One good tip I was given for our deep freezer - always store ALL blue ice/reusable ice packs in there, along with at least one 90% full frozen gallon jug of water. If you don't open your freezer in a power outage, those things will help keep the temp cool in your freezer longer. We had our power out for about a day and left our freezer shut, and nothing came even close to thawing even a little bit! Big freezers that seal well essentially act as a very large cooler, so if you have enough "stay cool" items in there, you are more likely to keep everything fully frozen!
We do he same thing! We live on the Gulf of Mexico and every year as we head into hurricane season we start to fill all of the “empty” little spaces in our freezers with milk jugs and coke bottles full of water. They help keep your freezer frozen and in the event you loose water (if you be sure to clean your jugs) you also have clean drinking water. Before a storm hits we fill all of the tubs and sinks as well. We can then use the water to flush the toilets after a hurricane....
My thought is to take up any empty space in the freezer with water bottles. It keeps your freezer cool in a power outage and gives you water for emergencies.

Hi Jordan, love you guys, hey I want to share 2 things with you. we do a stock up every year starting in September until Dec 1, and we call it our Winter Pantry, and this is where I carry the big things in that I don't have to carry in during ice and snow..big things of toiler paper all gallon containers, soap, vinegar, etc. and the second thing is....Every January we play...Survivor Pantry Island....where we buy nothing...nothing...except, meds, and pet needs and personal care items. And we do this to 1. Save money after Christmas, and to clean out cabinets, pantry and freezers so spring cleaning is easy peasy cause its empty space. And since we bought the food, we have never eaten anything weird. just wanted to share, and btw, I invite all my FB friends to play along and share photos of their meals, along with keeping receipts and confessing on what they spend for the month. That's impressive. We are a family of 7 with two cats and a dog as well as one on the way. My budgets more like 300 plus a week. Now that includes cleaning supplies diapers going out to eat but I do wish I could get it a little bit lower

My husband lost his job (he was the money maker) right after having our baby then we abruptly had to move from a beautiful 3 bedroom home to welllll we didn't have anywhere planned to go and nothing really saved... So we really buckled down and it changed our lives! Of course if something like what happened to us doesn't happen to someone then you don't make changes as fast bc your not in a rush. BUT! Just start looking at everything you have that you are spending extra on and take it out of your life! Like look at cable, your nimo bill maybe cell bill can be looked at and adjusted there's so many things you don't think of that you are spending money on! Good luck you got this!
15:50 starts talking about costco. I shop for small stuff at Trader Joe's and buy the stuff we eat frequently at Costco. For instance, frozen organic blue berries at 6.99 a gallon at Costco vs 10 ounces for $3.99 at Trader Joe's. So if you know what you use the most, get it at Costco. With that said, if you aren't going to eat a giant bag of carrots buy the smaller pack at Trader Joe's because they will go bad unless you use them in your smoothies or for stew, then freeze them.

