The Owner of the Previous Generation 51m R1 Cannot Upgrade their CPU nor GPU because Intel has changed the socket specifications for its new 10th Gen desktop chips. for the GPU you CAN'T upgrade to RTX 2070 or 2080 Super which is frustrating. So yeah the owners of R1 should consider that.
Yes this was a disappointment for all of us (I was an Area-51m R1 owner previously) as we couldn't upgrade to even this small bump to the SUPER GPUs. But looking at other laptops, the R2 is still the best overall in terms of specs, keyboard, screen, aesthetics, warranty, etc. I sold my R1 at a good price so this was just an upgrade which would've cost me about the same if I were to upgrade components manually (ie. faster RAM, CPU, and Graphics card).
@@LeuBlue Yes you can. The Area-51m R1 for example you can upgrade from RTX 2060 to RTX 2070 or 2080. Within the same gen it's possible if the the GPU is an MXM form factor. (ie. not soldered)
I first ordered the 51m R1 and thank cancelled it becouse you could not upgrade cpu or gpu. even the upgrade kit that they promised from rtx 2060 to 2070 or to 2080. they dont even sell those at all. so no cpu no gpu upgrade. that did not make it any different than other laptops. also no upgrade to the new super cards. i had to order the r2 and lets hope that they use this socket on next gen cpus at least.

No, the i7-10700 should be perfectly fine for gaming and in fact it will run cooler. Most games are GPU dependent not CPU so getting the i9-10900K just to get 3-5 FPS more in a game is not worth it and not noticeable at all. Yes but if you bought it from HIDevolution and choose GELID GC Extreme for the thermal compound and the Fujipoly Extreme thermal pads then the laptop never overheats even with the i9. You can choose that option in the laptop configurator then in the Order notes state that you want PHOBYA NanoGrease Extreme as that's even better and it's the same price. That's what I got

I had the r1 dark side of the moon. White is ok but the black looks amazing. I was hoping they’d get rid of that cheap looking plastic bezel. Sucks because the rest of the laptop looks amazing. Mine got hairline scratches on the bezel because I wiped it.

An overheating and thermal throttling i9-109000K is no better than a low end i5 but if you have a good bin and good thermal pate and it's not overheating then you don't need to spend more money. Look at my Cinebench R23 benchmarks in the NBR Forum post linked in the description and compare them to yours to see if you are getting a score in the same range at least.
What desktop or laptop GPU? This is not 2015 anymore there are such designations anymore It's all about TDP and this has the highest TDP in a laptop. 180W

4k is good for editing and where u need the resolution. Only 60hz so 2k is best option for gaming. Same goes for i9 and i7, I prefer i7 for gaming because i9 gets too hot

Didn't overclock a thing, simply because of the thermal upgrades that HIDevolution did which in turn ensures you get the max CPU speeds and no throttling. Also, you have to change the nVIDIA Power Management from the default/crappy Optimal to Adaptive (then reboot). Is the 1080p display nice in person? I’m looking for an all round great laptop, this is by far the best, except the display is only 1080p. Should I look for other laptops with higher resolution displays?
the screen resolution is subjective. I personally enjoy playing on a high refresh rate screen much more than I enjoy the 4K resolution because the smoothness and game-play fluidity is on a whole different level when you try a 144hz or even higher refresh rate. You will probably never go back to lower refresh rates after you experience how much better gaming on a high refresh rate screen is but some people like content creators will prefer the higher resolution. Not to mention, with a 4K resolution it takes a toll on your frame-rate which may be alright now but with future games it may be a problem as game graphics are always improving so you might end up needing to lower the eye candy for future games to get a decent frame-rate. In addition, at the native 4K resolution, things appear too small for you to see so you would end up doing DPI scaling which is not perfect in Windows like it is on MacOS. If an app wasn't programmed properly to play with DPI scaling, it might look blurry or have misaligned text/buttons plus if you're going to have to do DPI scaling, then why opt for a 4K screen in the first place? Just my 2 cents

Well it depends on you usage habits. For me, I am a person who formats his laptop a lot so I like having the OS/installed programs and games on the main SSD and my personal data on another SSD so when I format, everything is left intact on the other drive and two. I simply have a lot of movies. So the 2TB (RAID 0) goes for Windows + Programs + Games and the 2nd/3rd 1TB SSDs are dedicated for storing movies, ISO files, and my Software library which contains my large Software suite (setup EXEs and whatnot of all my programs)

