  • After not visiting Hong Kong for years I don't really know what I expected, but definitely not this... At least I could spend more some time brushing up on my Cantonese.

      I don't REALLY know what this you-tube clip is about ( didn't watch the whole thing), but what I have noticed is your english-american accent (for being born and raised in HK....).
      Of course people are different (nobody is the same-otherwise according to some people they are boring). I honestly think as human being we should tolerate/cherrish the mankind and make no differences in what color people are: white, yellow, red, black etc. ...- who cares ??!!!!
      It doesn't matter (not sure to use this term).
      AT THE END WE ALL HUMAN BEING!!!!!

      David, if she was born in Hong Kong,speaks fluent Canto and has lived in the Orient her whole life, she's only a foreigner in the West. The racial bias people have in Hong Kong is unnerving sometimes;I say this as an expat who has lived in HK for 7 years. We wouldn't call a person who lived in America their whole life a 'foreigner' even if their parents were from Hong Kong. Of course it happens,but always in a negative discriminatory context. I know you are not trying to be discriminatory however,but it gets under my skin.

    Great video! I’m a white British guy who lived in Hong Kong during the 90’s, my wife is Hong Kong Chinese and my kids are mixed and I have been speaking Cantonese since the mid 90’s so I have been speaking it for around 30 years now (badly lol)
    I speak Cantonese with my wife 100% of the time and with my kids 50/50. Even to this day, it’s rare I see a westerner that speaks Cantonese, mandarin yeah pretty common, I have seen loads over the past 30 years but Cantonese just a handful, and that’s on TH-cam. In real life prob 3 times.
    So you must have that same ‘wow factor’ from a lot of people when they see you’re western? Then the explaining why you speak it etc, I don’t mind at all, in fact I find it pretty flattering! I am actually back in HK as I speak on holiday, and I bloody love this place and it’s culture/people!

    • @ukmonk
      @ukmonk 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@chasedownblocks1736 just gotta speak a lot, don’t be shy and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Ask what things are and make notes phonetically (unless you can write Chinese which I cannot ☺️) like I used to point to things and ask in Cantonese ‘what is this in Cantonese please?’ Then I would write it down what I think it sounds like in english. Watch movies with subtitles is also good but main thing is keep at it!! Practise, practise, practise and then some!!

      @@ukmonk Your advice was very helpful. It describes the personality traits which are my insecurities: 1) Shyness and 2) Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. These two alone are critical to success. The third pointer you brought up is to write down the words and phrases to what it sounds like in English. I’ve done that in the past and few times. I guess I didn’t say it as serious before. I would lose the notes and never see them again. And also, I never bothered repetition by saying the words over and over again. Through your advice, I was able to see the path to success is by overcoming personality intimidation.

Most times I can tell if they are not, but I could not hear any tinge of non-Chinese accent. Wow you are black and speak Japanese. But wow.... You are black and it's impressive that you speak a language since birth. But wow.. You are smart anyway because the blacks in Africa can't and you can. Language is learn from environment, not genetics. There are tons of white people who speak perfect accent free Cantonese, because they are born in hk. . Can find them on TH-cam. Sharon balcome. Carina chamberlain etc.... Comparing someone who was born in hong kong with an overseas born Asian blooded person and saying wow... The guy born in China who is white and who went to local Chinese school is so good, while the Chinese blooded American born kid who went to English school is dumb. Doesn't make sense. Cool, fluidic mandarin and Cantonese. If you can mix with Sichuan that would be more awesome 555. Anyway do you struggle when someone ask “what is this in Chinese”? I am kinda temporary stunted sometimes because I speak hokkien and when being requested to answer in Chinese I am spoiled with choices although my mandarin and Cantonese are very limited. 555 (hahaha)

    The fluency in Cantonese and mandarin, watching it come from a white face. The mind is having difficulty comprehending lol.
