Haven't heard Anarchy Reigns ost in a long time. There is no sense of momentum in this, it's just anime shit and while that can be fine, this style of movement also means there are no rules, sense, or stakes, people can literally do whatever so I'm not invested. The Kratos one was good. It wasn't a bunch of super moves chained together. It had pacing. Constant super moves overload the eyes and brain so nothing stands out. I think you can be practical AND flash.

The entire point of maplemation is to be as flashy as possible. The more anime your shit looks, the funner it is to watch.

Alexan No worries dude. I think maple is the art style not the anime moves. You can use the sprites anyway you want, so it's their choice and it's not a style of animation, that's more how it's made like 2D vs 3D are styles, canvas vs digital are styles, but it is a genre of fighting. I did mention the Kratos one being a bit different.

I never really understood how these kind of animations worked.

The game (Maplestory) already has sprites, which a certain website allows you to design your own character and use those sprites. The sprites are individual frames of a certain animation of the game. Using software like Adobe flash allows you to put the sprites together and recreate the animation. With time you'll be able to manipulate the sprites to fit the purposes you want them to. And if you are a seasoned veteran, you can go even further beyond that and completely design the sprite animations yourself in a pixel art software.

Each frame often has the same sprite just moved to a different spot, most of that is done with Keyframes, when you put something from keyframe one over to key frame 5 the frames inbetween should show the character moving between them. this alows some pretty good movement with the simple sprites fromMaplestory!
So you should see the same sprite here and there during this animation even with different characters, because it makes the animation process much easyer and quicker (with the exeption of kayas, that lunatic used new sprites every frame each frame from what it looks like O_O)

Script animation is not really my cup of tea... Not saying that it’s bad, there are some exceptions like in this collab and the whole of castle sync collab. Sometimes the animators will do way to many camera shakes that makes it impossible to actually see what is going on. Or they all use the same weapons and techniques like for instance all of them using a katana with a holster.
Script animation is not bad if it’s done well, but either way not my cup o’ tea.