We do not have any information about the release of the nVIDIA 3XXX series for laptops. Once a new desktop GPU is released, it takes about 8-12 months for them to start being made for laptops. Future upgrades are also not guaranteed as that all depends on whether or not nVIDIA will change the form factor and power requirements of the new GPU.
1 Hour, desktop replacement laptops are not meant to be used on battery. Think of it as a power outage backup or simple to be able to move from one location to another while the laptop is on. Thing is that for most of the world who cant get HID evolution due to import tarrifs and shipping and currency conversion, you should kind of state it in the title that this is a review of a modded laptop.. A stock one will be nothing like this in terms of temps.
I cannot see why dell deleted two Ram slots one of the things that a lot of people like is a lot of ram in there system you may not need it but they like to have a lot of ram when you look at the MSI Titan you can have 64GB ddr4 Ram for a fraction of the price of the Alienware
The R2 has the option to have up to 3200mhz RAM vs the slower speeds available in other laptops. Think of it as quality vs quantity. Sacrifices had to be made as the higher clock speeds don't work as well when you introduce more than 2 slots according to my grasp of the matter.

I had a MacBook Pro 16 fully maxed out a few months ago just to try the Mac Side. BIG mistake, it never felt like I was using a 7K USD laptop and IMHO MacOS is unintuitive and lacks a lot of basic apps that Windows has such as a decent download manager that can actually integrate into your browser to intercept download links automatically and let you download streaming videos (I use Internet Download Manager for that on Windows). This laptop will blow away any Mac out of the water.

@@zenbrucelee2653 Yes I saw that last week. It has 5ms response time though and you wouldn't notice a difference between 300hz and 360hz like you would when upgrading from 120hz to 300hz. I would personally choose the 300hz/3ms for the best gaming experience although 5ms is still not bad, way better than 25ms on the 4K screen models.

@@super.spartan so what about in regards to having a 4K screen and using 1440p as an option in games? Since as of right now Alienware doesn't offer a 1440p monitor, however there is a few laptops that have 1440p and 165HZ. However there are more of a sleeker laptop so you can't utilize a discrete cpu and gpu. Since 1080p makes no sense with a 2080 super, I feel 1440p is a sweet spot, but that means having to get the 4K screen. and how bad of a difference is 25 milliseconds versus 5. Is there any ghosting?
It has 4 m.2 slots. You can order it either with 4 m.s SSDs total or two m.2 SSDs and one 2.5 inch drive (SSD or HDD). If you choose the latter, we will install the Dell Interposer board for you which is like a converter, combines the 2 slots and converts them to a 2.5 inch bay.

It's a one time job, permanent. To put it in layman's terms, Intel puts low quality thermal paste between the actual CPU Die and the IHS (integrated heat spreader). To improve this, we remove the IHS by cutting through from all corners ensuring that we do not cut through the PCB of the CPU using precision tools then remove the IHS. We then remove the stock thermal paste that Intel put and replace that with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut which is a far better soltion in terms of heat dissipation.. HIDevolution is one of the very few system builders that can do this for you and not void your CPU warranty since we do it in-house. The cooling upgrade alone would be a huge reason to upgrade from the R1 to the R2.

You can't really change the gpu on a laptop. Only mid range mobile gpu like the 960m

4k is good for editing and where u need the resolution. Only 60hz so 2k is best option for gaming. Same goes for i9 and i7, I prefer i7 for gaming because i9 gets too hot

Didn't overclock a thing, simply because of the thermal upgrades that HIDevolution did which in turn ensures you get the max CPU speeds and no throttling. Also, you have to change the nVIDIA Power Management from the default/crappy Optimal to Adaptive (then reboot). If you get it from Dell then yes, unless you are able to replace the thermal paste yourself and install thermal pads then it'll be fine. What Thermal Interface Materials option did you go with
1) The CPU is de-delidded by HIDevolution, that reduces temps by around 10C. 2) PHOBYA NanoGrease Extreme Thermal Compound on the CPU + GPU. 3) Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads on heat sensitive components (installed by HIDevolution). Without these upgrades, this laptop will immediately reach 100C and thermal throttle but now it performs like a champ beating even high end desktop computers.

