    A bird hitting the engine does not prevent deployment of landing gear. It also isn't a reason why this runway had a goddamn wall at the end of it.

    • @earthssatisfaction6878
      @earthssatisfaction6878 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +46

      that wall is like paper...
      the problem as the explosion
      the plane landed on its engines and belly, damaging them, creating sparks
      fuel got leaking and boom
      if there was not fuel or... if planes could detach the engines... this whould've not happen
      the landing was good, at some point, the plane whould've stopped
      the wall did nothing
      at worst... the plane whould've flipped over and some people whould've been hurt
      but... the explosion killed them all
      days ago, people crashed because russia shoot down another plane, the pilots used the fuel and tried to land... they crashed, bad and people survived
      because the explosion was not too big
      at the end of the day... the explosion killed everyone

Just today, the President of South Korea was supposed to appear in court for nearly imposing martial law in the country, and on the very same day, such a horrific disaster happened. Now, instead of going to court, he has a reason not to show up there-to address the nation with crocodile tears, pretending to sympathize with the grief of those who lost loved ones. For me as a former Aircraft Engineer, it is almost impossible that a landing gear does not jump out of its compartment. Landing gears are secured 3 to 4 times to come out, namely: hydraulic , electric , pneumatic (pressure cylinders) and with a hand-operated pump that is also hydraulic. Only when everything is done, a light (indicator) goes on that everything is OK.
    Now that I read this, it is a mystery to me how this could have happened.

    • @gc825

    • @Highland_Moo
      @Highland_Moo 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +14

      Possible that the pilots were unable to carry out the landing checklist and possibly neglected to lower the gear. Maybe they were so concerned with everything happening and when the engine caught fire they just forgot. Seems unlikely, but I can’t see why gear wouldn’t be lowered. Whatever happened, it’s very sad.

    Even if the bird strike caused the starboard engine to malfunction, the plane’s landing gear was retracted and that makes no sense. It can be manually lowered by the pilots so why wasn’t it? The pilots appeared to have lined the aircraft up with the runway but no flaps extended hence the speed. As for a concrete barrier at the end of the runway, I have no words 😭

      No hydraulics means no flaps. And if they were on final when the hydraulics failed, they would have had no time to manual lower the gear - that takes several minutes. Even a gravity drop takes a minute or so, if it works.
      Apparently the runway was unidirectional only and they were landing against the use direction. Simply put, planes were not supposed t land in the direction this plane did, so the wall was not improper. This is not a major airport, so it is possible they still had a restricted runway.

      Well, the bird strike seems to have induced a panic or a loss of control that meant they just came down ... out of control, breaking all the rules, at the airport. They seem to have the nose at a very good pitch up for the no landing gear landing, so it seems they had control enough for turning, flying straight and level, and pitching the nose up too. Why didn't they realise they were too far going to touch down too from the start of the runway, and going to fast even if they got the start of the runway, and that they didn't even have landing gear down , which requires the slowest ground speed, so why didn't they continue on straight forward, even if they were a glider, they could reach the sea, or a nice bit of field or empty road, and thus have a place to put down that was infinitely long, flat , uninhabited, unobstructed, water would be a good spot without landing gear, and so they could delay going down until their ground speed was ..safer....

    A normal aircraft has three separate hydraulic systems for redundancy, two from the engines and one from the back-up electric pump. And also, if the landing gear does not deploy by the move of a lever, it can be lowered manually. So, a bird strike alone is nearly impossible for downing an aircraft. I think this was a hydraulics failure because the flaps and slats were not down, the strange part is that the gravity gear extension can be used without hydraulics
    edit: I heard a birdstrike in one of the engines caused a hydraulics failure and toxic fumes started filling the cockpit so the pilot just wanted to get the plane down

    "Birds" is not a sufficient explanation for this accident. It is easy to imagine that a bird-strike might cause an engine failure/fire. But this aircraft landed safely with the wing flaps and landing gear retracted. That part is harder to understand. Due (apparently) to the high speed of landing without wing flaps the aircraft slid so far as to hit a concrete wall that should NEVER have been there. That was a violation of airport standards (ICAO)... Many things yet to discover. So sad. Condolences.

    One of the most sensible and detailed reporting in the media about this news.
    If that is the case, then it looks like the crew panicked and made mistakes thereby converting a manageable emergency into a disaster. Such aircraft are perfectly able to fly on one engine. Did they forget to configure the plane and deploy the landing gear the second time around because they thought they had done that but forgot they retracted it during the go-around? The footage shows the wings were not extended and speed breaks were not deployed in addition to landing gear not being deployed.

      That ratio varies wildly depending on the country and its aviation safety culture. SK has a poor record with a disproportionate number of major pilot error crashes relative to the amount of flights they have. Korean Air the main national flag carrier seems to be the only one there that has massively improved its safety and training culture. Last decade there was the Asiana crash on landing at San Francisco and in the 90s there were lots of major crashes there. Aviation safety has come a long way since the 90s which was the peak as far as fairly frequent airliner crashes worldwide including in the US.
