Also I look both endings in the remake. The theatrical one shows Seymour growing up and not allowing anyone to walk over him anymore. He also takes responsibility for his wrongs by destroying the plant. The original is cool and matches the play
I would just like to clarify that there are no special affects used in the film. The Audrey II at the end was actually a puppet being controlled by around 50 people. Also, I personally prefer the final ending simply because I really like the characters (helped by their incredible actors) and wanted to see them succeed.
i also prefer the theatrical ending, it fits nicely with the pacing and the characterization we see leading up to it. had seymour's character been less sympathetic, the darker ending would make more sense. Here, we are really rooting for her, and for him to succeed.
"Suppertime" is my favorite song in the movie. That slick bass line and the harmonizing of the Greek Chorus sealed my fate. I could listen to it all day.
so up till until recently I had never seen the 1986 movie (but knew of it through pop culture, particularly an odd parody of somewhere that's green with the creepy old perver that has a thing for Chris in family guy envisioning himself as Audrey.... yeah.....) but a local festival whos known for putting on really good versions of popular musicals is currently doing little shop of horrors, so i decided to go see it, so i know what happens at the end so the "happy ending" doesn't really make sense other than they had to do it to save the movie..... i now own the directors cut version and have watched the 1960 version for interest
What.... the..... FUCK? How do I go 34 yrs without never coming across the fact that there is an ALTERNATE ENDING? That monster plant/Godzilla style footage is INCREDIBLE!!!!!! .....(although I'm pretty sure I would prefer the theatrical ending)
Refer Madness (1936) would be a good review also, i love this video, glad you spent a bit of time on it, longer ones are better :)) Awesome as always brother, :)) Happy Halloween!! 👻
Minor correction, but it was never established that Audrey was Mushnik's daughter in the 1960 version...now, the 1991 "Little Shop" Cartoon series on the other hand...
I think the best part of the ‘86 version is Audrey 2. CGI just doesn’t look the same. You can always tell that it’s not really there. Puppetry, makeup, animatronics, etc., while more expensive are worth the effort
Excellent review! Well researched and entertaining. I do feel like most of the comparisons were to the 1960 movie and the 86 version and wish the stage version was brought up more but that’s just a small nitpick
WHAT THE HECK!?!?!?! I DO NOT remember the ending with the plant taking over the world AT ALL. I remember the ending where seymore electrocutes it to death with a loose power main... did my parents feed me some sort of walmart "edited for purity" cut of this masterpiece?

That’s amazing! I knew there were no special effects but 50 people? Gee!

underrated song. the shots of the singing chorus that come in and out just add more to the suspense

nah the cooler ending was cut due to not many people liking it in the test screenings... so they made the "happy ending" XD
