If you want to understand how much better than anybody else to this day he was, just watch those lunge landings in the first pass of jumps. Then and to this day, NOBODY lands that low, wide and rock solid with perfect extended back leg. Nobody. Of course, nobody has ever matched the musicality and the choreography complexity at that tempo. But that first pass of jumps is just jaw dropping.
This is what I'm talking about. Nobody, even now has matched him. The line is absolutely flawless. I've said it on another video of this, there is nobody who lands so cleanly and in this position, they're all higher, not as sharp. For me there's no contest, he is the greatest, without question, and as you said, he proves exactly that on that short sequence.
What is so amazing about it is that all of that, landing lower, wider, more solidly, is in service to the art. It never appears gratuitous, it isn't about showing off, it is about maximum expression.
He dances with such abandon that you forget about how difficult this all is...the technique and power required. when you see another male dancer attempting it, no matter how well trained, you can't help but see they are working at it...with difficulty, and still never reach the height or speed of Misha. His is an effortless joy.
He makes it look effortless to the point it's just baffling to watch. I'm ashamed to admit I only learned about Misha recently, after I watched some ballet solo performances from other respected dancers and my mom made some comment that after 40 years still no-one has come close to his level. I thought she was exaggerating, but looking him up now it's obvious she wasn't. This performance alone just left me speechless, I've never seen anything like it.
Baryshnikov truly was, rather IS... the Nijinsky of his time. There's a reason he was even more celebrated than Nureyev. It is one of America's best attributes that he chose to call our country his home. When you saw him dance, it stayed with you. It was an experience you did not forget. The man enjoyed movie-star status for a reason. "Misha" was a gift to ballet... All we could do was give him the adoration he earned... He said of the American people, "They have been so generous. They will get back... as much as I can give..."
I am a dancer and watching this makes me cry. So much talent charisma Technique posture you name it he owns it into the and to this day I still shed a tear every time I watch a video where he is doing ballet
Well I saw him in Australia the year he defected and k whispered to my mum , I was 14, someday I will be his partner ! He did Don Q and I used to think I was. Biased when watching the likes of Sergei or Simkin who I adore and such brilliance but Baryshnikov does everything that bit better. That bit different and his musicality surpasses all , those nuances , light shade and those brief pauses. , he inspired my artistry and presence on stage , he really did and I met him years later and en pointe perfect partnership ! He set a new level a grandiose to mens ballet
Non sono un’esperta di danza ma mi sono commossa vedendo questo video , B. atterra con una tale precisione e soavità, che sembra sfidare la legge di gravità.Che artista DIVINO
I had the great privilege to see Mikhail Baryshnikov dance this solo from Le Corsaire in person. No matter how wonderful this video is, it pales in comparison with seeing him dance it live.
@@SuddenUpdraft It certainly was. I've missed so many local events (a Van Cliburn concert, Pavarotti at the opera) that at least I got to see Baryshnikov. Also got to see Jean-Pierre Rampal in concert.

Didn't read caption but when he started I'm like" that looks like Baryshnikov..." After that first phase of leaps I said... " That's gotta be him! No one else leaps like that!" I look and of course! I noticed back in the day many dancer were a tad sloppy, but not Mikhail. This man here! I haven't seen a dancer of his caliber since.
no one moves like Baryshnikov. He was a joy to watch-he flowed like water. So many times you can see dancers counting in their heads, see them trying so hard but not Mischa. He just moves to the music and it's all so natural. Le Corsaire is such a beautiful piece for him to dance, it shows all hs power and skill and artistry.
There was Vaslav Nyjinsky, Rudolph Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. We have been blessed to live in a time when the beauty of his art married with the advances of technology allow us to enjoy this otherworldly master of his craft.
His performance in Carmen is absolutely amazing. I never tire of watching it. I read that Rudolph Nureyev is considered the worlds number one male ballet dancer. Although very good I see no comparison to Misha whom I consider to be the world's number one male ballet dancer
It's his energy and his heart. He knows how to bring this passion forward in his body trained to express it. Total mastery. Watching him frees the soul.
It’s so hard to watch Baryshnikov n not be amazed! So much in a different league than the dancers we got now! What happened to the progression of arts, man!
When I was young Nureyev was a bombshell, but later you see Baryshnikov and he takes this to another level entirely. I feel disloyal to Nureyev saying this, because he absolutely shook up and revolutionised ballet in England and I saw him dance many times, but now many wonderful male dancers have taken ballet to higher and higher levels, and Barishnikov is amazing.
We took him for granted when I was young. We knew he was great but thought surely someone could rival him.. Now, everyone is crap. He doesn't have to try to violate perfect technique get attention. He's powerful, graceful, creative and has perfect technique. Perfection. It's astounding how beautiful his face is. Very masculine all the way round.
What I see here, and in virtually all Baryshnikov’s performances, is nothing short of physical perfection. The dedication & concentration required to reach this level is beyond my comprehension. And...well...all that aside, he’s not hard to look at either, and that makes him all the more magnificent to watch.
Видимо я одна из России. Пишу на русском. Очень люблю смотреть выступления русского артиста балета Михаила Барышникова. Пусть он живет в Америке. Но. Это русский артист балета. И он лучший. Никто не танцует как он.
Well, no, not exactly. He is in top physical condition. He is only 5'6". Most male ballet dancers are at least 5'8" to 6'3" and have very long limbs. Nevertheless, he is the best.
Nobody comes close...
This is what I'm talking about. Nobody, even now has matched him. The line is absolutely flawless. I've said it on another video of this, there is nobody who lands so cleanly and in this position, they're all higher, not as sharp.

Agreed 100%.
And this is real dancing not gymnastics as many dancers tend to do today.
What is so amazing about it is that all of that, landing lower, wider, more solidly, is in service to the art. It never appears gratuitous, it isn't about showing off, it is about maximum expression.
I'm confident Sergei Polunin and Kimin Kim are about as good as him but yes for his time he was just so much better then everyone else
He dances with such abandon that you forget about how difficult this all is...the technique and power required. when you see another male dancer attempting it, no matter how well trained, you can't help but see they are working at it...with difficulty, and still never reach the height or speed of Misha.
