Yep...I have a brand new Aethos I impulsively bought when it came in stock. Had to grab it quick. I've put like 50 miles on it, and it's an amazing bike...but realized my other bikes are nice too and don't need it. Now I've just started the process to sell it :(

Honestly I would imagine you have a more care free time riding a cheaper/ simpler bike. If something breaks, or you crash, or rocks fly up at your frame etc. etc. you won't feel as bad as you would with a really expensive "dream bike". At least for me I would much rather have an "old faithful" bike then a "my baby" bike.

Totally understand the "it's not the bike it's the rider" argument. I remember going out to the racetrack with my 420hp Mustang and getting absolutely SMOKED by a Mazda Miata because I had no idea what I was doing. High end doesn't always translate to faster. You still gotta know how to shred!

My full squish is BY FAR the flag ship of my stable. Lets be honest, throwing money at a 140+ travel bike in the right places does lighten and liven it up. That bike will be right at home on a group ride with short travel bikes, so it starts to become a two in one deal.

I ride on a trail approximately 90km a week. I own one bike. It's a 2016 Kona Taro. I replace what breaks, I service it and I add upgrades when needed or wanted. If you are about riding you have one bike otherwise you are about showing people what you have.I always ride alone. It is "me" time. Riding has kept my sanity over the last couple of years. I have health problems and the riding helps me a lot.

I still have a great time on my current "down counrty" converted bike and it doesn't have any issues or worn out parts yet. I will ride it until I get a new one and keep this as a workout/daily rider. I am with you on not needing the latest and greatest but in my case the new geo stuff would benefit me for the riding I do. I'm looking at mid travel (150mm) bikes with alloy frames and some reliable shimano deore components and I'm a happy camper! Thanks for sharing your mtb hobby with use all!

Love this message. And I share your mindset. I came back to cycling/MTB this year after many years away, and for the best reason of all-my young daughter has mastered her "two-wheeler" and loves riding.
While I knew that my holdover from the 90s wasn't going to cut it, I also knew that what mattered was riding and having fun-not the bike. So I found a still-old-but-newer-than-mine MTB that had been upgraded some and well cared for, and bought it online for a few hundred bucks. A few more upgrades of my own and a tune-up from my local shop, and now we ride as a family all the time and love it.
    It's all about the enjoyment!

After having nothing but carbon frames for the last several years, i recently found myself back on an alloy frame. Absolutely no regrets! I agree, the industry is pushing for hyper expensive bikes to become the normal. Yes, my entire build group on my bikes has been top tier (AXS, eeWings, RSC's, I9/NOBL, Cane Creek), but those parts found themselves on an alloy frame 1/3rd the cost of a carbon frame, and the alloy build rides just as good as any carbon frame and dare I say this new alloy frame is on par with Yeti's switch infinity. Shout out to Canfield and the CBF suspension! As for weight, its negligible, my alloy Canfield weighs just the same as my last Stumpjumper EVO. My $0.2, save money on an alloy frame and dump your hard earned coin in to top tier components.

This was an awesome video to watch and something I think people new to mtb need to see. I have been riding for nearly 3 years, I started on a budget hard tail and moved to a second 2015 merida full susser. It is more than capable, it keeps up fine with other bikes, I ride with people on a variety of different bikes at different price points. The bike has never let me down, there has been some wear and tear but that's to be expected.
Mtb can be expensive but you will not have any less of an experience if you dont have a top of the line bike. And you can only go as fast as YOU can go. 9 times out of 10 the bike will out perform you. Just ride what you've got folks!

After a month I tought „Man, I need better shifter, better fork, better pedals etc” but for now, I don’t need any high end components. Just hop on my bike and go where I want to go. No need to complain. It’s all about having fun of what you already have.