Here in Australia, our material and food items are more expensive, due to low population less consumers. However, we recently got the big American chain store of Costco here in Melbourne about -5-6 years ago, and its made shopping so helpful economically for a lot of families. Bulk buying is a very new concept in this country. The things that is helpful for us is catalogs, we still get catalog specials stuffed in our mailbox, from various suppermarkets and it shows the specials, so people tend to buy off catalogs, for some this limits their impulse buying at the stores and helps keep track of their budgets. For me when I shop for my meats once a month, I buy 2-3 kg of meat and then portion size them, for a house hold of 4 people I divide chicken wings,and drumlets of 15 or 20 pieces per bag thats enough for one meal and meats 10-12 pieces per bag, I mark the bags of the type of meat and date them, so I know which to use first. With sea food I shop twice a month for fish and other I only buy a small amount coz we dont like to eat seafood thats been freezed for too long. As for cleaning products, I am allergic to chemicals, so I tend to use household natural products, like vinegar, salt, bi-carbonate, lemons,and peppermint, tea tree, citronela, oils and for cleaning hard surfaces like floors a steamer. As for energy we have solar for our electricity and hotwater. Here in Australia if you have solar and you dont use up all the energy, we can sell, it back to the electrical company or if I have a neighbour or someone that lives in an apartment renting and cannot or does not have solar but want to pay less for electricity I can sell it to them for a lesser price.
I know I’m late to the party (I’m binge watching!), but I live in a very small home and it takes creativity, but space can always be prioritised. I had a corner in my laundry which hubby built a floor to ceiling cupboard because our pantry was only 2 small overhead cabinets. We cleared out our linen cupboards and got two free shelves.
I'm glad you talked about back-up power! As a Florida girl, I almost lost all my fridge/freezer food after Irma. I would love to get a generator. I hadn't thought of checking Costco for them! I stoctobered in September. We had 20+ tornados here in Dayton Ohio on Memorial Day. Very important to have things like soup, prepared sauces, pasta, etc. I had refrigerated fresh food only that went bad after 4 days of no power. So now, I am stocking up primarily for such an emergency. Thank you for your info!
Hey! I’m a new subscriber!!! I’m so excited! I kno I’m super duper late to the comments lol but I just have to say our hometown here in Florida took a DIRECT hit from hurricane Michael last year. Because we do stock up on vegetables during the summer ( we grow our own) and we also deer hunt and fish every chance we get and on top of buying things on sale, my family was able to survive for a little more than a month without buying anything from the store. ( no electricity, trees in the road, weren’t able to travel, grocery stores were damaged and closed) We were also able to bless family, friends, and neighbors with what we had already stocked up on. It was hard on everyone, but we were super duper blessed. We also kinda stock up on propane and gasoline right before hurricane season.
Lots of great tips. I'm curious, who here is eating gluten free, sugar free, paleo-ish lifestyle AND doing it super cheap, because, We HAVE to, our health demands it!! When Jordan said they ate lots of pasta, I was like, Nope... aint happenin for me.... it cannot!! Also cant eat alot of other starches like potatoes and even non gluten grains... my family can, but not me, barely any. I think it's cool that Jordan and hubby did/do/are able, but she/they are also apparently very blessed to still be healthy, thin, energetic AND fertile while eating cheap, filling starches. That's great. But ain't my reality! So.... what tips and ideas do y'all have!?!? 😊 P.S. I love so much of what Jordan says, and I already do alot of it, my freezers and shelves are organized, I garden and preserve alot of our own, meal plan around what we have/needs used, stock up with sales, etc. I can make things stretch far, and put off grocery shopping for weeks. But eventually my husband 'makes' me go shopping so he has more food to pack his lunch.... he likes, and needs to have easy to eat foods in his lunch, like (gluten free) bread, lunchmeat or peanut butter (and homemade jam), crackers, cheese, fresh snackable veggies and fruit, and I usually have some type of cookie or bar in the freezer that I have already put in baggies ready for him to take. So while I think i am doing alot of Jordan's tips already, it still seems like I spend so much on groceries!

I love the envelope system it’s a great idea. Also the shopping budget, I’m in UK and $100 for family of 4 a week works out at £72 approx and it can be done if you shop around and be a savvy shopper.
I'm one of those that stores food under beds, coffeetables, corners of rooms. I can our produce and so those jars fit well under things. Then with things that I put in rotation storage and buy in bulk, I put it in gallon ziplocs and ask Sam's Club's bakeries for their icing containers and put them in there then label with a sharpie.
Spanish person here :) You inspired me to do 100€ per week (we are two adults) but those 100€ are for EVERYTHING except bills and debt (groceries, car, fun time...). Now we can save for future events (like have kids or house renovation). THANKYOU!
If you have a power outage contact your insurance company they might refund you for your lost food. In my situation USAA refunded our lost food in our fridge. Such a blessing.
I'm watching this video way late but if you have a top loader washer you can put all your cold stuff in there and just don't open it unless absolutely necessary, it keeps it cold a pretty long time in the case of a long power outage.

Hi Jordan and Bubba Re: canned foods storage life, when my mum's great aunt died, my parents had to clear out her house. There was a cupboard stuffed with REALLY OLD canned goods, some of which had gone rusty! My mum threw out blown or dented cans, she kept the others (even the rusty ones) when they were opened, if they smelled ok, they were used, and they tasted fine, even the meats!! Expiry dates are definitely only a guide.

