    I am really enjoying watching you build this wrecker. I worked for many years as a field mechanic for Weyhaeuser, Caterpillar, and various gold mines. Most of the time I was alone. Just like you, a person has to figure out how to do a job by your self. I am now retired and to entertain myself I built an old school water-pumper dune buggy with a T Bucket body. I also had issues with my oil filter. Ha Ha. I don't know if you monitor this 2 year old video, but I like the way that you think, and the way that you film it.

    Your videos are great! I enjoy them and cannot support you enough. You're HUMBLE. A sign of a true man. Society could use a few more of you. Thank you for everything you do. Seriously a true joy to watch. Cable has NOTHING on you

    Dnam man I wish I lived close enough to help because I know the feeling of doing something by yourself that would going quicker with help. With all the help you give other poeple I'm suprised poeple aren't lining up to help you . But them again no I'm not . You are a rare breed . Not many poeple enjoy helping others with no pay back or nothing in it for them. Just another reason you are so awesome !!!

    I like the greater-than-average amount of filming you're doing on this project. Most project videos on TH-cam make things look easy by showing vaguely described tasks for seconds at a distance. This really shows people what to expect if they try it.

    Ten "Likes" once you pointed out that you guys did plan on strengthening the frame !!! Awesome. I like that truss, too - I've never seen one like that on modern frames, and my last job was at a full fabrication truck shop (frame lengthening/shortening, aluminum and steel beds and dumb beds, etc.). Interesting.

    I like the longer length for these assembly videos. Once that frame is trussed up, might as well get some roofing rubber in a bucket and slather that baby in roofing tar and let it dry, no more rusty or weakened frame!

    what I found on header gaskets is put them on and tighten them even all around and start it up and let it run until good and hot and shut it off and let everything get cold. like over night. then tighten them all again and don't touch it again unless its cold. 2 times and I have had them last for years before they go to leaking, or better yet change the engine before they go to leaking. I blow a lot of SMC engines.

    These videos are great and show us what is involved.. I am a long-time follower from Melbourne Australia and just going back through some of your older videos and found these.... fantastic work seeing you are doing it mostly on your own and in your own workshop instead of at your work... Eric, I am just curious as to how Mara got her "seatcover" nickname, please...

    • @offroadrecoveryteam
      @offroadrecoveryteam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is old CB radio Trucker slang referring to some one in the passenger seat. Most often a good looking female. It just seemed appropriate.

    • @TimsBitsnPieces
      @TimsBitsnPieces ปีที่แล้ว

      @@offroadrecoveryteam It must be an American thing as I have been driving big rigs here in Australia since the mid '80s and we don't use that one .. we usually call them a YL=Young Lady, but nothing about them being in the passenger seat... Thanks for the reply.

    Isn't there supposed to be a thick paper covered metal gasket that goes at the top of the oil cooler housing between it and the block? The gasket has 2 holes in it for the Allen bolts. I think the gasket fills a gap between the oil cooler housing and the block.

    So, when is the A/C heater box going in?? ;p
    My CJ also has that, I they call it a "pinion snubber", too. I think it is to help keep the pinion out of the oil pan, or it could even be to help reduce wheel hop in reverse, not actually sure, though.

    • @offroadrecoveryteam
      @offroadrecoveryteam  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      l337pwnage Yes the old CJ's had them, I was just a little surprised, first time I saw one on a GM

    • @mikezla5128
      @mikezla5128 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      l337pwnage the reasons they have them there is to prevent the front pinion and axle from bottoming out on the frame and also to prevent the pinion from going to far out of angle and damaging the yoke and u-joints.

  • @Spearfisher1970
    @Spearfisher1970 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    13:54 & header gaskets: This brings up a question I have - why do headers have the single header flange across all the tubes instead of separating the flanges into three parts (end, the center two, and the other end)? If done in separate flanges the tubes could flex a little more for a better seal at each flange.

    • @offroadrecoveryteam
      @offroadrecoveryteam  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Spearfisher1970 I think to reduce the chance of the pipes warping and braking bolts, like some cast manifolds do. Or just easier to mass produce.

      Mr5point56 The TC is a 1500 RPM stall and a gas one for a 1 ton is a 1800 RPM stall, I was running one in the old wrecker from a 6.2 also, worked good for trail use. It bolts up to the large dia. flex plate using 3 out of the 6 bolt holes on the TC

    Being that it is just an offroad vehicle, Why not run the exhaust straight out the hood. Then you will have enough room to run what ever oil system you like.

    • @82f100swb
      @82f100swb 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Lol... People always tell me that too and complain my truck is too quiet. The last thing you want on a trail rig that you spend many hours in is loud exhaust that exits close to the cab, especially a recovery rig where being able to hear people talking is important. Through the hood exhaust is cool for the first 5 minutes, then it is loud, stinky and makes the rig unbearable to stay in for any amount of time.

      @wildnwheeling3042 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it's not a show truck I imagine or assume just my opinion , because if you paint the block then you want to paint frame and paint everything nice and before you know it you have a full on restoration lol and don't want to put the restored show truck in the mud and bang or scratch it all up you know? That's my opinion atleast but would be sweet if restored or painted everything up or whatever, wonder if he has any other cool builds

  • @madbrother5155

    +recoveryteam why did you use the pully pump and not the transfer case pump?

    • @offroadrecoveryteam
      @offroadrecoveryteam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mad Brother The t-case would drive the pump, that means that when using it while the truck is not in motion the trans news to be in gear and the t-case in neutral. then if I want to use the pump when moving down the trail at a low ground speed, the pump would only be driven no faster than the speed of the driveline.

    • @madbrother5155
      @madbrother5155 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the nature of the beast with a GoPro camera. GoPro can claim they design their mics for industry revolutionizing quality, but that's just never been true. From the original gen 1 to the Hero 4, GoPros always have really shitty audio quality.

  • @tommystearns165
    @tommystearns165 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't mean to make myself sound stupid but looking at your small block leads me to ask if they changed the design. I I have a 1976 chevy K10 4x4 that's said to have a 350 sbc but on my trucks engine, the waterpump is slightly to the drivers' side of the engine but I see the waterpump on yours is directly above the cam pulley. is it a difference in the model year or could my truck have a different size engine like a 383 maybe ? I bought the truck as is a few months ago as is and my buddy couldn't tell me much about it because he bought it from a towing auction as is

    • @offroadrecoveryteam
      @offroadrecoveryteam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tommy Stearns I don't remember any small block chevrolet, 305, 327, 350, 400, having a offset water pump, even when building a stroker 383, a factory water pump is often used. But there my be some aftermarket water pumps out there that are offset for clearance of some other aftermarket accessory. All of the first generation small block chevrolet engines regardless of cubic inch (except for the 400) look almost identical on the outside. And are very interchangeable even with internal parts. For example a 327 can be built using a 350 block with a 327 crank and rods, or a 383 stroker can be built using parts from a 400. So if your engine has ben rebuilt is would be difficult to determine it's CID from the outside, without knowledge of the components used.

    • @tommystearns165
      @tommystearns165 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +recoveryteam maybe it's an aftermarket part, idk but it's gonna need replaced because it rattles and another, the temp gauge isn't registering even though it maintains it's cool

      +recoveryteam btw, I love your wrecker. I followed the rebirth of it from the bad fay of the broken wrecker. Out of curiosity, what you gonna do with that other red wrecker?
