  • Hey guys! My apologies for not posting in almost a month, I've been really busy with schoolwork (IB program) and have been trying to get some cool projects together to show you.
    In this video I'm going to show you how I recycled some copper pipe to make some really cool copper rings with custom silver inlay.
    In the future some of the projects lined up are: wireless fireworks launcher, MacBook Air screen replacement, and DIY 2W blue laser for less than $50. I hope you're as excited as I am to get into these neat projects!
    As always, thanks for supporting my with your views and subscriptions and if you haven't already:
    Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE: goo.gl/WFgbYb
    Here is my Instructable on the project:

    Some good ideas but you can’t solder property. It should have been heated more with flux on the solder wire and permitted capillary action, not a big blob of solder on each side. Just practice it.

      Also, Hard solder is what you need for jewelry. Something like a silver based hard solder, quite inexpensive too. Comes in a roll or pre cut chunks.

    I've wanted to get into making jewelry but I've never done it before. I think this tutorial will help me on my way. Thanks!

    Good stuff. I really like the idea of the groves. Only things I can suggest is to look into polishing an finishing waxes and coats you can put on to give the ring to make it look nicer. Also, look up a few videos on how to solder properly. With a joint like that you shouldn't have to solder both sides separately. You should be able to apply the flux and control the heat such that the solder effectively gets sucked into the gap. You can also use much less solder that way and it makes for a stronger bond.

    So cool man! Get yourself a bench top lathe and mill! I had just finished air force machining training. I was able to make a few titanium rings with some fast boring and parting! Watching your video's is motivating me to learn basic electronics and so forth to be self sustaining in all aspects! Keep up the good work man, you're going places!

    what is your solder 60/40? nice video, you explained it nicely! you can put fingernail clear polish or clear lacquer to keep your finger from turning green. just spray the inside n outside n it will keep it nice for a long time, then u can do it again.

    • @BenBuildsDIY

      Randy Witcher For this I used silver bearing lead free because I didn't want Pb on my finger for long exposures. I usually use 63/37 though for normal work.

    I used to make rings from copper plumbing brass and copper.Which involved anealing. But then I realised it may have arsenic. eg 'arsenic brass'
    You would have to wear a respirator mask when soldering. To protect from arsenic fumes.

    • @BenBuildsDIY
      @BenBuildsDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no arsenic in my copper pipes- these are used for drinking water. If you live somewhere with arsenic in your copper pipes, I'd get out now haha.

  • @patrafferty3910
    @patrafferty3910 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bem appreciate the effort
    But watch a good video on basic jewelry making.
    The part were you were cutting apart the tube made every silversmith in America gringe
    As far as soldering it back
    The whole point of soldering is to get solder into the seam the big metal vice you were holding your ring in was sucking that out of the copper almost as fast as you were heating it next time try a pair of tweezers on a simple brick put a small peice of solder on top then heat from underneath this will suck the solder into the seam where you want it with a lot less clean up..
    Also if you buy some boric acid powder from the pharmacy mix a little with water this makes a great flux thats way easier to use
    And more precise than that sticky stuff you had.
    Good luck ..

    That blob looked like a heart my girlfriend thought that was awesome and thin resin helps prevent your finger from turning green.

  • @M00Nabove
    @M00Nabove 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    At roughly 7:00 the 'blob' looks like a little heart. :) BTW - I am a jewellery maker and I marvel at how you made the ring with just regular tools. Well done :)
    Also to stop the green marks on your hands (the oxidation) you could put a protective coat of paint on it. Not sure what it's called precisely but there are different brands.

    • @BenBuildsDIY
      @BenBuildsDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @spiritburners 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just use a damp cloth to take the heat out once the solder has pooled and solidified then apply a damp cloth to cool it, cooling it with ice after soldering it will fracture the joint long term, if i did that in plumbing it would leak. you must let the solder solidify first.

    Howdo you stop the ring from rusting

    • @BenBuildsDIY
      @BenBuildsDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Copper doesn't rust, it tarnishes. This does inevitably lead to green stains on your skin from the copper oxide. If you don't like it you can coat the inside of the ring in a thin layer of clear paint or even nail polish.

    • @earth2brooklyn195
      @earth2brooklyn195 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Renaissance wax will protect it and slow down tarnish.

    • @AC-fv7kt
      @AC-fv7kt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cornet_Tooter it doesn't stain your finger but some people may have an allergic reaction to it....and that leaves the skin looking tinted. Nickel is another one that people will react to...a higher rate of people are allergic to nickel than they are copper.

    • @sterlingstrand1432
      @sterlingstrand1432 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not an allergic reaction, it's the copper oxidizing with the oils of your skin. Nickel does the same because of its copper content.

    clear nail polish or lacquer on the inside of your ring will keep your skin from turning green, not really safe to have solder touching your skin.
