    Hi Sandi, Thanks to you and Cooper for sharing your process. :) One thought: this painting differs from your others in the proportion of the items on the table to those on the rug. The rug really pulls forward and the objects on the table seem farther away than usual. So to me there's a bit of a clash in what your eye is doing as you look at the scene. In some of your other paintings, the ones you seem more exited about, the objects on the table are proportionately larger, making them feel closer to the viewer and helping to animate the table. Making the objects larger would also affect the amount of white space of the table. Anyway, this might not be at all what you want to do with how the scene meshes together, but I thought I'd throw that observation into the mix. Oh, the challenges of resolving a painting! Have a great weekend. :)

    • @SarahBaileyArts
      @SarahBaileyArts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Sandi, I agree with Sally above (very thoughtful observations by the way!) - the table and the rug are competing, I think because the rug design is the same size as the objects on the table. I know you don't usually paint shadows but I think some sort of shadow on the rug might help, or making the rug overall darker and enlarging the items on the table. I know you've moved on but I just kept thinking through the whole video "the rug is competing with the table!" so I just had to say something. :) Love your videos as always!

    My days are brighter when I start my day with you Sandi! But now after binge-watching your vids I'm experiencing separation anxiety! I know it's the last thing you want to hear but would you PLEASE consider giving a workshop or short classes? I'd happily pay for a chance to learn from you. It feels like it's the next logical step. And with your help and a commitment to paint with you I might be able to shake the terror of the blank canvas that's so paralyzing. Bet I'm not the only person requesting this :) Waving from Toronto!

    Look at your white cabinet and note the shading. It is nit all white white because if the shadows. Maybe that is what you need to do. I don’t know I am grasping at straws here too. I think it is a good piece all in all so when you get happy it will be great!

    Sandi, don't give up on this painting! If you were one of my students a couple of critiques I would give--1. the reason the cat is an issue (after reading thru comments) is that its painted in a different style compared to the rest of the painting. (Something I have to be aware of in my work, too, lol!) I think if you made the cat black or at least a very dark grey and used less value changes in defining it, it would then match the rest of the simplicity and flatness of the rest of the objects in the painting. Also, to balance it add another cat somewhere in the background on the right but smaller with a similar color but less intensity. This will help balance the other cat. 2. Replace the "sun" in the background with a chandelier of some sort hanging over the table. This will help push the scene in the window into the background. People commented on the intensity of the curtains but actually the "sun" is what keeps pulling the background forward. Bottom line-if you are fed up with the whole image and there is a section of it that really speaks to you, you can always remove it from the stretcher and cut it down to just the section you think works and restretch it... I saw in some comments that people thought your painting was too busy but that is your style! Don't change it! Your paintings do "reward looking"! There is so much to explore within your designs. A successful work will capture the viewer and make them stay and look awhile...The new painting you showed is gorgeous! Can't wait to see the finished work on both pieces!

    Hello Sandi... some questions regarding priming canvases and the large paper you paint on.
    1. Do you use gesso or another "primer " to prep either?
    2. Why or why not ...to prime or not to prime on each type of substrate?
    Benefits
    Pluses or minuses ect...
    3.which is better, especially for those wanting to sell thier work?...
    4. What is the difference between painting directly on the paper or canvas without prepping vs a primed or gessoed surface?
    *by canvas I mean ready canvas not raw.

  • @xxjones
    @xxjones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Sandi, let me say first that I love the way you paint and share your processes.
    To me, the table is not the problem, but the dark curtains and pink wall and maybe the cat. I somehow agree with @Sally Ann Sims that the things on the table and the rug are competing with each other, but that is ok to me. Then there is also the harbour, and the lady in the back, so there is a lot going on. I feel the curtains, the wall and the cat draw too much attention away from the more interesting things. The curtain and the wall could be the same colour, such as pastel yellow or light blue, or picking up the colour of the table, and recede more, and the cat could go as well. So the floor and the walls frame and connect the fun, whimsical busy areas of the painting. I hope you don't mind, me throwing my 2 cents in, it's like solving a riddle!

