I miss him very much. Always a gentleman. Every note counted with Larry. A humble man, and in my opinion, the best jazz artist Philly has ever had. He left a legacy of music for all up and coming jazz artists. Thanks for sharing your life with us Larry! We love you.
Musicians today think it’s about speed. How many patterns and phrases you can play in a minute. Wrong it’s about making that horn touch the hearts and souls of people. It doesn’t matter how fast you play but how many people you can touch. When you can touch the soul of a person they will listen to you play and come and see you play. So you can give them that feeling. When you can do that it’s greatness.
Tears...and smiling. Oh the sound of that horn. Heaven is that much more melodious with you there Larry. Back here, you'll live on through these recordings. God bless you and thank you for everything you played as a musician and lived as a human.
? I am 74 now. I played tenor for many years and then like a dummy stopped about 25 years ago. Listening to this guy has made me think about buying a sax and starting play again. This is what a tenor should sound like. I hear so much Zoot Sims in this guy's sound.
Iam 83 and completely switched from trumpet to Tenor sax a couple of years ago. Fingers getting a bit slow. I don’t care. It’s fun and there are many many beautiful ballads.
You're absolutely right! Tenors are commonly played in a higher pitched tone, and though it has its charms. This is the most beautiful tone it is able to make. I think it defines the early 20th century.
Larry is amazing! A moving performance. I love what he said about his band at the end. Words like that from a guy like him honestly makes your life. Makes you feel worthy and capable. I play this music and when a great musician even says he's comfortable playing with you,you know you're doing alright. It makes all the hours practicing worth it. It's about the most generous thing you could do for a musician that maybe doesn't have the same notoriety as you. A seriously kind thing he did there. For all the bad days on the bandstand, words like his has a way of erasing them.
Absolutely beautiful....a balladeer supreme. Everything just comes together and works right when he plays. For us saxophonists that aspire to inspire, We can learn so much by listening to him. Mr. Mc Kenna is a master, and surrounds himself with sidemen that complement his wonderful style.
Well said. He wrings every emotion out of this beautiful masterpiece. The bittersweet memories this evokes reminds one of a lost love never to be forgotten
Thanks to share the vid , love to see Mr.Kenna play i’ll close my eyes with wide opened eyes....yet we can see that his sight is none of anything in the room .....it goes beyond...in process of creating and imagining tunes....
My mother and fathers favorite song, done masterfully.... they are both in Heaven now.... who knew this song would have a definition like this... love its expression.... Larry....thank you for the story-telling of heart...
The tone and phrasing are great. It's amazing that he can play this well at his age. Or maybe it's because he's this old that he can do it. If this wasn't the age of TH-cam, I wouldn't have known anything about this master. The Internet has many problems, but it also has this wonderful aspect.
I'm so glad You Tube sent me these L.M. posts Thanx Melissa I bet you sound great. I'm a 60 yr old Jazz pianist and composer who ended up in Europe in 98 and just stayed.☯️
So articulated, I can feel the every note your playing in my core. I been playing sax forc12 yrs maybe more and still a student of truly musicians like Mr. McKenna
Que som maravilhoso, da vontade de passar a noite inteirinha ouvindo. Isso sim é maravilhoso de ouvir. Música de excelente qualidade. Meus ouvidos agradecem.
What a beautiful sound. The tenor saxophone played with masterful skill, exactly as it should be played. I just wish that mine sounded half as good. What is the sax/mouthpiece/reed combination ? I realise that the most important component of that sound is the embouchure, but knowledge of the combo might get me part way there.
Thanks for your kind comments, and I'm glad you like the video! I asked Larry, and he uses a 2.5 reed, Otto Link Slant mouthpiece (maybe #6), and a Selmer Super Balanced Action 40,000 Series tenor saxophone from 1949. Good luck!
@@MelissaGilstrap thanks for sharing that. Sax players are curious about the instrument/set up. He has a great SOUND & when he plays you go "That's how I want to do it". His set up is similar to mine. It confirms that I'm on the right track. Thanks again.
no acrobatics chord scales and show off mentality ,, larry is a genius plays the old school like a wizard ,, him scotty hamilton harry allen should get more praise than most of the coltrane copy cats ,, thanks larry from the uk bless

Last of the great oldschool tenor platers. Never ever plays a wrong note and every phrase is melodic perfection.

The Master of the saxophone and a lovely gentleman. Larry should be famous. In my book his the best saxophonist in the world today.

Dear Brian , just do it. Acquire a sax. ( says a fellow 70+)

このスローテンポの、I'll close my eyesは、とても素晴らしいです。テナーサックス奏者の、これまでの人生が、楽曲の背後に潜められているような感動的な演奏です。Thank You !

Not an awkward note in the whole song. When I was Larry's student I was too busy to hear him play, and see what I missed? Wonderful.
Regrets too here. Ihad a chance a few years ago to get a lesson with Larry didn't take it....what type of things did he have you work on?
