Tokays are one of my absolute favourite geckos! I've worked with them for several years, and got one myself with the intent of proving their reputation wrong. Mine was what I'd consider puppydog tame. You could reach in and grab him, hand him off to other people, and pet him wherever you wanted, he wouldn't puff up or gape at all. The big key is to get one captive bred and young. Wild caught animals are exceptionally hard to work with, especially adult individuals, and unfortunately that's what people tend to pick up most, as they're cheaper and more readily available when you're searching for them. They can be socialized well, but demand patience and consistency while building threads of positive trust with them. You also have to be aware that you're likely going to get bit. Or at least lunged, bluffed and barked at, which, for people who don't realize how loud these guys can be, might be a little startling/intimidating! They are also very fast and dart-y, so you need to be extra careful when handling them, as they can run off quite quick and wedge themselves somewhere where you'll never see them again. All in all though, I don't recommend them for most people. Especially people wanting to show them off/handle them regularly, as they're very shy and easily spooked. But if you're someone who likes to work with reptiles with a bit more spunk to them, these guys can be quite great!
My little guy barked at me and lunged through the tank the other day...first time he's ever done it. I jumped like 5 ft back lol. When he's on or near the glass I put my hands right next to him, on the outside of the glass for now, and usually he just chills, but he was worked up that day. So I agree that the bark is incredibly startling and intimidating 🙂
I'd love to try Tokays. A lot of the Crested Geckos I have, I'd say about half, are flighty and have bitten me more than once. I have one starting out that bit me probably 9+ times as a baby that's a complete sweetheart now. I have another big boy I bought from a breeder that was super jumpy and nippy and he's calmed down quite a bit. He was biting the breeder every time she took him out of his enclosure. I think he's gotten me two or three times. So I guess I do prefer my geckos a little on the spicier side because the reward of getting them tamed and calmed down is SO much higher. I can be patient because these are animals that live for a long time so it's not like there's any rush to tame them down. 😊😊😊
Jan 8th - went to my local pet shop for feeders. They had a Tokay for only $30. I went on a mad rush 48 hour research binge, threw together a quarantine tank, and as of Jan 10th, I'm a proud new Tokay mommy. Your intro (from 3yr ago) is so spot on.
I got home from visiting my wife's mom in Vietnam. She has 2 Tokay's that live in her bathroom. They go outside at night to hunt and come back very early in the morning. I was awakened every morning by that loud as fuck TOKAY call. At first, it scared the shit out of me. I mean, my god, it's LOUD. It's also brilliantly colored. So cool!
My cousin give me a Baby tokay gecko cought in his room 🤣First day he give me 12 bites😅 and second day he give me bark only and on the third day he's very calm and I hand feed him🥰
I just got a tokay gecko off of Craigslist. I run a very small reptile rescue, so I’m fairly used to taking in the sick ones. I think they were just getting rid of it because it’s mean as hell 😂 the girl who gave it to me was like “oh he’s captive bred, he’s really sweet” I was like… bullshit lady but I’ll take him lol
Dude. Chill!! We had some wild tokay slipped in our house in Myanmar. We ddnt kill them. They lived in our house for years. Very calm animals, we never fed them.. They feed on mosquito and pest on the wall. They kept the walls clean.
I was about to return my tokay I bought yesterday but your videos have been really helping I practiced the glove method for a couple minutes as a test and I can already tell I can handle working with her you gave me motivation, honestly, thankyou man💚💯
We lived in southern Ca. it was so mean we just let it roam around. It had a tank but only visited it once in a while but it was fun walking around and hearing it bark at you from a wall.
I love my chonky boy. I've only had him a few weeks now, and he's already come a long way. Poor dude was terrified when I brought him home (not sure on his back story, he was dropped off at the store I get my feeder rats from a couple days prior, already an adult), never came out of his log if he knew my kids or I were in the room, wouldn't take food from me, and was so quiet I thought he was a female (was told he was). He now comes out with us around, lets me tong feed him, and he loves to serenade me all night. He was not an intended purchase tho I'd wanted one for years, I just went in for feeder rats and pangea, found him and couldn't leave without him. He was only the second Tokay I've ever seen in person, they're not popular in Michigan precisely because, well, you know lol. I happened to have an empty tank that will work until upgrade time, and I just knew his life wouldn't be great unless he found a crazy owner like me that loves working with the crotchety animals. One of my best $45 purchases, and truly a once in a lifetime situation that I ended up with my dream gecko when I wasn't even looking.
been wanting one for years know everything there is to know for a tokay owner in california and at a reptile show my dad surprises me by impulse buying everything for the tokay including the tokay
Even this sounds pretty nice when talking about tokays haha. I would also add that you need to be careful what kind of room they are kept in because they’re crazy fast and WILL get out. If they see a small hole in the wall / heating vent it’s over lol.
