This is the best video I've seen on how to replace the inserts. You take it all the way down to the original gluing surface which most other videos don't do. Also nice tips on popping some little pieces out and explaining the tabs on the bottom to make it easier.
I watched this how to video, and just finished installing my American Muscle door inserts. This video was a huge help, and was spot on. As to the other comments, I can assure you that you would not want a perfect fit. The glue would not allow you to put it down exactly as it should. As for the screw driver, you really do need to use on on the initial placing. I used a plastic card to finish it. I also though that just putting new glue down would work, but it pulled away again in a matter of weeks. Thanks Evan for the help !!
I was thinking the same thing. I have noticed this on several of these videos? Maybe a black silicone or something the " clean" up the edges?? I dont know
Or you can just do what I did. Remove the old material, clean all of the left over glue off, sand it smooth and fill in the little holes. Then paint it with either a tinted or black roll on bed liner. Or a good quality paint for plastic. Never have to worry with it again.
I have actually bought 2 kits, the first from LMR -> which is hard plastic with similar fit issues as described in these comments, but much more difficult to work with as far as fixing the fit. These did not fit my 2008 Mustang GT right out of the box, they will need a little bit of modification prior to installing. I am currently in that stage of the process, to make sure they will fit after the adhesive is applied. This video is somewhat helpful, but would be more helpful if they included tips like "hey these things are not going to fit right out of the box, here's what we did to prep them before applying the adhesive"... I do feel that these American Muscle Italian Leather inserts are superior to the originals other than the fact that I have to install them... which is stressful, but manageable. If it takes me 8 hrs of work to install them, but they last for 20 years, they definitely look better and feel better than the originals, so it is worth the laborious task of being meticulous to get them to fit properly before applying the adhesive.
Only one I see removing the backing plate, if you dont its just a matter of time that it falls off again. You get down to the plastic and it stays put forever. Also lets you tuck things in neater.
@ 6:50 it looks like there is a big slice in the panel on the edge. What am I looking at? Did y'all make a mistake or did you have to cut it to make the corner of the material lay right?
Awesome 👏 video job well done 👍🏻 but I would rather pay a professional like yourself to do this job, these panels aren’t cheap I would really hate myself if I screwed them up.again, thanks for the great video.
This kit is a waste of money, the fitment and quality is beyond awful. You are best cleaning up your old leather insert and door panel. Then simply respray and glue it back on.
@@manuelgarcia5175 mine is falling off right now as I speak,,i tried the adhesive spray to hold it but it just keeps coming back off,,im probably going to have to bring it to a shop and have them do it,,plus I am also looking at changing the design of it if I can.
Nope! The last owner of my '06 paid to have the panels re-glued by a good local trim shop a fews years back, and the edges on one panel are coming loose again. They used the same 3M spray. Considering how much these insets cost, and considering that the likelihood of an amateur looking finished product is very high, I'm going to re-glue the edges on mine with Weldwood Contact cement and say a prayer. Weldwood grip is legendary.
@@sirthom3275 not done yet. Waaaaay too humid to do now. My experience with Weldwood contact cement has always been good. I used it to adhere Tolex to speaker cabinets and guitar cases. Never a single failure. I'll post my results on the car a.s.a.p..
@@chefboyder9322 Okay, I did the repair and the result was very good, BUT, the fabric has shrunk over time and it still wants to pull away. It really is staying adhered since I used the Weldwood but it was impossible to get all the edges completely tucked into the edge recess in two places.
yeah that is what I was thinking of doing and maybe because I live in the northeast with the summer and winter I wouldn't hold up for very long,,,either way my drivers side is flapping off a bit and its annoying as hell..i have to get this fixed and I am probably going to bring it to a local shop here because I would like to change the look of it anyway
All this just to replace the insert, they just dont make things easy to do these days. I might just sand mine down real smooth and paint it black lmao.
Thay looked like a mess, and I could still see glue on the edge at the end not to mention it wasn't even cut correctly, I mean cmon that was hilarious. And why not just paint it after you've sanded it? My goodness

mine keeps pulling away also after using spray adhesive and its getting very annoying,,plus I want to change the look of my door skins anyway
RIGHT, THIS LOOKS REALLY SIMPLE YOU CAN DO IT RIGHT AT HOME, I WANT WHAT HE'S SMOKING
Uhhh you can do it at home with basic tools and tape. You have to be mentally challenged if you can't do this after watching the tutorial
How about that damaged edge where the leather meets the plastic? That's an eyesore!
I was thinking the same thing. I have noticed this on several of these videos? Maybe a black silicone or something the " clean" up the edges?? I dont know
I think Ford should fix em under warranty along with countless other issues that my 06' has.
Ford should fix your 14 year old car... under warranty?! LMFAO Good luck with low rent.
Use plastic pry tools on plastic interior parts!

Heat gun helps a lot
Thank you for this great video! Amazing job!
It's harder to swap out a door panel than to swap out the engine.
Predator mustang Inc. has beautiful door panel inserts that are much easier to install .
I watched the installation video on TH-cam for the Predator inserts, they look pretty good.
This video is perfect! The video on AM was a joke. Thanks so much!
Find you local upholstery shop and have them handle it plus they have a million styles and colors to choose from

omg I need a man to do this 😩 and I teach trucking. I'd never in a million years get it back together
I have to do all this to fix stupid door panel 😩
good video but seriously need to invest in plastic trim tools. this whole vid i just felt something was gona tear or break with that flat head
Or... you can buy the Coverlay door panel insert and glue it in.
Looks like a nightmare. Take your door panels off and take them to a trim shop.
FOR REAL!

8:33 Why does the door panels curved edge look so frayed here?... I think you went to close to the edge with the wire-wheel and fudged it up alil
screwdriver seriously? Or how to damage door panel ...you should have a use a plastic card
Looks way beyond my skill level 😉. In 2022, what's the going labor rate $$$$ to pay a shop to do this?
I went to my auto upolstry shop and paid him 300 to redo both doors. This would take all day to do both doors.
I hate dealing with glue !

+1
SG unfortunately I've tried that several times and it still keeps falling off.
Remove the adhesive as shown, but only where necessary, then use a much stronger one on the clean surfaces of both the leather and the panel.

Why even take the entire door off?????

@@archiguitarchi I wound up buying replacement inserts from ebay and had them installed at local shop.

Coverlay ABS door panels are best.
What a fucking nightmare.
Coverlay is so much easier
dude the edges looked like crap, has a white flakey look around it, no thanks.
Let’s have a shot every time he says basically or liberal.
Why not use crazy glue or gorilla glue?

Better off having someone stitch together some leather
that shit wont last a year
Thanks! Nope.
