Hi I would like some advice please, I have a 2500 litre raised pond with 8 goldfish and 2 small koi, the pond has a canopy over it to keep 90% of it out of the sun. I am thinking of getting a box filter, I know the bigger the better but what is the minimum size pump and box filter you would recommend and any particular ones.Thank you.
Thank you for your VDO. I am trying to understand when you say filter size - does it mean the volume of water passing through the filter in 1 hour? I have a 28,000 liter pond which I am redoing for my ducks. What kind and size of filtration do you recommend? I am aiming for a natural pond. I want to use bentonite clay + geotextile to line and seal the pond to avoid water loss. I live in Thailand.
The filter size for instance of 10000 means with will manage a 10000 litre pond. But look in the small print on the box. Tbf natural pond like duck ponds are difficult to filter so to the sediment, so it usually looks after itself naturally
Hi love the videos! I have a 3,000 gallon koi pond with around 8 koi, i have a retro aerated bottom drain into a 50,000 litre pressure filter then return through a Bacterial shower with bhm in 3 tiers, I have never had any issues but people seem to hate pressure filters is there any reason to this? Or is it a case of if it’s not broken don’t fix it? Thanks
Hi Ryan, don’t go into a shop and tell them that they will try to sell you something. 100% if it is working keep going. Perhaps some people are just filter snobs and probably jealous that yours works bette than theirs. Keep up the good work mr banks!
It works well because it's not doing much all the hard work is being done buy your dedicated koi filtration the bakki shower the pressure filter is only really catching the muck/waste 👍
Sorry was that the 40k version? If so yes should be fine, we never advise to over feed etc to bulk up so if you look after them normally all will be good
@@thep0ndmannot sure if they will get looked after normally lol just starting out. Ya it’s the 40000 👍. I know it’s a lot of money but I do worry it’s like electric cars they say it can do a certain amount but realistically only does half. Thanks for your help. 👍
I built a DIY canister filter for my roughly 1000l pond but how do I calculate it's filter rating? The canister is 100l and my pump is a SOBO 7500 model.
its mainly on size, best bet would be to go into a pond shop and size it up compared to the other filters, dont forget to size up the uv wattage aswell
You forgot to mention koi ponds need dedicated koi filtration systems and a normal pond filter of any size will not cope ! I also like to half the stated figures on koi filters. I find £100 per 1000L of pond a good formula for just the filter not including the pump UV or skimmer line !
@@thep0ndman I would have suggested box filters and pressure filters are not adequate for koi ponds unless the pressure filter is a bead filter or the box is a screenmatic or multibay. If you want to keep a high koi stocking level your looking at £200 per 1,000 liters. You also want to pay attention to a filters max flow rate if you had a 20,000 liter pond and wanted to turn it over once an hour there are not a lot of filters that can handle 20,000 lph flow not even the Oase screenmatic 140,000 it only has a max flow rate of 17,500 so it's very important to look at flow rates !
The nice thing about keeping fish is that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Koi, goldfish, discus, clownfish, corals, inverts do not care how the water is filtered as long as the water quality is up to scratch. So lots of people do use box filters or pressure filters some make filters out of dustbins it really doesn't matter. Not sure about matching filters based on cost...??? What about when prices go up or other shops are more expensive lol. Yes flow rate is important, that is for another day. If a filter can filter a 20k pond doesn't mean you need a 20k lphr pump so not sure where you got that from. For vid purposes, If you had a 20k pond we would recommend an 80k filter min for koi. Cheers
@@thep0ndman I agree as long as the water quality is is good that's all that matters but some filters just do it better and some filters clean themselves some filters have a better price performance ratio and some filters don't tell you what they can or cannot filter like a bakki shower for instance it all depends on what media you put in the shower as they don't come with any some filters are simply dedicated koi filtration systems Nexus 320 or any RDF for instance.

I’ve got a 3200ltr pond going in and I’m thinking the oase 4000 screenmadic set for around 15 / 20 koi. Do you think that’s ok?

Just got an Oase Biosmart 14000 for a 3300L pond with goldfish and just 3 koi, the oase spec says 3500L for koi so should be ok?
Yes just don’t go mad with fish stock and feeding

Koi filtration is approx the 5min mark on vid. Cheers

I can never understand why pond equipment is so expensive for what they are ,even a uv there is nothing too them.
Agree not much too them and over priced. People pay though so I guess they take advantage