Been looking for someone selling cbb tokays for awhile,at least a few generations in,if anyone knows anyone lmk,and I joined the membership just bcuz u pointed that out about pitbulls lol your the man, keep it up
I had a tokay gecko for 9 years, and she never bit me. But I handled her a lot. I was afraid at first but she jumped on me so after that it was love. She was full grown when I bought her at a reptile show. I'm not sure if if captive bred but I really loved her and was so sad when she died.
i’m currently in Bali, Indonesia staying at an AirBnB and we have a large female tokay in our room. its beautifully scary. i worked at a pet store 20+ years ago, and we had tokay’s, so i know better than to agitate it. 😊
just like tarantulas, geckos insticts and defensiveness will vary depending on where their from and what role they play in the wild, if it comes from a area with alot of predators it will obviously be more naturally defensive
Many years ago, I had two tokay geckos. This video is right on - these lizards are not for the faint of heart. They certainly know how to bite, and I found that the bite was painful even through gloves. That said, they are entertaining. They will make full use of a good enclosure that gives them a lot to do, and I found their angry behavior to be somewhat endearing. Their attitude also made feeding easy. Since they are very eager to bite, it is a simple matter to drop some food into that gaping maw. The gecko bites down, realizes that it is food and not a finger, and greedily swallows the meal. I'm certain that the animals I had were wild caught, but fortunately, they survived for a long time. Back in the day, finding a captive bred animal was impossible. If I decided to get into these little monsters again, I would definitely seek out a captive bred animal. I'm glad people are breeding them even if the return on investment isn't likely to be good given the unfortunate availability of dirt-cheap wild caught geckos. If you want an entertainingly angry little monster and don't mind sacrificing a finger or two, these geckos can make good pets, but it is best to know what you are getting into.
I know it is a very late response. My first experience with a tokay was back in 82. My mother was heading out to work, and I was woke up by her screaming that an alligator was on our stairs. I went and caught it, and fell in love with the way it looked, the croaking, and attitude. About 4 months ago I bought a cbb from pangea, and 2 months ago a pair of Florida field collected tokays. I loved tokays from that first one that I caught. I follow your whole tokay playlist for more info on them. I do have a question, what is your input on their cousins the green eyed Gecko's, I have been looking at those as well?
If and when my girlfriend and I get enough experience, I kinda want to get one of these adorable little hellspawn. Love their sounds, and I’d imagine that taming an animal with as much of a reputation for being aggressive as the Tokay feels amazing.
Tokays are super dope. I love them. Everyone here probably loves them. That being said .... they are the wolverines of the gecko world. Again, love em 🤣
Great video!! Impulse buying of tokays is how I ended up with my rescued tokays. People just don't realize what they are getting into. This video goes a long way in helping buyers understand. Thanks! I do love my tokays and am getting a few of them to come onto my hand for feeding...that alone has taken a year of daily work with the animal. It is my dream to offer tamed tokays into the market. LOL thank goodness it's a very long term goal. Hey I don't have IG but I am going to be setting up FB. Can I send you a pic of my female tokay that I need help determining the morph of?
Oh my gosh, my Tokay is named Dahlia (after the murder because of that wide smile and violence lol) she got me through a glove when she was small and lord Jesus I have respect for her now. She’s big now and I couldn’t imagine the bite now lol 🥲 It took a long terrifying ten minutes to get her off 😅
I live in Florida and just caught one. Any advice for caring for an adult tokay? I would have left it alone but knowing they are invasive it seemed like a win win if I take care of it.
