I agree with you when you say, "Everyone has THEIR thing." I think anytime the discussion is fashion, people too often choose to be judmental and dismiss it as simply materialistic instead of a mode of self-expression. I have a collection of currated wardrobe items because I've been collecting since my first real job. However, the money I spend on my wardrobe isn't anywhere near what the average person spends on monthly car payments because I make sure to drive a paid for car. They spend big on cars, but for me a car is to get me from point A to point B. I present myself through words, actions, and visuals, and fashion is my visual expression.

I’m applauding gen z. Fantastic mentality to support the sustainability, the environment and animals. We are all guilty of overconsumption and it will only slow if the masses support lowering consumption . This is the greatest trend gen z has come up with of all time. At this point we all have so many things, you can rewear clothes for decades before they are worn out. If we don’t support this trend, we will be living in a garbage dump in our lifetimes. Using what we already have is a great idea.

As an older gen z (26y), I have grown out of that era when watching makeup haul made me excited. Now it's simply that if I finish anything, I will go try and grab a new one. We are really bombarded with ads everywhere, and I basically unfollow influencers everywhere, knowing they are doing their job having a huge digital billboard of products.
I love pre-loved items. My last iPhone lasted 5 years. My laptop has been with me for 9 years. And it is just pretty satisfactory to live with those familiar babies I own. I am grateful.

Where I am from (south east asia), plastic waste or waste in general is in a really bad situation and for the rivers/ land. Having this underconsumption trend isn't a bad thing as it may help to 'slow down' the accumulation of waste...until someone develops a bacteria that can truly breakdown all plastic.

OK the underconsumption mode I would like to see in the USA is everyone eating their food before it gets moldy even if that means buying less food at a time and having to walk to the food stores more often. I'm invoking the buy less food at a time and taking more walks to the store aka the buylesscore.

As a GenXer, i want to thank GenZ for bringing back underconsumption. Let others waste their money. It's not that you can't ever buy something nice, but the walk-in closet fulls of expensive items are gross.

underconsumption cose is also just being working class lol. Have you heard of incluenceation? It's influencing and inflation combined, I think coined by a substack writer for the newsletter midiminalism. It's the idea that as influencers become more successful they have more money/higher value sponsorships and increase their consumption (both things in general and luxury items). As a millennial I've felt that race with influencers I've been watching since high school and feeling like I should buy XYZ luxury brand because I'm at that stage in life and also just mindlessly buying things that are good products but I don't NEED, and upon further reflection I don't even want. Great video and good on gen X for not getting sucked down the rabbit hole of overconsuption

Oh my goodness… me watching all of the TikTok clips you included like…. Ummm isn’t this normal?!?! lol!!!!! Leave it to GenZ to make a trend from everyday things 🤣 honestly more power to them 🙏🏼🙈🤣
At the heart of it, even though I sometimes get frustrated with the “sensational mindset” that goes into a lot of trends, it’s good hearted. At the end of the day I guess it’s still creating positive motion towards sustainability so I’m here for that 🙏🏼

I feel like I take trends more with a grain of salt, because I saw them all in their previous iterations 😅 a decade or two ago. Like the Miu Miu and Balenciaga worn in bag trend, that was around in 2005 ish with Miu Miu bags, Balenciaga city, the Chloe paddington etc. and here it is 20 years later! Maybe the trend is back because of the high cost of living impacting gen z.

Kim Kardashian cannot be used as an example.
Also Jerusha may be off TH-cam, but she is no minimalist or an under consumer.
Great video. The largest group of consumers are boomers, not millennials. As a boomer, now in my early 60’s we have been downsizing for a decade now. It is absolutely the best feeling. From the size of home, to what’s in the cupboards and closets.
So hard though, especially when you love beautiful things. ☺️
Didn’t know this was trending! Happy about it. Love the 20
year old with the skin products. She is right.

    • @MarysRoom

Thank you for watching! Kim's house is an example of that pristine minimalism-for-aesthetic that was trending during the height of Instagram. I would never say Jerusha is a minimalist or underconsumer, but there is a larger overall trend happening on youtube where many youtubers are stepping away from luxury content. I notice myself luxury unboxings don't gain the same level of views they did 2 years ago. Ohh interesting point about boomers being the largest group of consumers. Definitely must be freeing to downsize! Appreciate you watching❤️❤️❤️

Great and thoughtful video, Mary! ❤ I love that you said you will wear the same pair of sneakers over and over… I’m the same way and if I accumulate too many it feels odd to me. Also like the quote from Charli XCX because it reminds us that there is something to having a signature look, uniform type of dressing. I feel like it can make someone more memorable.

