    Right on brother. The poncho tarp is the way to go. It's an awesome multi use piece of kit. You can pack it so you can keep your backpack on and pull out the poncho to throw over you and the pack and then put it away just as quickly. It covers more, breathes more, weights less and can be used for a tarp, bivy, ground sheet, alpine pack, water collection...it's just so much better than rain paints and jacket. Thanks for the video.

    Joe, another good thing about the poncho is that it doubles as a pack cover when you are hiking. It's been my "go to" piece of wet weather gear for the last 15 years in the military. Keep the great vids coming, I enjoy watching them down here in Louisiana!

    we've been a member of BCUSA for a minute and never even noticed the store. thanks Joe, may pick up this ponch tarp by them. As always, a great video, we cheered for you on alone by the way, well you and Mitch (Nate was a long time fan of Mitch aka Nativesurvival). I know Alan won, but would have been nice to see the "underdog little guy" win. Anyways, loving this series as we catch up on our youtube bushcraft vids after a long hiking season (it was warm for so long, might as well make use of it). -Mary & Nate

      +SpiritofWildWings I think he's an alright guy and I like his videos and everything, but this isn't gear he just happened to come across and decide to try out. he's a mod for bushcraftUSA, and the owner of bushcraftUSA is also the owner of bushcraftoutfitters. so yes, this is a commercial.

    • @grindstone4910
      @grindstone4910 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +karlhungusjr1 He doesn't get paid to be a mod and doesn't directly personally profit from increased poncho sales. So the only question that remains is did he buy it or was it given to him?

    • @karlhungusjr1

      Grindstone "doesn't directly personally profit from increased poncho sales."
      people appearing in commercials are usually compensated for it.

    I like this and the dual purpose is pretty cool. One draw back is once you have the tarp set up you wont have rain gear to go out and gather wood, explore or leave the shelter without getting soaked if 9t's raining. Guess everything is a little give and take. Pretty cool set up you shared. Thanks.

    As someone else stated and as I've found personally, once your poncho is set up for a tarp if it starts to pour, you're pretty much confined to under the poncho. Only other option is 2 ponchos, might still be lighter and smaller than a rainsuit? Always enjoy your videos Joe. Thanks

    It looks similar to the U.S.G.I. poncho that I have been using. Perhaps mine is a bit heavier. But they are worth their weight for sure. For a $100 American the multicam version is a no go for many people, however they do offer less expensive options. That said, if you can find them the old Bundeswehr poncho is hard to beet when it comes to a multi use item. It is the only poncho I know of that has full cloth webbing reinforcement like the British BASHA.
    Sadly, mine has seen better days and has been reduced to bed roll outer layer-it forms the outside layer followed by an American poncho liner and then a heavy Canadian poncho liner. A bit heavy compared to some set ups but very nice.
    I also like the Mil-tec poncho's, haven't had one fail me yet although you do have to seal the seam where the sash goes.

    Sweet looking poncho. Looks like a good comfy set up.
    I'm a fan of the poncho, have a couple of German Army Ponchos (rubberised type) they are heavy but incredibly hardwearing. I have a alpaca wool poncho I can wear underneath too.
    Have recently scored a USGI ponco and wobble to experiment with as a lightweight camping option.
    Keep on with the great vids amigo & hope the trip comes off well.
    Kind regards

    Nice piece of gear. The advantage is that it is dual purpose, however the disadvantage also is that it's dual purpose. Imagine being out on your canoe trip and it is raining the whole day. You would still need to do chores and process wood for example. If your shelter is put up, what will you wear out in the rain? I'm mainly a hammock camper and my tarp is only a tarp, however I would consider brining this as rain gear and use it for extra shelter (eating area or gear storage area). Looking forward to the other videos on this series!

    • @josephallen19
      @josephallen19  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Yup, I agree, I will not be using this as my shelter on my canoe trip, I will be using this as my rain gear, and it has the advantage of being an extra tarp if needed.
      I will be using my Big Agnes Tent.
      Thanks, man!

    Another great video Joe. I find I also prefer ponchos to raingear when I am backpacking or day hiking. They breathe better and are more rainproof than even good old Gortex. Even my cheapo Dollarama one has done me well. However, I have been told that ponchos can be a drowning hazard in a canoe. I am guessing that is because if the canoe were to capsize, the poncho might be more likely to pull you under than traditional rain gear. What do you think of that theory?

    • @josephallen19
      @josephallen19  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Louise Hiker Thanks, I think that it is just that, a theory.
      I am a strong swimmer, and will have trail runners on, not big hiking boots, and I have never tipped, or been in a canoe that has tipped in the middle of a lake, it always happens getting in or out of the canoe.
      I'm honestly not worried about it one bit.

    hey Joe, I'm new to bcusa and and to the multi-cam poncho, it's marketed as flame retardant, what's the closest you've been to a fire with the poncho and have you yet to burn any whole in it? I'm looking to start upgrading my kit and my usgi is one of my most use pieces of gear and I'd like to use it in a plow point configuration next to the fire in the winter time, I know it's an old vid so sorry for the delay Lol, thanks

  • @FusionStream
    @FusionStream 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't get you get condensation problems with the poncho? Does the rain fall mostly straight down in your area? Where I've been camping, the wind swirls and pushes the rain drops slightly under then above wherever the tarp stops.

    Good kit 👍. Just having That one tarp on an 8 day trip that you are using for both shelter and personal protection could be a problem if it's lashing down while you are in camp and camp tasks need completing but you don't have any protection as it's being used as your tarp. Would make it a little harder but always good to challenge ourselves 👍👍.

      I have used the sea to summit nylon poncho tarp on a couple trips now with heavy rain. Best poncho ever. Mine is just the PU coated not the Silnylon. I believe it's 13 oz. and 4.5 x 8.6 feet. Perfect size to cover you and a large pack and perfect to create a covered area by your tent to cook under in the rain.

    How do you deal with coyotes when your camping out in tarp shelter?

      I've never had them come close, when I have Scout with me, I tie him up at night, so they can't lure him out.

    Great video series man! Really do love your videos! Just one question, and not trying to be a "tough Guy" on youtube but, say you have your poncho (which truly is a nice piece of gear btw) set up as your tarp, and its raining. What if you need to go out and forage or collect more wood etc. what would you wear as rain gear? Do you also pack your rain gear just in case? Like I said, great video as always Joe.

    nice poncho. I used one alot when in the Army. they are great but do not work well in a tank. they got caught in to many things. I'll be looking forward to your videos on your camping trip. I'll be buying one of their tarps in two weeks. Going to get a 10x10. buying it based on your recommendations. keep up the good work. where was scout? is he ok?

      Cory Boyd awesome, Cory. Ya, Scout is all good, it was just too hot and buggy for him to be exposed all night.
      Thanks man.

    If it is raining out, wouldn't you need 2 Ponchos? 1 to wear and 1 as a tarp?

    Can 2 or more be snapped (using the metal snaps) together to make a bigger shelter like the USGI Ponchos?

      Thanks for the reply brother. Any chance we can get a vid where you connect 2 together in the future? Emergency expedient shelter etc?

    Sooo... What do you do when is raining out & you need to set up your tarp? How about you got to get up when nature calls & its raining. Be nice to have a backup plan. Just a thought.

      Max Allister This is an emergency type piece of kit.
      When I go on my canoe trip I will use this as my rain gear, and extra tarp, I will sleep in a small Big Agnes tent.
