      Yes, I'll second that suggestion... Listen to the way he says "Sail On!..." He's a badass when the storytelling requires it. :)

    I hope you feel better! You must listen to Dio sing with Rainbow (the live version of Mistreated from the Live in Munich '77 show). Thanks for the great video and analysis.

    Dio was a beast and one of the absolute nicest rock stars you could ever meet. Another voice you should hear is Geoff Tate from Queensrÿche. Listen to "Take Hold of the Flame" live version from 1984. Mind blowing.

    Need to react to Rainbow's "Stargazer". One of the best rock songs ever; vocally and musically. Love anything Dio did. Although never got into his do-wop stuff; which is night and day different from his heavy rock stuff.

    I saw them on this tour when I was 15. I was a big fan of Rainbow and Black Sabbath at this time. I knew the album would be epic.

    New sub here. You had me at Dio. Toward the end of his life, Dio reunited with Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, and along with Vinny Apice on drums, formed the group Heaven and Hell, and performed many of the great Sabbath classics. I would encourage you to check out some of their live material, which gives you a window into how Ronnie's voice matured as he aged. I felt he developed an even deeper, richer tone, with his tessatura sitting a little lower than his younger years, but still maintaining that devastating power that he always possessed. One song in particular that he sang in H&H was "Children of the Sea". Originally recorded at a higher pitch on Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell album, Dio sings it live in a lower key, which I feel makes the song even more ominous and distopian. I don't have a link, but search here for Heaven and Hell - Children of the Sea Live, and it will pop up.

    You should listen to the cover of this done by the female fronted family band Liliac.
    Melody the front woman is a "female" Dio some would say.
    For someone in their early 20's she has amazing vocal abilities. The whole band is extremely talented. No one covers Dio like Liliac.

    At the time of recording, Ronnie Dio had already been a professional singer for over 20 years.

    You have GOT to check out Dio when he was with the band Rainbow, especially the video for the song "Stargazer" (readily available on TH-cam). If you want to see Ronnie putting on a vocal clinic, it's a must watch.

      The Stargazer video I've seen on youtube is fun to watch, but it is not a live performance of the song. It is cobbled together from live footage of Dio singing other songs with Rainbow, overdubbed with the studio track, and edited to make it appear that it is a live performance of the song. But it is not live performance footage of Stargazer, it's just a music video.

    Dio is absolutely the best singer I've heard live. If you choose to go down the Dio rabbit hole, I think you will find his vocal control amazing. There are many reactions and he was in many big bands. Rainbow, Sabbath, Dio to name a few.
    Everyone has an opinion and I think his Rainbow "On Stage" album is my personal favorite.

    ex : his tempo dragged - and yes , the "devil is never a maker " great line ....and the paralell for "us" - the less "that you give-youre a taker " ......great line on selfishness

    14:50 What do you mean by "pure heavy metal"? This is heavy metal in its purest form.
    If you're referring to that metal with screaming, growling, and downtuned guitars, these are the more extreme metal subgenres that emerged in the following years - which are not at all "the standard of heavy metal." But “Heaven and Hell" is.

    Fantastic reaction! I hope you feel better soon! I am very glad you and August enjoyed the movie! And your hair looks awesome! The color is very good on you. :) Yes, there is a ritardando at the beginning and also an accelerando toward the end. Well spotted! Also, I thought you had a great reaction to the excellent lyrics, which in my world are always a big part of the attraction in a song. (One of the reasons I never liked Steve Miller, haha!)

    • @2miciah
      @2miciah วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well... Miller and Sabbath are apples and oranges... But I understand completely where you're coming from, and I used to be in the same space, but give props where they're due. Check out the 1960s Miller before the 1970s hits - of course that's long before metal even existed. He was around a long time before "Fly Like an Eagle," which I wasn't into at the time because I thought it was too tame and mainstream. But eventually I came to relate to the vibe, which is what that song is all abouit. :)

    Can't wait for you to discover Diamanda Galas. I think she's the most intense and unique vocalist of the last 40 years. She's a soprano sfogato with incredible range and intensity. She can be challenging for new listeners, but to start I'd suggest her 2017 cover of "You Don't Know What Love Is", recorded when she was about 60. She seems to get stronger with age! Hello. I just came across your channel and I’m always up to see someone react to the incredible Ronnie James Dio. It’s good for you to have the studio version for reference and huge props to Mike for the song. However, in my opinion, for maximum appreciation, Dio should always be listened to live. It’s only live that you get to hear the full range of his nuances, color, texture, etc. The man puts expression on almost every word. His storytelling on stage is captivating. I’ve yet to hear a live version with Dio on vocals that didn’t blow away the studio version. Here’s the “Heaven and Hell” you should check out: th-cam.com/video/uWAhd4KkVUU/w-d-xo.html. I would love to watch you experience the song live, but even if you don’t do a reaction on your channel, if you enjoyed Dio, at least watch the performance for yourself off channel. Definitely check out his music with Rainbow - LIVE. :) And yes, playiing to a click track is not only over-rated, it is hobbling. Emotional music is not only meant to breath, it requires it. I trust you will enjoy your journey into one of the greatest vocalists of all time. I hope you feel better soon…

      I absolutely agree that Dio was a live artist foremost, as great as his performance was on the albums and it really was top notch, if you listened to him live in the same time period you would find quite a bit more edge and expressiveness, it really showed that he loved being on stage performing.

    • @2miciah
      @2miciah วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Stefan- Hey man. Absolutely agree with you. He was incredible on record, but next level live. In addition, he was always respectful to the fans and interacted with them as adults. I was fortunate to see him perform 5 or 6 times, and to meet him once. At every show there was no swearing or rock n roll BS. He interacted with the audience with appreciation, warmth, humor and intelligence. It's all in the clip I reference above. An amazing and appreciative talent and a class act.

      For those who don't know, Still I'm Sad is a cover of a Yardbirds tune. On the first Rainbow studio album it is performed as an instrumental. So be sure to check out the live version from "On Stage" to hear Dio sing the lyrics.
