The Gravely service manual and Hydro-Gear literature gave an overview but not what I needed. Thank you very much for showing the “top port” or vent location. I have the same mower thankfully and was considering pumping the oil in with the pump provided in the kit. (Same one you bought). Thank goodness I found this. Great video. Once my warranty is over I’m not sure I’m spending so much to change the hydraulic fluids. 2 Rotary filters and 5 quarts synthetic 15/50 with more frequent changes than specified will be my plan. $100 give or take for the kit is borderline robbery. Thanks again my friend!
I felt compelled to make this video, from lack of information on this unit (so glade you found value in it ). Good news your now set for 400 hours ( just always take a peak at those reservoirs and make sure they have a little oil in em before mowing ). Properly maintained, this thing will last you a good long while ( or have great resale if you wanted to trade up latter down the road ). I know a few folks running em for hire in mowing operations. I will be installing a tow hitch on mine here this week and pulling a 1,000lb roller on my bumpy lawn. Take care James!
Great tutorial. I have an Apex 52 which is basically the same thing in orange.I’m glad I watched your vid before attempting this. I learned that the #1 thing is getting the vent plug out first.
I just got my zt hd back from the Gravely dealer for first transmission service. It cost me $240.00. I wish I had seen your video sooner. I could have did this myself and saved a pile of money.
Great video Tom. Changed oil in my 2019 ZTHD48 Hydro-Gears yesterday. All went well and my vent caps were not terribly hard to open, just a bit hard to get to. Good now for the next 400 hours!
@@tomvancil8213 Thanks Tom. I'm hoping this is the last mower I have to buy. I did a lot of research on the Gravely before I bought in 2019. It's built like a tank and is hardly challenged with my 1 acre yard. Neighbors have a variety of the competition and several have stopped and asked how I like it as they've disappointed with their brands.
Crazy that you're deck belt is hitting the transmission. I have the same mower but different color paint the apex I addressed the belt whipping problem to ariens.
Good morning sir, I 2016 Husqvarna PZT 60 with the 3400 transmissions. My unit has one expansion reservoir tank that share the overflow from both transmissions. The lower models like the MZT amd the MZ have individual lines to the reservoir tanks for each transmission. On my Pzt it similar to yours except my transmission share one big expansion reservoir tank. My connects to the top of each transmissionn and where your hose connects is my breather/refill nut when I change and then I siphon pump up the new oil till it reaches the top, then re-thread then fill up my expansion tanks, and do my purge procedure with both wheels off the ground forward backward motion 10-15 times then I crisscross the handlebars into a zero turn position 10 or 15 times each way then I give it a ride and then I jack up and repeat one more time, I was just wondering what product do you use to keep the bottom of your mower deck so clean!! do use a WD-40 nonstick lubricant or can you let me know exactly what you do use to keep it nice and shiny and clean!! I mainly pressure wash mine. but sometimes people say to spray some WD-40 under the deck so the grass doesn’t stick. I normally get a curved little metal pick and pick out all the crumbled up grass & grease that are buildup over the cuts and get stuck in the spindles vents and then just re-grease the three. What’s your opinion on that and what do you use? I’m cutting 6 1/2 acres up here. What do you cut with your machine? Thank you!!
I will use this as a guide, thank you. 1 question, my dealer told me that the hydro trans uses the same oil as the Kawasaki engine, is that something I need reconsider?
I could do this job if it wasn’t for my bad back. When it’s time (75 hours), more than likely I’m gonna take it to the dealer to have the hydros serviced.
how many hours were on your mower before you changed the hydraulic fluid? my ariens apex (same mower as yours) says every 400 hours in the owners manual. your mower looks way to clean to have 400 hrs. i haven't changed mine yet, i have 100 hours. manual also says use 15W-50 synthetic motor oil. (64 fl. ounces) per transaxle. does your manual say different?
Hello Don, my unit had 79.5 hours on when I performed the first transaxle fluid change. You might want to look a little closer at your owners manual, it should say your fist service is at 75 hours ( or very near that hour mark ). 400 hours is after this first service ( that first service is key, if your at 100 hours get her changed soon my friend ). As for what type of oil, I stuck with genuine Hydro Gear brand for both the fluid and filter, each unit took approx 2 qts each). The Apex is a great machine too, it’s basically the same DNA as the Gravely HD.
@@tomvancil8213 i checked my manual again and sure enough, you were right. just changed my hydraulic fluid today. thanks, you may have saved my transaxles.
Great job in explaining the process! You was a tremendous help! Thank you!
This video is excellent. Perfect guide for the Gravely HD. THANK YOU.
@@manashttu thank you for kind words. Glade you enjoyed it and if it helped you in anyway.
Awesome job sir! Your details were a huge help!

Great Job Tom was having trouble getting oil back in until I watched your video and mentioning the vent plug. Thanks
Real good content in your video here. It seems the ZT/HD is a heck of a popular mower. I just purchased one new this Summer to replace my 2003 152Z.
@@budm9982 they are built like a tank. I have about 235 hours of trouble free enjoyment thus far.

You got this Andy!
The Apex is a great machine made by the same company truth be told. Treat her well it should last you a good long time my friend 👍
Great video, you did an excellent job showing everything very clearly straightforward and to the point
Thank you for the kind words, glade you found it helpful.
Good job on the video, Tom. Going to do my first change this week and didn’t have a clue how! ZT HD52
Thanks John. Just take it slow and keep it clean you got this 👍
Thanks Tom, this is just what I was looking for. My HD has 80.1 hours and I'll be doing the change this weekend.
Take your time, it’s not overly complicated. Your saving yourself a handful of cash doing it yourself. You got this 👊

Thank you for your precise information. i think that the local lawn maintenance shop would be easier for me than doing it myself
Mark, it may be easier but it will cost you more time and money. It really is not that difficult if you can change the oil you can do this too!
Thanks!! Your video is exactly what i needed.
Thank you for this video Tom. Just today, I serviced my Hydro-Gears on my 2020 ZTHD60. 🙂👍

My vent caps were not terribly hard either, surprisingly little torque to break em free.
Maintain it well, should last you good long time 👍