I've always love worn in looks. It just feels so warm and personal to know someone has truly lived in something. I don't even like to make my bed because it looks sterile to me, like a hotel room. I hope we stick to conscious consuming and only buy what we need and want and stop trying to fill our lives with consumer goods that don't make us happy just for a kick of dopamine.

I also dislike overconsumption, I find it being a problem in terms of constantly wanting to buy new cups and water bottles. I tend to stay off TikTok, unless I’m looking for something specific. I love the idea of underconsumption since having too much Material items for me makes me feel a lack of control in my life. I want to buy less, better quality, and use more.

Hi Mary, totally with you. I am all about freedom, uniqueness. Being your own, and not a follower… I don’t like all these agendas, - Do these, all fair mongering ( global warming …., ) just jumping hoops… I am all about what it feels right to me. And finding your own style, and comfort. You know, since I switched my style, and started focusing, on building my own unique closet, I do not watch those big influencer, - empty, pushing every brand videos… but I also against other side be minimalistic, … how about be yourself, be one or another, or somewhere in the middle, or on something else, …. I enjoy watching interesting, calm, stylish, giving me history, knowledge…, channels like yours, and Lela, and a few more. It’s just feels peaceful and genuine , to me.. And yes, if you like the row bags, that’s what you like, and you shouldn’t apologize for what you like. Have a blessed day🙏❤️

Hello dear how are you. Thank you for the clip. The subject refers to a culture that is not ours. I believe it is reflected to USA mostly and middle to Europe and China. (Asia is another story). I don’t believe in generalizations fashion or vibe. Do what makes you happy with conscience. Do not fall in debt no matter what. Try as hard as you can. That’s the only advice I have. Remember “time flow as a river and history repeats”. And I agree with luxury brands under four families is a kind of monopoly in a way. Lvhm, Gucci group richmond, etc conglomerate.

I have always considered you to be an under consumer. You study what you want , shop carefully and purchase things that wont be in a landfill in six months or even six years. Personally, I wouldnt drop 4-5 grand on the Margaux bag or a delicious cashmere coat, but I do appreciate them.

It's good to see Gen Z catch on to the sustainability movement that has been going on for decades. Let's just hope that this "trend" becomes integrated for good into a way of being for them as it has for previous generations. You can't just do it for the Gram, it has to be for real.
Mary, as a Millenial, I respect your love of coats & handbags.

I feel like Gen Z are getting most of their 'rebellious' looks from millenials youth/'99 and early 2000s looks, with below the hip baggy shorts, big Paris Hilton glasses, 1998 tamagotchi style keyrings, a bit of indie, a bit of kesha, - a few years ago I was in artschool and worn-in second-hand designer bags with big chunky key-chain accessories were a thing, so I dont attribute these trends as definitively GenZ looks- mor elike Gen Z borrowing from Millenial's teens and early clubbing days.

This idea because you enjoy something means you get to over indulge in it is irresponsible and self centered. I’d expect that attitude from a undeveloped brain. Overconsumption of anything isn’t your God giving right. Your enjoyment at the expense of the planet, human lives isn’t your right. We’re all co habitating this world and it’s necessary to be aware of that. Underconsumption as a core, minimalism etc.. is forgetting the real life harm we are doing to the planet is real.

Exactly. "Do whatever feels right to you" is the wrong ideological conclusion, it's time we finally start calling it out. Superficial aesthetic changes won't save us, looking more closely at our words might. The underconsumption trend should push us to further rethink our choices, not console ourselves because we are not spending as much as the next person.

TT'ers are almost glamorizing the struggle in way, or in the least making it a trend. Many of the behaviors they are promoting are largely the habits of those who *need* to make their things last. They're just rebranding it under the mindful spending/sustainable banner. It's interesting though, and as you mentioned, this is a pendulum swing the other way from maximalist/aspirational living likely fueled in part by the economy/COL issues.

“The world will be saved by beauty”. Trashy/grunge is just that…Trash. Can it be a trend? Of course anything can be. I noticed about 4 years ago beauty became whatever you wanted it to be. Please you younger generations don’t deny Beauty. And if you weren’t born with good looks and money, work it, own it, don’t down grade it because you don’t have it……..let’s get real that can be jealousy and or bitterness….i love good clothes…well made items, quality materials, items that enhance what I was given at birth. And it takes time to find one’s own style ……But please don’t downgrade Beauty…. as Dostoevsky said it’s our salvation. What I will say also is beauty is an inner quality…..the Soul is beauty and quite often is missed if your only looking at what a person is wearing….another thought provoking video Mary, Bravo.