I have a 10+ year old 26” Pivot Mach 5 that after a 27.5 front wheel change still makes me smile. I worked in the Bike Industry for over 13 years but the constant push to ‘next’ and ‘upgrade’ and the sheer waste of the Industry burnt me out. I too have only the time for 1 bike moderately priced bike in my life between family/religious/work responsibilities. I've recently gotten back into the sport after walking away for a while after years of racing. I'm keeping it simple with one trail bike (Commencal Meta TR29 when it arrives in Jan with only a few minor upgrades planned - cushcore, better dropper, etc) and am focusing more on enjoying the ride with friends, trying new things, stopping to enjoy where I am along the trail and not on training/racing/miles. Best and most honest MTB video I’ve seen in ages. My favourite current bike is a cheap second hand $ 700 Fuse hardtail, cheap brakes, no dropper seat and 10 measly gears. It’s not even the right size for me but I thrash it and don’t worry about it getting scratched. When people start dropping $10K+ on a bike ,I think we have lost the point of MTBing. I hardly watch any of the TH-cam channels I used to watch, all the usual suspects because it always seems to be new this, new that. Who cares. None of them have influenced me to buy crap I don’t need to enjoy a simple bike ride. But you Josh mr Daily MTBRider are guilty of influencing me in one regard. I mostly ride alone and I don't care if someone appreciates my XTR over a GX or NX, I get the better stuff because often times it works better, it is lighter and/or stronger.

Great advice. It's so easy to get drawn in and spend up on bikes and kit. They are nice of course but simple, reliable affordable bikes can be so much fun which is what most of us are after.
Pimp and new doesn't equal better / more fun.

Mountain biking should be about mountain biking, not mountain bikes. It’s fine to have a nice bike or two, but we should never let materialism overcome the stoke of riding. Congrats on getting back to basics.

If someone enjoys working on bikes as much as riding, or along with riding, nothing wrong with that necessarily. But it can easily be an endless cycle of upgrades. And you can work on much cheaper bikes and still enjoy the working with your hands part that balances out a more desk type job.

In 2015 I bought a Santa Cruz 5010. I’ve put over 6k miles on it, raced it at Sea Otter, shuttled at Downieville and everything in between. The old girl still has plenty of life in her and I’m happy with my one bike quiver. I love my bike, take care of it, and it’s treated me well.

I've got an old Trek, which I've upgraded a bunch of bits and pieces on, and I've always got FOMO as all my friends have upgraded to full squish, and I'm still running my cheap arse bike! But I really like riding. I like it on my crappy old bike. I'd like it on a new bike too... but this video is another good reminder that the skills that I'm learning are the most important thing. Thanks Josh.

Agree 100%. the fun in mountain biking is the challenge it represents; you have the same fun in a mostly basic bike as in a very expensive one; recentely, i got to ride a vintage steel mtb: cantilever brakes, no dropper post, no suspension at all, thumb shifters, etc. and while I was way slower than my friends in full sus. bikes, the only thing that I really missed from my modern, full sus. bike, were the disc brakes.

I love your attitude n approach to riding. It's all about the skill of the rider. Fundamentally u just need a bike that will suit the riding and trails that you are most inclined to ride. Especially if you stick to mostly familiar fun local trails. As most riders do. Thank you for this video and the honesty.

Funny you mentioned this. While I love supporting local bike shops, I'm glad they're having problem getting stock. Parts and frames are the best they're going to get. Fit yourself with the parts that matches your style and then a frame. You don't need new parts. If you need a new frame, sell the one you have and pick another one that fits the parts you have. You don't need to buy a whole new bike

Sure I probably could have been happy on a 5k bike, but I like this one more. I'm comfortable on it, better brakes, longer fork, this stuff helps with my weight.
To each their own though. Good on ya for recognizing an overstep.

This is why I love my Specialized Status 160! It wasn't cheap but it also wasn't too expensive and it's a low to midrange bike when compared to that Evil Offering V2 you had. I will most likely never need anything nicer or fancier than this bike and I have a ton of fun on it every time I ride which is all that matters!