    I love you, Cooper and your videos!!!! I love this painting and hope one day you resolve it. Leave it in the cupboard for a little longer. My thoughts are maybe the floorboards draw your eye further back rather than to the table. I also think pussy cat is too big so competes with the table. I think a small a smaller one asleep in a basket would be super cute. I would also ditch the woman as she is making my eye go back there. I think if the rug was made a warmer colour but still darker in value than the table it may sort out the competition between the table and rug.i would also be inclined to make items on table much bigger. And reduce the amount of competing patterns on the table. Love your style soooo much. I get so excited when I see your videos in my feed!!!

    I really liked the pale yellow table phase, it gave a warm and cozy atmosphere. I find that the cat in that position polarizes attention too much, maybe if it was a bit far back it be better. Of course that's just my opinion!

    Thank you so much for sharing even the fails. But I have a question about the figure (bust) on the top right that is floating there. Just incase you have become painting blind. It happens to me often. I recall taking a figure painting class and I was looking at the model and working the marks paying attention more to the subject than the painting. Then the teach comes by and says “well now that is interesting!!” I was in the zone but now self conscious about what she meant because ‘interesting’ never means as it should. She explains that I have completely inverted the painting. I was painting the mirror imagine. Well when I looked that was all I saw. ‘it was going good ...until it wasn’t.’ Big Hugs. 💕🐞💕

    I LOVE me some Mr. Cooper!!! Sweet boy! Maybe he’s jealous of the cats in your painting. He’s saying, “mom, if you put me in your painting, it will be perfect!” Lol
    I do have a question for ya. Is there as much of a color shift when dry with Flashe Paint vs Acrylic? Good for you for putting your “closet painting” away...so it could later inspire new work. Yayyy you!!!

      Cooper's jealous of anyone/thing I give attention to that's not him :) - he's a mama's boy and loves me to pieces! If I start talking to our cats - he comes running and stands there looking at me like he's really annoyed that they're in our life :). Flashe doesn't seem to have as much as a shift I don't think

    You were not liking how bright the table was and how much it stood out. How about trying to go for a brown wood coloured table when you are having this problem?
    Most tables do not stand out and almost blend into the room/environment a bit because they are wood coloured especially when there are other wood features in a room, maybe this is an automatic detail your brain is focusing on/looking for.
    Also even though I think all the chaos of so many details gives your work charm I am wondering if you are struggling with the overall feel because you have a hectic rug design next to a table with a lot of stuff on it, maybe you are personally struggling with feeling like it needs more space for the eyes to rest.
    But if that is the issue, do not get rid of the rug design because I feel this is what you like about this picture.
    hmmm look at the chair at the front, the plain seat part gives a bit of space for the eye to rest...maybe in this situation you can add plain objects under the tables edge to give small spaces for the eyes to rest without loosing items on the table or without loosing a rug design which may be too large an area to leave plain.
    If I was you I would just play in the software program you are using so you can just try lots of things.
    I personally thought it looked fine all the colours you tried and I think it looks good and finished but pictures look different to everyone and i'm thinking of how you are perceiving it and what you may be struggling with/not liking.
    Good luck with it.

    Yellow is pretty but difficult. I usually add a tiny bit of dioxinine purple to yellow to give it some body. Not enough to change or dull the colour. It just seems to fix the table top problem you have.

    I am at minute 17 and one thing I don’t like about this painting is that the rug is too similar in colour to the water outside the window. Also the bottom half of the painting confounds the eye with detail.

      Maybe others will disagree about the rug. I’d like to hear. I would prefer a green rug with a pattern in the original blue. Pattern instead of animals. That’s just me and believe me I cannot paint with your talent. I can’t draw either because my hands are not steady.
