Hunting Ants and Drinking Muddy Water (episode 14)

  • Obtaining clean and safe drinking water is a high priority in any survival situation. It is a good idea to carry a filter when spending time in the wilderness but in the case that a filter is not available, what primitive techniques can be used to filter natural water as a first step in the disinfection process? In this video I explore one very simple filtration technique and then weather conditions interrupt my efforts. Nonetheless, I collected the muddy river water and did my best to make it safe. According to the research I've done and personal experience, boiling natural water will make it safe to drink, however, the potential presence of heavy metals or chemicals, which are not neutralized by boiling alone, may be present in the water and make it unsafe if consumed during a long period of time. In this video I also snacked on raw ants as a nutritious snack. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

    FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
    Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
    Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandal...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
    Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
    Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
    How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 48.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including TH-cam. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

In a remote village i grew up in Uganda, we didn't have tap water or borehole water. It is a dry place and water is a blessing, however muddy it is, once you fetch it from the dug up pond, we you utilize it, sometimes we would boil it, sometimes when its finished and thirsty, you end up drinking the muddy water. Growing up in Africa and spending most of my time with natives, I drank water from containers used as their only available water, tanks or drums loaded with mosquitoes. Before drinking, we taped the tank to cause them to dive from the surface, then we scooped up a can full, and drink. Great old times.
I miss living as a free person, hunting and fishing for meals, not as a sport.

@@georgewhitehouse8630 … can’t. Even that country has lost its freedom. Actually, it’s now communist and the rich are not sharing, as it was intended to be. The rich and politicians got control of everything, and the promises about the rich paying their share, WAS BULL SCHITT. Now no one has guns to go hunting, and they can’t afford to buy fishing equipment. As a kid, I use to go fishing almost every day, and I gave the fish to the poor. I lived free because I was a kid. I was free to do whatever I wanted. There was no laws on raising your own food, whether it was animals or vegetables. Anyone was allowed to find a piece of land and call it his own. Politicians and taxes and greed, ended it all.

So there are these packets called P&G Purifier of Water. Each one treats about 2.5 gallons of water. A box of 240 costs $100.00; and with a couple of buckets, and a cloth to use for filtering, this would allow you to treat several gallons of water at a time and store it.

It may also be helpful to have a source of salt as well, given all of the water around the area. Salt is also very important in survival situations! If you get hurt (hopefully not) you can flush your wounds, it can replace lost electrolytes, it can preserve meat, AND tan hides as well as dehydrate other resources. It might be something worth looking into when you get everything settled.

Award Chad with the field scout badge.
Scouting around to find out what is in your area is a good Idea and reveals
resources that you can use and more importantly, regrow or replant or regenerate the source.
It's a great idea to not only be a taker of resource but a caretaker and a replacer of the resource.
This allows you to continue to take but to also replace and replenish not just for you but the wild life and
plants. So important to remember that.

Can I make a suggestion for when you boil water or cook something in a hole like that? Why not find a couple of forked sticks, preferably green, but as they won't be in contact with the fire very long, any forked sticks will do. Cut one side of the fork off short, maybe an inch or two, and cut the stick off right below the fork, but leave one side of the fork long. Make sure the shorter fork is small enough to fit through the holes in the handles of your pot, but still sturdy enough to use to lift the full pot out by. That way you can hold the long part of the fork to remove your pot without having to reach down into the fire for it. It would save your hands from getting burned as much.

Oh the struggle. I feel you.
But!!! I can't remember what tribe did this. Klamath mabie? they took a long pice of reed and filled it with cleaned sand in between the nodes. And sucked it up to clean the water. And spit it out into a pottery container. Rinse and repeat until they had enough.
So if you can find a natural straw of some sort mabie give it a shot. Might try adding some black hardwood charcoal as well.
I know puting dirty water in the mouth doesn't sound fun. Still better than dysentery.

I think I know what you're talking about - giant cane. Also known as carrizo, or reed. It is hollow and appears like bamboo. That is interesting. I never heard of them sucking the straw like a LifeStraw. Good tip!

I would use the dead cow carcase skin as a roof. Boiling the water and collecting the vapor into a catch basin will provide purified drinking water. It may not be easy to set up but is well worth the effort.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

When I first found the cow carcass I thought of using the hide as a roof, but after I placed a piece of it in the water and discovered how brittle it became I quickly discarded that idea. I really don't know if there is anything useful I can do with it. It still smells like rotting flesh too.... Making a distillery would be great but yes, it will require me to make some equipment. Maybe later on I will.

Hi Chad! I heard about ant eggs, but did not know that the ants themselves can be eaten. As a child, we collected ant juice. We gnawed a bark stick and put it in the anthill. The ants attacked the stick. After that, we shook off the ants from the stick and licked it. Brightly sour taste, incomparable with anything. Sorry for the google translator.