I've been budgeting for a while but this is where the budget gets me: I put aside money for groceries but while at the store, I buy things I need like tin foil, napkins, dish soap, etc.... so how do you guys manage the money allocated for groceries vs supplies when buying them at the same store?? It always gets me cause then i have less cash left when I have to buy those at the same store I get my groceries cause I end up paying then together.
If puchasing those items seems expensive try the dollar store. You can then decide when your making your list what you want to buy at Walmart/Grocery store and what can be bought at a cheaper store.
Beverly Tovio I spent the weekend comparing prices of meats, produce, canned goods, and other things between Sam's club and Wal-Mart and Sam's club is still cheaper for me (per unit price). I think I will check out the dollar store for cleaning supplies and other things, thanks.
I'm single with no children ... I usually splurge with my income tax and buy something I wouldn't normally buy But the last 2 years I have used a chunk of my income tax to stock items for a year.... qtips cotton rounds vitamins things like that ... I have price checked and have a list for the 3 places I go ... April and it's done and I rarely run out
Jordan, you needed to stop fussing with the cardigan. You looked lovely and it wasn't revealing. I found you today. Love what you do. My state gets cyclones, (like hurricanes). When a storm is coming we fill water containers to make ice. By filling the freezer, totally full with water it creates solid ice that will keep the food for several days. I have had a freezer that held food for 6 days. It stayed frozen for couple of days then cold for couple more. We've also learned a full freezer, even with ice/water is good practice every day of the year as it reduces electricity usage.
5/6 gallon buckets are about a foot in diameter. So 4 of them takes up 4 foot square of floor space. Then you stick the buckets. I really like using Gamma Seal lids on my buckets. They make it easy to get into the buckets and stack them. The buckets go in your pantry or wherever. Then in the kitchen you have smaller containers for bucket items. For example. I have a coffee can in my kitchen with white rice. In my pantry I have a 5 gallon bucket for rice. When the rice in the kitchen is done, I refill the coffee can from the bucket. Once the bucket is empty it's time to buy more rice. At that point I will have a coffee cans worth of rice to hold me over until I buy anther 50lb sack of rice at Costco. White rice stored in a bucket like that has a shelf life of 10 years. So I don't bother with Mylar bags or oxygen absorbents. Since the rice is part of my regular food, it doesn't need to hang around for 25 years. I generally don't like having disaster food on hand. My disaster food and my pantry food are one and the same. Eat what you store and store what you eat.

FIFO is a term we use in the Food Service Industry. Where you are typically buying large quantities of each item. EVERYTHING is labelled with the date it was delivered, then the date that it was opened, then (if used in a recipee) the date that it was prepared, because each state it is in has a different storage duration (plus if it is frozen vs. refrigerated vs. shelf stable, etc). It is an excellent exercise to implement in your home food storage to make sure everything is always fresh/safe. FIFO all the things!
I live in NY so my freezer space is so limited... so i buy meat 1for 2 meals..... so 1 family size ground beef im going to use for meatballs on monday and maybe thursday i'll do tacos... i have a dry erase board on the side of my fridge where i keep note of what meat/fresh veggie i have and tend to loose track of when it gets pushed to the back of the fridge
Do you ever look at purchasing meat in bulk (i.e. 1/4 of a beef; 1/2 of a pig)? We find it less expensive than buying from the store and tastes SO much better!

We just did a pretty big restock up last couple of weeks. I had a nice stock pile up until Harvey. Food was super scarce here. I'm so glad I had a huge stock. I actually felt bad. We were eating like normal while tons of our friends were eating peanut butter sandwiches.
FIFO means full hands in full hands out LOL and it’s a restaurant term meaning take dirty dishes into the kitchen and leave with full hands of new food and drinks to run back to tables. It means work as efficiently as possible all night.

