How the U.S. Government Is Organized
The Constitution of the United States divides the federal government into three branches to make sure no individual or group will have too much power:
Legislative-Makes laws (Congress, comprised of the House of Representatives and Senate)
Executive-Carries out laws (president, vice president, Cabinet, most federal agencies)
Judicial-Evaluates laws (Supreme Court and other courts)
Each branch of government can change acts of the other branches:
The president can veto legislation created by Congress and nominates heads of federal agencies.
Congress confirms or rejects the president's nominees and can remove the president from office in exceptional circumstances.
The Justices of the Supreme Court, who can overturn unconstitutional laws, are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

      Fun Facts!
      All Presidents have been male.
Most Presidents have had a college education
All but one President has been Protestant Christians
Although not a state, the District of Columbia has three electoral votes
At first, the Constitution did not limit to terms. When George Washington refused a third term, none of the Presidents had more than two until President Franklin D. Roosevelt ran three. People began to become concerned that he had too much power, so in 1951, the 22nd amendment limited every President to two terms
Congress has declared war five times
Presidents have ent troops into action more than 150 times!
Regulatory Commissions, unlike other independent agencies, do not report to the President
President names heads to leaders of the independent agencies, and only Congress may remove them
About 90% of those who work in the federal government are civil service workers and they have their jobs for life. These workers might be lawyers, clerks, or park rangers. They are hired through the civil service system which is a practice of hiring government workers on the basis of open competitive examinations and proven ability
