  • I've picked up a Wyse Cx0 C10LE terminal, lets take a look around it and see what hardware is inside this tiny PC. After that, can it be persuaded to play nicely with Windows 98?

    I think it's a case of the chipset being designed to work with then-current OSs, therefore Windows XP and possibly 2000, and cut-down variants thereof. There doesn't seem to be an audio driver for Windows 98. I was wondering if there was a WDM driver for XP/2K that might work, since the idea of Windows Driver Model drivers was that writing for that got you both a 2K and 98 compatible driver.

      I have tried a driver that was supposed to be Windows 2000 compatible, but no luck with in. I'm not sure it was a fully legitimate driver, I only ever found one copy of it lurking in a dark corner of the internet. Having said that, for the use it gets, I haven't had any issues with the drivers on there, even though they are not the best ones.

    Great video! Looking into picking up one of these for some windows 98 gaming myself. What USB soundcard are you using for this?

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! No idea on the USB soundcard I'm afraid, it's a generic no name thing the seller included with the sale. There are no details on the device itself and Windows sees is as a generic USB Audio Device.

    try this it might work for you! what you do is take the drivers and go to Local C Drive and double click it and make a Folder called WYSE and in that folder put all the drivers there and use a program like WinRAR if they are in a zip file and extract it there then go to device Manager and click on each hardware and tell it to Update Diver and click the 2nd option browse and direct it to Computer, Local Disc C, Wyse, Drivers and chose the folder and it will scan it and most time it will install the Drivers its like forcing the drivers without trying to install it due to wrong operating or hardware restriction these Wyse are little bit weird and sometime is a bug or a written permission from Wyse or dell to reject the driver but my method usually works cause your not trying to install it your just letting it check for the INF folder and then it forces it to use them drivers...

    I think the hyperion pro 5.24a file is the right one. Mine installed fine. What i did though is to install the unofficial set of updates first (U98SESP3; about 100MB). After that, it installs fine. I also installed Everest 5.5 to find out what other devices i had. So the ethernet is the VIA VT6122 btw. It installs fine and i can access the pc from my other pcs on my network. The Wyse C10LE uses the VIA VX855 chipset btw. The VIA HD audio is the VT1702S. I haven't checked this yet (i think i may have it disabled in the bios as it's not detected, yet). For now i'm using your method of one of these cheap USB audio devices. For partitioning of my C90LE7 4Gb apacer device in this C10LE, i used partition magic 8 & for backups norton ghost 2003. For video i left the VBE miniport in place, as it works a treat. All works great.

      Thats some great into and tips in your post, thank you! I wonder if having the unofficial SP3 is the reason it worked due to one of the updates in it? Or maybe it is that specific driver version? Either way, I'm going to give it a try and mine and see how it goes.

    • @arrdee2276
      @arrdee2276 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RetroSuperhighway Thanks. Update on the audio. It was enabled in the bios, so it's simply not being detected. Some more research suggests that there are simply no HD audio drivers for win98 full stop. Sadly that seems to put that issue to bed, unless someone wants to write some code for it. Fortunately we have a solution though in that cheap USB device (note that the internal C10LE HD audio works great under WinXP on my second C10LE btw). Another thing: once you have U98SESP3 installed is that you can extend win98 its reach to include applications made for win2000 & XP by installing KernelEx (4.5.2 i think, from memory). Another nifty little piece of software for network activity in the system tray, similar to winXP, is lanlights (win98 freeware).

      Is there anything in particular you want to know about the install, I can check my old footage but I don't think I filmed much of it. If you search for Phils Computer Lab video on installing Windows98 from USB, that should detial it.

      Actually did you ever get the audio working?
      I’ve finally setup this thing up with an SD card running windows XP, and internal audio had been a nightmare!
      I can confirm that a generic no name usb sound card (that I bought from Kmart, Australia) definitely works.

    There is a simplier way to install Windows 98, and that's how I do it in any pc.
    Create a usb bootable with the "Windows 98 SE boot disk" (basically is an ms dos 7.1).
    Then from there, format the hard drive.
    Connect the hard drive to another PC, extract the W98 iso to a folder.
    Boot again from the usb ms dos, and install W98 from the folder, is easy.
    BTW: how the usb audio adapter worked without usb/chipset drivers???

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the tip! It might have been a little tricky for me in this case as I would have needed to find a 44pin IDE to 40pin IDE adaptor for the disk on module. But all the while I was doing it the way in the video, I was thinking 'There must be an easier way to do it than this!'
      Still no idea on how the USB soundcard just plugged in and worked. I would love if someone with more knowledge than me on how Win 98 handles USB and sound devices could shed some more light on it.

      @@RetroSuperhighway Hi, I found that Windows 98 supports generic USB audio class, which I think was really advanced for its time.
      Btw can you check if it's compatible with sound blaster games? Like ms dos games that requires sound blaster card.

    Did you ever get graphics driver working? I can’t find a Win98 driver for VX855. The VIA website only has XP drivers for the VX855.

    where did you find the original driver package ? I am looking for drivers and original windows image for a Cx0 C90LE (4GB Flash + 2 GB RAM version of your one) but WYSE site is not available now.

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Original drivers for this are still hosted on the VIA website, a google for 'VIA 4 in 1 Drivers' should find them. For the issues I have specifically with this machine, I used the built in Windows drivers for IDE and the VBE Miniport Drivers for graphics, again a google for them will turn up lots of results.

      @@travelthetropics6190 what you're referring to is the C90LE7. I have one too. The 7 indeed refers to embedded windows 7. I also have the (well "a", there's several versions of course) Wyse image you're looking for. It's a bit convoluted getting it back on the unit (using a USB stick), but i have done it. I gathered all this stuff ages ago, not sure if i would ever need it. Note that it's pretty useless unless you have a server running on your network for it to connect to. I have looked into getting access to the actual image too, as a means to potentially extract drivers (i'm waiting on some hardware to attempt that). For the C10LE though it looks like Dell/Wyse used their own file system (maybe Fluid?) and hence windows nor linux knows what it is and hence i can't get access. In terms of some older info one can go to Arch ive..... Do t.... Org..... (obvious enough right). Some downloads will still be available there, but you have to dig around a bit
