops"

You know Jimi is #1 because there was nothing Jimi could not play. While established and highly rated guitarists like Eric Clapton had trouble with songs like "the killing Floor" Jimi blazed through it. Add to that the fact that he also composed and he's way ahead of anyone else.
My niece said she had seen a great guitarist. I said can he play the guitar with his teeth? She said no. I said can he play the guitar over his head? She said no. I said can he play the guitar behind his back? She said no. I said can he play the guitar between his legs? She said no. I said not much of a guitarist then. She said who can do all of that anyway? I said Jimi Hendrix. She said Jimi who? I said your musical knowledge astounds me!

If you want to see 2 of them handle every guitar player's worst nightmare a broken string live on stage check out the videos on TH-cam of BB King when Lucille popped a string and also Stevie Ray Vaughn who played some of the heaviest gauge strings of them all.
Also there's a video on TH-cam of Stevie Ray on a blues tribute television show doing Texas Flood and in his fly looking tux he does a Jimi Hendrix and plays the guitar behind his back.
Its a remake. When was 16, father bought him acoustic , and the next year electric - right-handed Supro Ozark that the natural lefty to flip upside down to play. So 11 years playing guitar. Monterey he's best known for wild thing, when he set his guitar on fire. ;)

Actually, "Hey Joe" was written by Billy Roberts, a 1960's Folk guitarist/singer. He wrote the song in 1962. Jimi first recorded his own version of the song in 1966. You can hear the Billy Roberts version here: th-cam.com/video/PziiNzFWZog/w-d-xo.html
