Never Leave Port On A Friday - Ep. 39 RAN Sailing
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 10 ก.พ. 2025
- After arriving to St. George's in Grenada we find out that our dinghy, Shabby, is leaking air. Then we sail to Carriacou but have turn back due to unexpected problems. We should have listened to the old salties and never left on a Friday ;)
We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us.

Malin & Johan
Always give these kids thumbs up. They are amazing people, good citizens of the world.
Hi
I really enjoy seeing Johan working on the boat. Very methodical and organised.
He's amazing! :) /Malin
I have to say, one of my favourite things in this channel, is watching Johan work on RAN. I think it's mesmerizing how pondered, efficient and skilled he is. I'm serious, I could watch you build or repair things for hours! My other favourite thing is Malin's video editing (and music choice) skills, that I already have been watching for hours.
Thank you so much! :) Makes us very happy!
i'm quite convinced that the Titanic would not have sunk if Johan had been in charge - he defines the word resourcefulness, v best to you both and be safe
moz You can be as resourceful as can be, not much you can do about bad ship design and a damage to your hull of 100 meters long.
I think that maybe Moz was speaking rhetorically.
I think moz's point is that there would not have been 100 meters of damaged hull if Johann had been in charge.
Yup, running into icebergs is never a sign of good seamanship.
The Titanic didn't sink. It was her sister ship the Olympic that sunk. The owners swapped the almost identical boats over at the shipyard after the Olympic sustained severe structural damage during her sea trials. Plenty of books and documentaries on the subject.
People who dont live on a boat cannot imagine how things can go wrong boating, but ... the Captain has always a solution.
Cheers, Guy.
So true! It's hard to imagine all the work and maintenance a sailboat requires. Thanks for watching!
Lets get this straight!! Relaxing on a boat with a broken toe with an incredible view, beautiful rum drink and a viking taking care of you?!!!!! Bless. Another great video.
I looked pretty content didn't I? :) He's spoiling me :) /Malin
RAN Sailing Johan, you are very good to Malin.
Every weeks starts with a lookout for news from Ran...
Every few times a day för min del
:)
Cool! :)
Respekt Malin som på ett sådant positivt sätt tacklar fotproblemet. Läckra bilder på däcket och jobbet där. Trevligt och se er ! :) /Mange
Tack Mange :)
Just so you know, you don't go crazy if you eat nutmeg. It's a really mild hallucinogen, you don't see things appearing in front of you. If you close your eyes though you see all sorts of shapes and colors, like a winamp visualization, so there's nothing to be afraid of. You also don't get sick because of the effect or anything, you can get sick because of the taste lol. If you put a bit on food it's good but if you eat a whole spoon of it, that's a whole different story...
Shaby is a great name for your dinghy...lol...it's loaded with character...great video!
I'm listening to Brave or Stupid on Sailing Stories. It's about two middle aged Swedes sailing around the world. They mention that the Swedish version of 'crossing our fingers' was sticking your thumb out (or something along to see lines). they said what the German version was too, but I've forgotten. :(
I think it's time for a new dingy!!! That one has seen better days... Who knows maybe some viewer with the extra cash in their pocket will buy and send you a new one!!! Here's to hoping!!!!!
Just as you're leaving St. Georges with Malin at the helm, I spied your GIGANTIC winches again. Made me laugh. Thanks once again for taking us along on your fantastic adventure.
They are pretty big :)
Peter is such a classy guy. Really cool seeing footage of places I had visited in Grenada. Thanks for another great video!
The start of your video makes sailing and accident recover such a peaceful moment, the sunsets and rum may be great but the recovery from your accident is not easy! I am surprised to see your bilge filling with water as something you just found, hope it is easy to fix. The dingy problems most suck, but your ability to fix everything shows would make a great engineer! I cannot wait to see more!
Just signed on as a Patreon because your videos are so real and relaxing.
Welcome to our patron crew and thank you so much for your support! :)
When I don't think your videos can get any better, they do. Great job. Malin - you are a real trooper - like the energizer bunny. Johan - nice job on that dinghy repair. MY only reason for not going out on Fridays is that all the "crazies" are out on the weekends. Thanks!
Thanks a lot Ron! :)
Looked like a sensible decision to turn back, that amount of water coming in is not good! Great video as usual.
Great video! Considering how much madness there is in the world, it makes me truly happy to see two people who obviously like one another, who get along so peacefully, and who are using their lives so wisely. I hope you're wonderful adventures never end! Never!
Thank you so much :)
As always, you make it seem so natural to share your lives with 24,000 subscribers - as if we are all your friends! Which of course we'd like to be. Happy sailing - I too will avoid sailing on Fridays from now on .... 😅
We see you all as our friends and love to have you with us on our adventure!
I've watched a few episodes now. I'm going to go back and binge watch from the start. Hope your toe feels better soon. You're a real stoic.