I know I get lost in having the latest and greatest but just like you said, the reality is that most of us with full time jobs and family don’t really need that. I just recently purchased a Specialized Status 140 and will hopefully be taking it out soon. The bike was 2600.00, which I feel is still expensive but for the build, it was better than anything else I could find for that price in my home town of Santa Cruz Ca.

Only debilitating part is the body helps on the knees and back the full suspension will always fill a need. Some of it is terrain which like downhill are rocking a inner dream and love for the need. You are right the passion for the trails tracks and roads all have a specific build to conquer the dream how much to spend who knows. The real question is what to do next and that's purely have fun enjoy and live flourishing in the gifts we are given to enjoy which is one another. Great message man, I think a lot of people can relate. I've been in the same place with mountain biking as well as music. When it comes down to it, hardly no one is going to notice the difference between a $500 dollar guitar through a $500 amp simulator, and a $3000 boutique guitar and through a $5000 handwired tube amp. Same deal with bikes. I'm not a great rider, and as much as I think a nice FS would be fun, I downgraded from my ~2k hardtail and built up a bike for around $800 that I still won't be outriding anytime soon.
On top of it all, there's something that feels really satisfying about using the gear you have near to it's full potential, rather than having really nice gear you always have a slight twinge of guilt that you're not good enough to justify having it. At least that's been my experience.
    God bless!

Just added another bike to my Diamondback Catch 1… just got a custom Santa Cruz V10CC. Yea it’s partly the bike you are riding that will determine how the ride feels when landing big jumps. 130mm of travel to 215mm of travel just can’t be described you have to experience it.

  • @oakleygold

I guess it all depends on what and how you ride. I still have, and very highly enjoy, my 2001 Brodie hardtail but found myself riding park.
So, I got my first F/S. A 2015 Pivot Firebird. It was great and helped me take my riding to the next level. Soon I found myself looking into a downhill bike ... but this would be another bike.
I did some research and looked around for a "do it all" bike. Then a friend let me ride his Trek Slash and , after researching it, I pulled the trigger on my first brand new high end ( at 52 years old I can finally afford one) mountain bike. I couldn't be happier with this bike. My progression, even in the short time I've had the Slash, is undeniable!
I'm not a bike snob in any way! Maybe I missed the message here but having the "latest & greatest" sometimes just happens ...
I keep my hardtail because it's loads of fun and sometimes ... ya gotta get back to basics.
I'm glad your decision has inspired others, good luck and ride safe!

Very interesting bike-xistential video. I currently have a "full quiver" too, and feel more and more disgusted by My own excess. I admit I found myself chasing the "perfect bike" which doesn't exist of course. I am a counselor so study psychology, what we experience when piling up bikes and stuff is our brain tricking us into thinking the next and best will make us more stoked. Then hedonic adaptation occurs and the new bike quickly looses its zing Zang. Anyway, I very much appreciate your video and am ready to simplify my mountain biking life too, and just enjoy the riding.

    this is so true
I feel like people want to get the best climbing bike or the best bike for designing, when you really should look back to your first mountain bike, it probably not the best desinding or climbing bike but in hindsight you had fun on it, you made it work for what you wanted to do. In short you can get used to riding pretty much bike in any situation. You just need to be content for what you have and you will have so much more fun and enjoyment.

I totally agree with you on this. I think people tend to have way more bike than they need, in both price and travel/capability. Bikes are pretty simple and we all ride them to have fun. If you find you're bored with your local trails or are too stressed when riding that you'll break your $2k wheels, I think simplifying and going with something less expensive is the way to go. Very few people, if any, need an $8k bike.

On a serious note though, I just got back into riding after a nearly 15 year break. Buying a bike was the weirdest most uncomfortable thing to do with everything going on in the world. Most stores here in the bay area were bare, so there was no way of trying out a bike if you wanted to play the order lottery with the shop. I ended up going with a rocky mountain growler 50 after ordering a 40 only because the 50 came in first and there was no ETA on the 40. It's a great bike that can be ridden anywhere I would have taken a full suspension. It really makes you choose good lines and use your skills instead of just riding over things.
