After not visiting Hong Kong for years I don't really know what I expected, but definitely not this... At least I could spend more some time brushing up on my Cantonese.
I don't REALLY know what this you-tube clip is about ( didn't watch the whole thing), but what I have noticed is your english-american accent (for being born and raised in HK....). Of course people are different (nobody is the same-otherwise according to some people they are boring). I honestly think as human being we should tolerate/cherrish the mankind and make no differences in what color people are: white, yellow, red, black etc. ...- who cares ??!!!! It doesn't matter (not sure to use this term). AT THE END WE ALL HUMAN BEING!!!!!
David, if she was born in Hong Kong, speaks fluent Canto and has lived in the Orient her whole life, she's only a foreigner in the West. The racial bias people have in Hong Kong is unnerving sometimes;I say this as an expat who has lived in HK for 7 years. We wouldn't call a person who lived in America their whole life a 'foreigner' even if their parents were from Hong Kong. Of course it happens, but always in a negative discriminatory context. I know you are not trying to be discriminatory however, but it gets under my skin.
Wow Rachel, listening to you converting from American English, to Mandarine to Cantonese, my brain can't process that, you are amazing. You probably know, how hong kong people speak english, or even mandarin, they always have an accent, you on the other hand, 👏👏👏👏
Her boyfriend speaks all 3 languages with native ability. But yes, it's more impressive for a non-Cantonese person to speak Cantonese. However, you can tell right away the Rachel's Cantonese is not of native ability, but it's still very impressive.
This was amazing! Your Cantonese is perfect & English is also perfect! Idk Mandarin, but my mom says your Mandarin is spectacular. I was also born in HK, but brought up in the US. Wish I knew Mandarin, tried to take a class but it didn’t stick. Hope to see more videos like this from you!
I am American born Chinese with parents from Hong Kong , but my wife is from Hong Kong, so glad to watch videos like these especially from a fellow American, from NYC here……
"With every five Cantonese word you say, you gotta add one English..." 🤣 I never noticed that as I speak Canto at home but possibly add two English words instead of one, since I've grown up in Australia.
Cool, I'm a HKer based in the US and like you, was kept away from HK during the pandemic. We finally went back this year (shortly after your video, in fact) and although the trip was too short, I missed it so much and it felt so wholesome catching up with family and friends. Your Chinese is great. Hope to see more videos from your channel, cheers!

Oh my gosh! You speak Cantonese better than me, I’m am ABC who only speaks Cantonese at home with mum. We’re so used to westerners not understanding us that we are sometimes cheeky - we’d be floored if someone spoke back to us 😂
Great video! I’m a white British guy who lived in Hong Kong during the 90’s, my wife is Hong Kong Chinese and my kids are mixed and I have been speaking Cantonese since the mid 90’s so I have been speaking it for around 30 years now (badly lol) I speak Cantonese with my wife 100% of the time and with my kids 50/50. Even to this day, it’s rare I see a westerner that speaks Cantonese, mandarin yeah pretty common, I have seen loads over the past 30 years but Cantonese just a handful, and that’s on TH-cam. In real life prob 3 times. So you must have that same ‘wow factor’ from a lot of people when they see you’re western? Then the explaining why you speak it etc, I don’t mind at all, in fact I find it pretty flattering! I am actually back in HK as I speak on holiday, and I bloody love this place and it’s culture/people!
That’s very encouraging to hear. My mother’s tongue is Canto, and being born and raised in America, I’m only around 30% fluent. What is your advice to improve fluency?
@@chasedownblocks1736 just gotta speak a lot, don’t be shy and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Your Mandarin and Cantonese are superbly fluent. You sound just like a native speaker. (That's a compliment). Most times I can tell if they are not, but I could not hear any tinge of non-Chinese accent. Cantonese is also very difficult to get right even for a native Chinese who does not know the dialect, because it has more intonations compared to Mandarin.
I almost couldn't tell that you are Caucasian from the way you speak....almost like a native Hongkonger. Excellent Mandarin too. Love your channel and the videos. Haven't been to Hongkong for a long long time, ever since Covid. Love to go visit there some time.
