    I really like your commentary for the videos but it is a nice departure to just watch it quietly. Thanks for that.

    Most people would have cut the small limb off but you kept it and made part of the bowl. Nice job.

    Very Nice! Amazing how you turned such a nice live edge bowl from some crotch wood of a small tree branch. If it was me, I would have thrown the wood into the fire wood pile. Now, I need to reevaluate all my wood since you showed me something new.

    This video was amazing! I have watched a ton of your videos and literally learned how to turn a bowl from them. I really enjoyed watching you just turn the bowl without teaching. Like you’re alone at your lathe creating. I’m still new to turning but I was able to teach 2 friends how to turn a bowl last weekend using your techniques. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge! Also, am I imagining things or have you evolved your technique since this video was made? I frequently rewatch your videos to make sure I’m not doing stupid things. Anyway, great work and keep it up!

      JR, Thank you for writing and sharing! Evolved? I'm not sure what you're referring to. I may have done a few things different, not sure. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent

    Very nice artistic work. Love the vids and your website. I too am a fan of Tried & True finishes. I love that there was no music or voice over. Makes it much easier to focus on technique and just watch simply for the enjoyment. Thanks.

      Thank you very much. I'm glad you like this one. It's funny, because I get a mix of people liking or hating the no-voice over videos. Personally, I enjoy watching others making without interruptions as well, but there are many times when valuable information needs to be shared. Thanks again!

    Hi Kent,
    Great piece, again and as always!
    I like nature to stay visible.
    Please allow me to ask you a question.
    In your opinion, when can one and when should one not include core/heart wood in a live/natural edge blank?
    This piece is turned with the whole branche, including the core/heart wood.
    As I understand in this case using the whole thickness of the branch enables you to make the bowl deeper and have wood for a tennon.
    But I get warned all the time for cracks ruining the piece, so I wonder what that gray area is.
    Thanks, and happy turning to you to!
    Ray

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The short answer - heart wood always, but probably avoid the pith (very center). It all depends on the timber species and conditions, primarily moisture. I've seen wood with zero heart or pith crack like crazy and I've turned pieces which include the whole pith area and they didn't crack. You need to experiment, explore and discover what works for you and your local available timbers. Happy Turning!

    Very nice bowl, well done. I just found your channel, I liked & subscribed . My question to you is what is that extension on the tail stock called, & where can i get one. I have a very old Rockwell Delta lathe that I got running after setting for 20 years in someones shed,lots of work, but I got it going. The travel on the tail stock is only 2 inches, I think that extension would make life much better. Thank you & happy turning

    when I try to turn a large object like that between centers it always spins. I can do small stuff and I use a mallet to drive the center first. It does have four spurs but came with the lathe so maybe is not the best. I do crank down the tail stock but is still strips out on the head side. Any suggestions.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hm? Tight tailstock? Four spurs? Is the center slipping in the headstock maybe?

    • @jeffreyglaude5937
      @jeffreyglaude5937 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TurnAWoodBowl that might be part of the problem but the spur does start to turn in the wood. I'll have to give it a go again. If it does start in the head stock how do I stop that. It happens if I try to do anything moderate or heavy. Once it starts it seems impossible to stop so I put it on a faceplate

  • @JamieFlarity

    This is amazing. I just watched your microwave drying video, subscribed, then came across this one. I have a question about drying. How green was the branch before you started? Are you worried about cracking? Does the fact that it is so thin help keep it from cracking since there is less moisture to lose? Is it less of an issue because it's Elm? Amazing work.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great questions. I have turned pieces from this elm on several occasions, so I know the wood a bit. It was not super green, but still held moisture. And yes, turning thin, allows the wood to equalize quickly. Cracks usually form from one area remaining moist while an adjacent area dries out. I suggest everyone start with one local tree species and get to know it and how it behaves, then add another and another. Happy Turning!

    Why don’t you use a face plate whis a jam shuck?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I use a jam chuck so that I can make small adjustments to the balance of the bowl, as I progress.

    Great job, was that shellac finishes, and if so do you keep a piece of cloth in it at all times.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is Tried and True Danish Oil (pure linseed oil). And the cloth will harden up over time if left in air.