Use reusable cloth diapers and pads. So something's will be off your list. Garden help with some foods. Even flower pots everywhere around the house to grow some food.
I found what I think is an ammunition cabinet at a thrift store for $10 and that's what I put my cans in hahahaha. It's narrow and doesn't take up too much space but I can store almost 80 cans in it.
We are a family of (soon to be) 4. We have 17 animals though. We have a budget of 300 to 375 for the animals and 800 for us right now. We live in Cali. We are working on getting this number down, but the animal budget is pretty stable. Kinda sorta did shelftember in 2020 and did okay, went over the last 2 weeks.

So doing stocktober...my grocery budget/list for next week is done, after TWO HOURS of searching the sales and rewriting the list to stay on budget, I have a max $30 goal for produce, $30 for Costco,and am spending the rest on stocking up and what I'm calling " other" which is not part of my costco bulk buying...but isn't part of canned long term goods from regular stores either it's just stuff we need EI: almond milk, and nice to haves like frozen pizza for a lazy day... we eat a ton of fresh produce so it needs its own category and limit or I'll spend the whole $100 !

I have a small closet with horizontal shelves that start at about waist height, so I have a short, narrow rolling cart I got at a yard sale for $5 and made use of the short space under the shelves!
I use Tupperware yes it costs more up front but if it ever damages with normal use they replace it free even 20 years latter and they have great freezer organizer system and they have freezer to microwave storage.

Here in Australia, our material and food items are more expensive, due to low population less consumers. However, we recently got the big American chain store of Costco here in Melbourne about -5-6 years ago, and its made shopping so helpful economically for a lot of families. Bulk buying is a very new concept in this country. The things that is helpful for us is catalogs, we still get catalog specials stuffed in our mailbox, from various suppermarkets and it shows the specials, so people tend to buy off catalogs, for some this limits their impulse buying at the stores and helps keep track of their budgets. For me when I shop for my meats once a month, I buy 2-3 kg of meat and then portion size them, for a house hold of 4 people I divide chicken wings,and drumlets of 15 or 20 pieces per bag thats enough for one meal and meats 10-12 pieces per bag, I mark the bags of the type of meat and date them, so I know which to use first. With sea food I shop twice a month for fish and other I only buy a small amount coz we dont like to eat seafood thats been freezed for too long. As for cleaning products, I am allergic to chemicals, so I tend to use household natural products, like vinegar, salt, bi-carbonate, lemons,and peppermint, tea tree, citronela, oils and for cleaning hard surfaces like floors a steamer. As for energy we have solar for our electricity and hotwater. Here in Australia if you have solar and you dont use up all the energy, we can sell, it back to the electrical company or if I have a neighbour or someone that lives in an apartment renting and cannot or does not have solar but want to pay less for electricity I can sell it to them for a lesser price.

I know I’m late to the party (I’m binge watching!), but I live in a very small home and it takes creativity, but space can always be prioritised. I had a corner in my laundry which hubby built a floor to ceiling cupboard because our pantry was only 2 small overhead cabinets. We cleared out our linen cupboards and got two free shelves.
I'm glad you talked about back-up power! As a Florida girl, I almost lost all my fridge/freezer food after Irma. I would love to get a generator. I hadn't thought of checking Costco for them! Might I add as well to use Stocktober to stock up on holiday goods? (Cranberry sauce, extra gravy packets -- if you use that, bread to freeze for stuffing, etc.) Might help your November and December budget! Just a thought as I was watching this video. New Freeb, but still excited for Stocktober!

We just got a Costco membership, so this is super helpful! We are a family of four (we have 2 small kids) and I have definitely learned to ONLY buy what we ACTUALLY need at the big box stores - otherwise it truly wastes money!

I stoctobered in September. We had 20+ tornados here in Dayton Ohio on Memorial Day. Very important to have things like soup, prepared sauces, pasta, etc. I had refrigerated fresh food only that went bad after 4 days of no power. So now, I am stocking up primarily for such an emergency. Thank you for your info!