I was 10 years old an went to pet store an seen a tokay loved it I talked my mom into getting it I took it home an had welding gloves I heald it every day an it was not nice then one day I let go of it it ran up my arm an stopped at my neck I stood very still long story short it didn't bite I took gloves off an pet it an had him for 5 years every day I'd open his cage an he liked run up my arm set on my head neck or shoulder iv loved today's ever since
I'm a snake gal but decided that if I ever defeat my fear of feeder insects crawling around my house, I'm definitely getting a nightmare paralysis demon gecko. I already have to use gloves for half of my collection, another animal like that is kind of expected at this point 😅
i 'inherited' my tokay from my son. i fixed up a bigger (40 gallon) tank but... how the he** do i get him from his 20 gallon tank to the new one? there is NO WAY you will ever lay a hand on him. the tank has been ready for weeks and i just can't figure out how to get him in the new tank without being bit or losing him.
For anyone that's a first time reptile owner and want a gecko. Get a leopard gecko. Leopard geckos are nice, got tons of variarity in colors and rarity, perfect for first timers and are very mellow by nature. Tokays arn't a beginner animal imo. Honestly get a tokay, just don’t try to grab it. Let it get comfortable with you on it’s own accord and build up that trust. Maybe I just got lucky but my tokay has never so much as mouth gaped at me, or tried to bite. Patience is key, beautiful animals.
I’ve bred tokays for up to 15 years “I’m 34” and I’ll tell u the truth/facts they are for awesome pets as long as u know what u are doing 😎 I’ve had males and females bred from the clutches/broods/ 🥚 that have literally let me hand raise them/feed them by hand 🤚 with not one bite, and then the rest that will try to death roll and bite off your finger or bite down and never let go lol 😂 lol, they are know to be the most aggressive lizard on planet earth henss the name pitbull of the reptile world……… All i have to say is I love them,as of right now I have a male and female “the male is around 5 years old the female is only 2” i got them in a enclosed terrarium “40 gallon “ with 3 different kinds of lights ,one is uva,the other is uvb,and a regular full spectrum led,i have a temp Matt underneath the bottom of the tank that stays at 83 degrees,i mist the tank with spring water 3 times a day,i only feed them with calcium vit.3 once a month “because too much will lead to calcium stones which’s can kill 😞 “ For food i feed them around 1000 gut loaded crickets 🦗 from North Carolina, about 20 hornworms, meal worms and super worms ,and every now and then roachs 🪳 …….. the longest tokay i ever had was my one of my best friends he lived to be 15 years old before dying from calcium stone 😞

I payed 45 euro for some gorgeous tokays a bit fighsty but all cb, wonderful animal I love em, should everyone get one if you don't like to get bit definitely not get a tokay.
I can tell you they aren't good pets... because they are all over my Florida neighborhood. That means one or more Tokay owners decided they weren't good pets.
Tokays are one of my absolute favourite geckos! I've worked with them for several years, and got one myself with the intent of proving their reputation wrong.

I don’t think anyone should impulse buy any animal. It’s always good to research well beforehand to make sure you’re giving proper care.

One day. ONE DAY! I will fk around and find out with a Tokay 😂😂

Bruh how did she think it was an alligator? Since when we're alligators like that?
Good video! Thanks for the info.
I used to keep green iguanas so a tokay is a walk in the park at this point. I tend to love angry lizards I guess
If and when my girlfriend and I get enough experience, I kinda want to get one of these adorable little hellspawn. Love their sounds, and I’d imagine that taming an animal with as much of a reputation for being aggressive as the Tokay feels amazing.

Everyone acts like there bite is the worst but it’s only bad if the lock on to some loose skin
If you can cohab tokays I wanted to know if you can cohab only males and if you can’t if you can a male and females would they breed?
I tamed 2 tokay geckos in a month. eventually they get tiered of biting u after awhile
Can you do a video on mangrove monitors
i 'inherited' my tokay from my son. i fixed up a bigger (40 gallon) tank but... how the he** do i get him from his 20 gallon tank to the new one? there is NO WAY you will ever lay a hand on him. the tank has been ready for weeks and i just can't figure out how to get him in the new tank without being bit or losing him.
I've had a sav. monitor he was an asshole but a couple months of training he was great. is there a comparison in temperament
I compare them as the gecko version of a monitor lizard.