Malin, good to see the toe is healing and you're getting around better.
Great video
Thank you Bastien!
I'll remember that :"never leave port on a Friday" , great video again 👍.
Malin, its good to see that your foot is getting better. This was another great video from you guys! Well done keep them coming.
You both are the most amazing couple I have ever seen! With that said I have been following for a little bit and that you have the best life on earth, free! Love to follow you both and thanks so much for the videos and girl, get better! I felt so sorry for your injury OMG!
Been binge watching you guys from England for a week now! Gotta say, your English is superb; even the colloquial stuff is perfect. 👍👍 Keep up the great vids and stay safe.
Good to see your toe is healing by this episode. That looked like a nasty accident.....but you handled it well. Well done!
And another great video. Well done guys!
Thank you Bill!
Always entertaining, and never boring. Great vid!
Thank you so much! :)
Thanks Ran, you do amazing work on your boat.
Thank you so much James! :)
Loved the 30 second snippet of the rivet replacement and your craftsmanship to make it ship shape again ...fair winds :)
Another superb video. I am learning so much about the places you visit. Dinner is on me if you reach New Zealand.
Your videos really are the discerning persons sailing/cruising videos.
We're happily saying yes to that invitation :) Thanks for watching!
I also love falafel lived in the middle East Israel for 10 years and had I every 2 days was and is the best food in thecworld
Sorry to see the eps when u hurt ur foot I felt for you but ur a brave woman love ur vids
I think this video is one of my favorites in your series because of the shot of the Sendall Tunnel. I so remember going thru it myself one day. I also remember how in the afternoon when all the kids get out of school how each school had their own colorful uniforms and you can see across the island these groups of kids all walking back home after school lets out.
We agree with you! And all the kids were so polite! :)
The Swan was beautiful but the Ran looks alot more cozy. Thanks for sharing, it helps me get through this awful winter in Sweden. :-)
That's nice that you think so! We think she's cozy too :) Thanks for watching!
Your videos are great, informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work and enjoy your sailing. You are both inspirational :))
We're glad you enjoy them Finlay. Thank you so much! Cheers
Another fantastic chilled out video. Always look forward to your new installment. Keep up the good work my Swedish friends & glad to see your pinkie on the mend. Take care & safe sailing.

Jag har lärt mig mycket av dina videoklipp. Lugnt hav!
Jesteście supper !!!
I like your videos guys, I always follow them as they show me a thing couldn't do all of my life, I grew up in dictatorship regime in Libya just at beautiful Mediterranean sea, and all of the boats are very banned thing (no way to escape the military dictatorship). good luck for you friends :-))))
Amazing sailing shots on Privateer .....
Another great video guys. I enjoy following your adventures and particularly your boat work and repairs, good job. I also would like to see how Malins' toe is healing!
Thanks Tom! Malin's toe is healed now :)

Nice video.
Thanks for sharing another episode of your great trip.
Great video guys. Glad you got to get a few things sorted out and didn't end up with more trouble because of the leaks... Good to see your foot is getting better. Looking forward to the next one, till then cheers... ;-}
Thanks Shane :)
Sent you a rum punch. Enjoyed the video. Keep on healing!
Very appreciated Tim! :)
When you think over updating your Dinghi and have collected money, go for a Highfield 240 UL made of Alu. I have a Breehorn 37 Alu and the Highfield dinghi.
Thank you for the tips! :)
Another enjoyable video! Thanks for sharing and glad the toe is healing well.
Thank you Gary!
love your videos!!!! thanks
Another excellent Ep guys. Great work on the boat, look forward to the next Ep. keep safe. x
Thanks! :)
Sad that so much work is needed on RAN. But I guess that's what goes with an older boat. It's ok though, because the fun and beauty of what you're doing, makes it worth it....Thank u for letting us tag along with you...
You take such great care of you boat.
Thanks a lot Tim! We would like to do more things to improve her :)
If you two make it up to Boston, we would be happy to show you around. I was heavily involved with the Volvo Ocean Race when it came up to Boston a few years back. It is a great city with lots to see. Cheers!
Cool! Thanks for the invitation! :)
Getting those plugs out of your deck looks like it was a pain! Good job on replacing them, it looks beautiful. And poor shabby....I think it's almost time to send him out on an iceberg.
It is a pain and there's some 3000 more of them! Haha! So doing the whole deck will take a looong time :) Shabby is not a very lucky guy, we'll see how long he will last. Take care guys and keep up the good work with your alu girl :)
She's getting closer.....and may actually see water next month! :)
Yeah, so cool!
I had the same toe injury in Antigua when I was 13 and I got gangrene in the toe ! I thought I might lose the tip of my toe but antibiotics saved it by it remained deformed for ever
Crutches are such a drag. Been there, done that. Grrrr.