Hey! I’m a new subscriber!!! I’m so excited! I kno I’m super duper late to the comments lol but I just have to say our hometown here in Florida took a DIRECT hit from hurricane Michael last year. Because we do stock up on vegetables during the summer ( we grow our own) and we also deer hunt and fish every chance we get and on top of buying things on sale, my family was able to survive for a little more than a month without buying anything from the store. ( no electricity, trees in the road, weren’t able to travel, grocery stores were damaged and closed) We were also able to bless family, friends, and neighbors with what we had already stocked up on. It was hard on everyone, but we were super duper blessed. We also kinda stock up on propane and gasoline right before hurricane season.

Lots of great tips. I'm curious, who here is eating gluten free, sugar free, paleo-ish lifestyle AND doing it super cheap, because, We HAVE to, our health demands it!! When Jordan said they ate lots of pasta, I was like, Nope... aint happenin for me.... it cannot!! Also cant eat alot of other starches like potatoes and even non gluten grains... my family can, but not me, barely any. I think it's cool that Jordan and hubby did/do/are able, but she/they are also apparently very blessed to still be healthy, thin, energetic AND fertile while eating cheap, filling starches. That's great. But ain't my reality! So.... what tips and ideas do y'all have!?!? 😊
P.S. I love so much of what Jordan says, and I already do alot of it, my freezers and shelves are organized, I garden and preserve alot of our own, meal plan around what we have/needs used, stock up with sales, etc. I can make things stretch far, and put off grocery shopping for weeks. But eventually my husband 'makes' me go shopping so he has more food to pack his lunch.... he likes, and needs to have easy to eat foods in his lunch, like (gluten free) bread, lunchmeat or peanut butter (and homemade jam), crackers, cheese, fresh snackable veggies and fruit, and I usually have some type of cookie or bar in the freezer that I have already put in baggies ready for him to take. So while I think i am doing alot of Jordan's tips already, it still seems like I spend so much on groceries!

I love the envelope system it’s a great idea. Also the shopping budget, I’m in UK and $100 for family of 4 a week works out at £72 approx and it can be done if you shop around and be a savvy shopper.

I'm one of those that stores food under beds, coffeetables, corners of rooms. I can our produce and so those jars fit well under things. Then with things that I put in rotation storage and buy in bulk, I put it in gallon ziplocs and ask Sam's Club's bakeries for their icing containers and put them in there then label with a sharpie.
Spanish person here :) You inspired me to do 100€ per week (we are two adults) but those 100€ are for EVERYTHING except bills and debt (groceries, car, fun time...). Now we can save for future events (like have kids or house renovation). THANKYOU!

If you have a power outage contact your insurance company they might refund you for your lost food. In my situation USAA refunded our lost food in our fridge. Such a blessing.
I'm watching this video way late but if you have a top loader washer you can put all your cold stuff in there and just don't open it unless absolutely necessary, it keeps it cold a pretty long time in the case of a long power outage.
The off brand vacuum sealed bags on amazon are the exact same quality and will save you a TON.

Hi Jordan and Bubba Re: canned foods storage life, when my mum's great aunt died, my parents had to clear out her house. There was a cupboard stuffed with REALLY OLD canned goods, some of which had gone rusty! My mum threw out blown or dented cans, she kept the others (even the rusty ones) when they were opened, if they smelled ok, they were used, and they tasted fine, even the meats!! Expiry dates are definitely only a guide.
Properly canned goods are good for at least 30 years.
You should try a WinCo for a month if there's one close by you. Seriously, I love it there.

I put aside money for groceries but while at the store, I buy things I need like tin foil, napkins, dish soap, etc.... so how do you guys manage the money allocated for groceries vs supplies when buying them at the same store?? It always gets me cause then i have less cash left when I have to buy those at the same store I get my groceries cause I end up paying then together.

If puchasing those items seems expensive try the dollar store. You can then decide when your making your list what you want to buy at Walmart/Grocery store and what can be bought at a cheaper store.
Beverly Tovio I spent the weekend comparing prices of meats, produce, canned goods, and other things between Sam's club and Wal-Mart and Sam's club is still cheaper for me (per unit price). I think I will check out the dollar store for cleaning supplies and other things, thanks.

