      Shaping a battlefield does not mean you keep control of it. Russia is getting blindside at each trench. That trench network south of Robotyne is already getting flank, negating its value for the defenders. Yes, this is ridiculous, but what can you expect? The US, UK and other NATO countries absolutely don't want to put their own boots on the ground or get involved head-on in the actual fighting (for good reasons) but still reasoned that they would be able to buy the palm of victory, like you buy potted plants at the supermarket, and place it in Ukraine's hands without dipping their own feet in the trenches and the flow of blood. It won't be remembered in the west, or not in the way you think- they'll simply create the narrative of the Russians holding on by throwing hundreds of thousands of soldiers to the "meat grinder". By how the west throw the "3 to 1" argument about defending being less costly than attacking at the time Russia was attacking Bahkmut, I would be very happy if now they start explaining that the 3 to 1 argument is obsolete in modern times with combined arms tactics and extensive use of artillery and long range weapon systems.

    Ukraine fans keep talking (and thinking) in terms of ground gained or lost, or who won the latest attack/counter-attack cycle when those concerns are not really relevant to what Russia's tactical objective is here. The whole point of defenses are to make the price of getting through them too high; so the enemy goes somewhere else, or commits a massive force (taking that massive force away from offensive operations elsewhere). That's it. So, the only way to understand who is "winning" the Battle of Robotyne is to know if the price Ukraine is paying for going forward is detrimental to their war plan, or expected and acceptable. Barring a complete rout by either side, like an encirclement of Ukraine or Russia scatters and runs to Azov, we have no idea. 10,000 troops and 200 vehicles may be the "price" AFU decided getting through this phase is worth. Maybe not; none of us knows as we are not present at Zelensky's war council meetings. Even if both sides are inflicting casualties on each other at the same rate, Russia wins no matter how far Ukraine gets. Ukraine's best NATO army is used up, while Russia easily replaces 40,000 casualties and their vehicles.

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yukipaw1702 That comparison by somebody posing as general Zaluzhny is just ludicrous on so many levels. Zaluzhny was taken out or damaged beyond repair, along with several other Ukr senior officers, around May 10 - his "appearances" since have been of the kind that are mostly easy to fake. No one has seen him since in a truly live situation where he met people who would not have been easily "briefed" and told to play along in advance (before May, he was generally eager to appear in public and talk directly to western journalists).

    The Russians constructed those defenses in a very specific way. Heavy fortifications on the west and south, virtually nothing on the east. That's not an oversight. The Ukrainians are obligingly moving the direction they are being funneled.
    I wouldn't say anything about the age of those soldiers. They are experienced and battle hardened. Look at what they have managed to do. So, you have soldiers who have been soldiers for 20 years or more against forcibly conscripted men who have 8 weeks of training or less.
    I am 61, a corrections nurse and a veteran. I can run circles around most nurses less than half my age. That's because I am conditioned to it and they are not. Maybe after they've been at it a decade or so.

    • @A.B.5KRVw
      @A.B.5KRVw ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Agreed. Those soldiers may lack the fitness and aggressiveness of young soldiers, so they may not be the best for an offensive operation. But they are more than enough for defensive tasks like this. Some went through the first or second Chechen war, some fought in Dagestan, Georgia, or the Syrian conflict. They are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Especially in this kind of situation. Actualy, a perfectly thoughtful and logical decision by Russian high command to use this guys on this part of the frontline.

He said they should have had shorad, air cover, deep strike capability, attack choppers, and cluster munitions months ago. He says give them rockets for deep strikes with cluster munitions. Most of these things they still don't have.
      Biden seems to have forgotten how many US personnel died in Vietnam due to direct Russian/USSR assistance with sams, technicians, trainers, jets, and other advanced or gen - 1 equipment. Russia delivered their stuff directly by plane and ship, not via a 3rd party transfer. A lot more Ukrainians and equipment would be around if they had been given HIMARS when they asked for it!
      Lastly, Petraeus said NATO itself could not deal with all those mines and defense in depth without air superiority , let alone without air cover. Russia has overlook, spotted artillery on a grid. For Ukraine, the airspace is pretty much not even contested! Ukraine lacks air shorrad and has no air cover. I still do not understand why Ukraine and the West talked about a spring offensive 8 - 9 months in advance instead of going for surprise and mis-direction like they did in the successful Fall offensive.