Is the 1080p display nice in person? I’m looking for an all round great laptop, this is by far the best, except the display is only 1080p. Should I look for other laptops with higher resolution displays?
the screen resolution is subjective. I personally enjoy playing on a high refresh rate screen much more than I enjoy the 4K resolution because the smoothness and game-play fluidity is on a whole different level when you try a 144hz or even higher refresh rate. You will probably never go back to lower refresh rates after you experience how much better gaming on a high refresh rate screen is but some people like content creators will prefer the higher resolution. Not to mention, with a 4K resolution it takes a toll on your frame-rate which may be alright now but with future games it may be a problem as game graphics are always improving so you might end up needing to lower the eye candy for future games to get a decent frame-rate.
In addition, at the native 4K resolution, things appear too small for you to see so you would end up doing DPI scaling which is not perfect in Windows like it is on MacOS. If an app wasn't programmed properly to play with DPI scaling, it might look blurry or have misaligned text/buttons plus if you're going to have to do DPI scaling, then why opt for a 4K screen in the first place? Just my 2 cents

Well it depends on you usage habits. For me, I am a person who formats his laptop a lot so I like having the OS/installed programs and games on the main SSD and my personal data on another SSD so when I format, everything is left intact on the other drive and two. I simply have a lot of movies. So the 2TB (RAID 0) goes for Windows + Programs + Games and the 2nd/3rd 1TB SSDs are dedicated for storing movies, ISO files, and my Software library which contains my large Software suite (setup EXEs and whatnot of all my programs)

We do not have any information about the release of the nVIDIA 3XXX series for laptops. Once a new desktop GPU is released, it takes about 8-12 months for them to start being made for laptops.
Future upgrades are also not guaranteed as that all depends on whether or not nVIDIA will change the form factor and power requirements of the new GPU.

Thing is that for most of the world who cant get HID evolution due to import tarrifs and shipping and currency conversion, you should kind of state it in the title that this is a review of a modded laptop.. A stock one will be nothing like this in terms of temps.
I cannot see why dell deleted two Ram slots one of the things that a lot of people like is a lot of ram in there system you may not need it but they like to have a lot of ram when you look at the MSI Titan you can have 64GB ddr4 Ram for a fraction of the price of the Alienware
The R2 has the option to have up to 3200mhz RAM vs the slower speeds available in other laptops. Think of it as quality vs quantity. Sacrifices had to be made as the higher clock speeds don't work as well when you introduce more than 2 slots according to my grasp of the matter.

I had a MacBook Pro 16 fully maxed out a few months ago just to try the Mac Side. BIG mistake, it never felt like I was using a 7K USD laptop and IMHO MacOS is unintuitive and lacks a lot of basic apps that Windows has such as a decent download manager that can actually integrate into your browser to intercept download links automatically and let you download streaming videos (I use Internet Download Manager for that on Windows). This laptop will blow away any Mac out of the water.

@@zenbrucelee2653 Yes I saw that last week. It has 5ms response time though and you wouldn't notice a difference between 300hz and 360hz like you would when upgrading from 120hz to 300hz. I would personally choose the 300hz/3ms for the best gaming experience although 5ms is still not bad, way better than 25ms on the 4K screen models.
@@super.spartan yeah but they only give as a choise right now 360hz with 5ms response time and not the 300hz with 3ms response time. :( But i will buy in like 4 months so there can happend a lot. But i really would prefer 300hz because it is 2 times lesser response time and this 60 fps makes really not so a huge difference in my opinion as well.

@@super.spartan so what about in regards to having a 4K screen and using 1440p as an option in games? Since as of right now Alienware doesn't offer a 1440p monitor, however there is a few laptops that have 1440p and 165HZ. However there are more of a sleeker laptop so you can't utilize a discrete cpu and gpu. Since 1080p makes no sense with a 2080 super, I feel 1440p is a sweet spot, but that means having to get the 4K screen. and how bad of a difference is 25 milliseconds versus 5. Is there any ghosting?
How many m.2 slots does this one have? Ad I've seen only 1 m.2 slot and 1 2.5" drive bay
It has 4 m.2 slots. You can order it either with 4 m.s SSDs total or two m.2 SSDs and one 2.5 inch drive (SSD or HDD). If you choose the latter, we will install the Dell Interposer board for you which is like a converter, combines the 2 slots and converts them to a 2.5 inch bay.

It's a one time job, permanent. To put it in layman's terms, Intel puts low quality thermal paste between the actual CPU Die and the IHS (integrated heat spreader).
To improve this, we remove the IHS by cutting through from all corners ensuring that we do not cut through the PCB of the CPU using precision tools then remove the IHS. We then remove the stock thermal paste that Intel put and replace that with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut which is a far better soltion in terms of heat dissipation..
HIDevolution is one of the very few system builders that can do this for you and not void your CPU warranty since we do it in-house.
By delidding your CPU, you can expect temperature drops between 10 to 15C

Also for customer that DO want Liquid Metal, we have a proprietary method of application that prevents spillage/leaking even when the laptop is moved.