I usually splurge with my income tax and buy something I wouldn't normally buy But the last 2 years I have used a chunk of my income tax to stock items for a year.... qtips cotton rounds vitamins things like that ... I have price checked and have a list for the 3 places I go ... April and it's done and I rarely run out

My state gets cyclones, (like hurricanes). When a storm is coming we fill water containers to make ice. By filling the freezer, totally full with water it creates solid ice that will keep the food for several days. I have had a freezer that held food for 6 days. It stayed frozen for couple of days then cold for couple more. We've also learned a full freezer, even with ice/water is good practice every day of the year as it reduces electricity usage.
5/6 gallon buckets are about a foot in diameter. So 4 of them takes up 4 foot square of floor space. Then you stick the buckets. I really like using Gamma Seal lids on my buckets. They make it easy to get into the buckets and stack them. The buckets go in your pantry or wherever. Then in the kitchen you have smaller containers for bucket items. For example. I have a coffee can in my kitchen with white rice. In my pantry I have a 5 gallon bucket for rice. When the rice in the kitchen is done, I refill the coffee can from the bucket. Once the bucket is empty it's time to buy more rice. At that point I will have a coffee cans worth of rice to hold me over until I buy anther 50lb sack of rice at Costco. White rice stored in a bucket like that has a shelf life of 10 years. So I don't bother with Mylar bags or oxygen absorbents. Since the rice is part of my regular food, it doesn't need to hang around for 25 years. I generally don't like having disaster food on hand. My disaster food and my pantry food are one and the same. Eat what you store and store what you eat.

FIFO is a term we use in the Food Service Industry. Where you are typically buying large quantities of each item. EVERYTHING is labelled with the date it was delivered, then the date that it was opened, then (if used in a recipee) the date that it was prepared, because each state it is in has a different storage duration (plus if it is frozen vs. refrigerated vs. shelf stable, etc). It is an excellent exercise to implement in your home food storage to make sure everything is always fresh/safe. FIFO all the things!
I live in NY so my freezer space is so limited... so i buy meat 1for 2 meals..... so 1 family size ground beef im going to use for meatballs on monday and maybe thursday i'll do tacos... i have a dry erase board on the side of my fridge where i keep note of what meat/fresh veggie i have and tend to loose track of when it gets pushed to the back of the fridge
I put my deep freezer in my laundry room and I fold my laundry on it!

When we lived in an apartment we kept our freezer on our patio outside. it worked great.
Learning to can is a great tip. Shelf stable food is great. Especially if your freezer dies
We just did a pretty big restock up last couple of weeks. I had a nice stock pile up until Harvey. Food was super scarce here. I'm so glad I had a huge stock. I actually felt bad. We were eating like normal while tons of our friends were eating peanut butter sandwiches.

I found what I think is an ammunition cabinet at a thrift store for $10 and that's what I put my cans in hahahaha. It's narrow and doesn't take up too much space but I can store almost 80 cans in it.

We are a family of (soon to be) 4. We have 17 animals though. We have a budget of 300 to 375 for the animals and 800 for us right now. We live in Cali. We are working on getting this number down, but the animal budget is pretty stable. Kinda sorta did shelftember in 2020 and did okay, went over the last 2 weeks.

So doing stocktober...my grocery budget/list for next week is done, after TWO HOURS of searching the sales and rewriting the list to stay on budget, I have a max $30 goal for produce, $30 for Costco,and am spending the rest on stocking up and what I'm calling " other" which is not part of my costco bulk buying...but isn't part of canned long term goods from regular stores either it's just stuff we need EI: almond milk, and nice to haves like frozen pizza for a lazy day... we eat a ton of fresh produce so it needs its own category and limit or I'll spend the whole $100 !

My homeowners had pretty much covered all the food in my freezer when we have lost power..
I have a small closet with horizontal shelves that start at about waist height, so I have a short, narrow rolling cart I got at a yard sale for $5 and made use of the short space under the shelves!
I use Tupperware yes it costs more up front but if it ever damages with normal use they replace it free even 20 years latter and they have great freezer organizer system and they have freezer to microwave storage.