Would be good if you showed how the windvane worked! After you've fixed the leak of course. Great Vlog btw
I see you guys are sailing up north. Maybe we can get together one day? We are in Saint Martin now and are heading south ;)
Yes, maybe we see you somewhere on the way! :)
sounds like yall are having bad luck. hope u get the leak fixed
A bit of bad luck, yes :) The leak is now fixed!
Sailing JAEKA and RAN Sailing ....UNITE ! That would be nice and will improve your Followers ! Great Video as always !
Rum on Ran ! :) i didnt get what the problem with the boat was !!
thumbs up
Of all the well-loved seasonal spices, nutmeg stands out for its long and slightly twisted history. In the Middle Ages, it was used to end unwanted pregnancies. More recently, desperate prisoners embraced it as a rather miserable drug substitute. So, on occasion, have teenagers, some of whom wound up at poison control centers. A couple of years ago, a man in Sweden claimed that nutmeg had induced him to spit at strangers on the street.
And get well soon
What do we want!............ Save Shabby!.........When do we want it....... now!
Pickles on falafel? Learn something everyday. :-) Another great video! Cheers from Oregon.
Delicious! :)
There are probably regional differences. At my work we have a woman from Egypt who makes falafel for the staff sometimes. She always has both pickles and tomatoes and a homemade sauce to go with the falafel. It's delicious!
Cool video… Just wondering about the teak deck, is it too hot to walk on down there in the hot heat… Looks like you fixed your dinghy… Peace and love Captain Rob Florida USA
The teak deck can get pretty hot! Cheers
nice vlog as always thanks for sharing
did i miss about your foot/ toe on how long you will need to stay off of it? like how long to use those crutches, i broke my ankle once playing basketball was 6 weeks no fun on those things i was in snow/ ice winter time least your in a beautiful place
stay safe, have fun while your young b/c life is short , i swear last year i was 26 now i'm 56 ouch time really does fly when your having fun
Thank you! I walked with crutches for a couple of weeks but now the toe is healed. Thanks for watching!
if it looks a little on the pink side it's PVC..I use hh66 glue it works as long as gas don't get on it.pvc is junk .On the good tender I had use blue jeans and 5200 permanent or temporary..sand prep wipe with alcohol put blue coat jean patch on one side with silicone or whatever sealant put on Saran Wrap coat the other side to it soaked works underwater 5200 pill and stick work out air or water done deal
Thanks for reminding me that no teak decks for me. As usual thank you for the great videos. You are a very caring persons to each other and it is great to watch you both having fun. By the way, your videos are so much classier than some of those other competitors videos that show just a bit too much sexy stuff (not that some is ok, just not too much). You do it with class. Just saying.
Thank you Jean! :)
RAN Sailing welcome. It always a pleasure.
Hi Guys , great vlog as always, did you say RAN was 30 years old ?
Yes, from 1987!
The dot on top of the "i", might be translated in English as the cherry on top of the cake :)
Oh, and although "stranded" is normally used to describe being stuck on terrra firma, like on an island, I think you CAN also be stranded on your boat.
Cool, now we know! :)
Be very careful with Grenadian rum it's potent :D
Shabby needed a refit!
Large yachts with big horns are a no-no
nice
can you fly a kite off ships? if so that would be cool footage ;) (not in thunderstorms though please)
Now I cant wait to see what causes the Heavy leakage... Do you really get all that water in by the anchor? What about your sump pumps? Not working?I like to know more about customs. Some people said that some of the WI countries will charge you custom fees on bringing in things like beer and other alcohol even though it is for personal consumption. Is that true?Happy Malins toe is getting better. Watch out for the hatches.......Hälsningar från Falköping,/Magnus
I think Yoga has helped you in balance, strength, and mobility with your injury.
Malin you are supposed to use the crutch, or cane on the side opposite of your injury. that gives you support and balance when walking and stepping off. Glad that you're OK.
I noticed that also, reminded me of when I recovered from a knee injury and being taught/told to use the single crutch on the good side (even if it seems counter intuitive). It allows you to lean opposite the injury side.
I love one legged pretty girls. They are very easy to catch.
Finns en svensk kvinna som driver restaurang/bar I Tyrell bay på Carriacou, hälsa från mig!
Det ska vi göra! :)
In my culture, breaking your toe means you will have very good luck for one year!
Oh, that's great! :)
Loves me some falafel. 😊
Hey ,,,I very surprised you didn't hook up with "Rick" !
Minute 5:00 ~ If that's what you call being stuck...
Nutmeg is the best on Rum Punch
It is! :)
Ugh, so many videos of people in the Caribbean. Show us the east coast of South America.
Those crutches you are using are damaging and not used these days your arm pit takes your body weight and damages nerves, just so you know x
I know but that's what they had in the Hospital in Bequia. They are really old school and the kind they used like in the 70's. We wrapped them in soft foam to make them a bit more comfortable and I was happy not being forced to jump on one foot for weeks :) Thanks for watching! /Malin