For anyone that's a first time reptile owner and want a gecko. Get a leopard gecko. Leopard geckos are nice, got tons of variarity in colors and rarity, perfect for first timers and are very mellow by nature. Tokays arn't a beginner animal imo.
If you want something bigger, go for a bearded dragon. Don't forget, beardies eat a lot of insects so you need to aford that for them, they need insects and not just veggies.
Had a leopard gecko for 20 years and it was my first reptile. I loved her so much and still miss her
Bit late got a baby 2 weeks ago been bitten 16 times lost it twice and spent 4 hours trying to catch and put it back in the enclosure!!!
one of the best advice videos i've watched. refreshing honest take x
I am new to a hobby... I bought 1 and it was a male a wild caught....and after a week i bougt another wild caught tokay iand it was a female and because i dont have enclosure I decided to keep them communal and after 1month and a half..morning i was amazed and surprised that the female lays 2 eggs ... I was so happy.. the eggs are now 12 days old and i hope this eggs will become a babies soon....
tokays are only violent if people don't watch you're video on handling no joke i did what you said to and she is practically a puppy. The best part for me was i got her from petco a week after the got her so I was impressed to see that she was very healthy.
I live in the tropical far east. Tokays live in my house, breed in my house, and have the whole house to run free. I can not understand why anyone would want to restrict this territorial lizard in it's hunting range to a glass tank, simply because you want this lizard, does not say much for that person's intellectual ability wanting to keep such a fine creature in a tank
I have maybe 8 or more adults, one dominant male, who is at least a foot long, with eggs everywhere. I have no idea how many I have under 8 inches.
But then they run around my house freely as I live in the Philippines. I can get close to them, but I tend to leave them alone.
This just made me want one more😂
Honestly get a tokay, just don’t try to grab it. Let it get comfortable with you on it’s own accord and build up that trust. Maybe I just got lucky but my tokay has never so much as mouth gaped at me, or tried to bite. Patience is key, beautiful animals.
I kinda like my tokay to be a hell spawn so I don't really want to tame him down lol
i am getting a captive adult for 110 (includes shipping) no impulse buy for me!
I’ve bred tokays for up to 15 years “I’m 34” and I’ll tell u the truth/facts they are for awesome pets as long as u know what u are doing 😎 I’ve had males and females bred from the clutches/broods/ 🥚 that have literally let me hand raise them/feed them by hand 🤚 with not one bite, and then the rest that will try to death roll and bite off your finger or bite down and never let go lol 😂 lol, they are know to be the most aggressive lizard on planet earth henss the name pitbull of the reptile world………
All i have to say is I love them,as of right now I have a male and female “the male is around 5 years old the female is only 2” i got them in a enclosed terrarium “40 gallon “ with 3 different kinds of lights ,one is uva,the other is uvb,and a regular full spectrum led,i have a temp Matt underneath the bottom of the tank that stays at 83 degrees,i mist the tank with spring water 3 times a day,i only feed them with calcium vit.3 once a month “because too much will lead to calcium stones which’s can kill 😞 “
For food i feed them around 1000 gut loaded crickets 🦗 from North Carolina, about 20 hornworms, meal worms and super worms ,and every now and then roachs 🪳 …….. the longest tokay i ever had was my one of my best friends he lived to be 15 years old before dying from calcium stone 😞
❤️ tokays
I’m watching this after buying one💀 but don’t worry I have a fair amount of research
Let’s get bimpson number one
"I'm buying all the tokay geckos from Petco!" ha ha ha TBH, tokays kinda scare me. They are pretty, but yikes those attitudes! I'll stick with my dopey crested geckos that don't have a thought in their little heads.
House geckos have a attitude believe that
I payed 45 euro for some gorgeous tokays a bit fighsty but all cb, wonderful animal I love em, should everyone get one if you don't like to get bit definitely not get a tokay.
I appreciate everything he said but it definitely made me not want to buy one😂. Very informative ❤
NOT A DEMON I love them😊
👍👍👍👍👍
These geckos must drink a certain amount of blood before initiating you into its clan.
I would get one but there's no way my husband will be ok with us keeping one at the house.
I can tell you they aren't good pets... because they are all over my Florida neighborhood. That means one or more Tokay owners decided they weren't good pets.
Tokays aren't daft either. They're smart and fast!
