A Capital Regiment

Filmed in London in 1997, this documentary is about a special day in the life of the London Regiment, a unit of the British Army Reserve, when it was presented with a new Regimental Colour. This historical occasion features Military Bands, Pipes, Drums, Fifes and the reservists from the Queen's Regiment, The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, The London Scottish and The London Irish Rifles.

As a (former) member of the Toronto Scottish, I must say I'm sad to see our sister regiment folded into the Londons, but at the same time I am pleased and proud to see that they are as ready as ever. Carry On, Londons!

Sorry to see the Londons go. The London guards are not the same. London Irish and London Scottish have fine history’s in their own right. Shame we couldn’t follow the Canadian model and retain these fine regiments in the reserve

Opps not all Irish Regerments wore the saffron kilt the First Battalion the Prince of Wales Lenster Regerment first Canadian and the second Battalion wore the Lenster Green Tartan this can be seen in the 1921 photo of the then Prince Edward Prince of Wales at the Sargents mess in Colchester amoung the Sargents there is my Grandfarther

Thank you for your comment. You are correct about the The Leinster Regiment, however it was a southern Irish unit and disbanded in 1922, after the Irish Free State Act. The narrator used the words "favoured by all the Irish Regiments" in the present tense, thereby referring to the present day British Army. The old Leinster Regiment as well as all the other southern Irish units had a great history and its good to remember them.

My Grandfarther was English born in London like many Regerments the Lensters had a Recruting detachment in London where they took over a pub as its headquarters as the Landlord was an ex member who opend the bar its called the Lensters Arms ther Lensters originally the 100 foot amalgamated with the 109 in India who were the last Regerment of the Second Kings German Liegion who served in the Crimian war and were posted from there to India they may of had a few Scotsmen in them like the odd Englishman like my Grandfarther When I asked him why he joined them he said he wanted adventure and the first were due to go to India and that's where he wanted to go but the war had other Ideas for him . As you know Queen Victoria's passion for anything Scotish led to the British army adopting many scotish symbols and clothing from the Glengarry to the Tam o Shanta which both were worn by the Liensters there's had a dark blue pompom and patch behind the badge this was the colour of the 100 foots faceing and Regermental flag the bandsmen wore the Tam and kilt the others if in blue service dress but not on duty wore the Glangarry on duty they wore the field helmet also blue with brass chin strap and shield incorporating the three feathers when in working dress of the twentys they wore the karki field dress and cap like you see from 1912 and first world War era before that they wore as working dress a white canvas uniform simaler to what the navy would wear with a flannel shirt which was long enough to hang down to just above the knees this was used to form a lose Underclothing as underwear was not used or issued in those times socks and Jacob boots belt and a canvas pillbox cap finished it off . To go off camp you wore your blues with a Glangarry there home bse was at Birr Lienster where my Grandfarther joined them from London on 12 03 1907
