Thanks this is great! I've started learning about ladders now that I've moved up to playing on 19x19. Well, there were no ladders in that game, but this is really good for me to learn now. This could save me from some real humiliation down the line!

Great video! I'm about 14kyu but I really enjoy all your beginners videos, they are so well done that I'm learning many things I previously overlooked from them :) Thanks a lot!

I've always wondered if ladder was a mistranslation. Looks like a staircase. 😃

It wasn't even a translation, the Japanese have a different word.

Thanks for the very nice video! Your explanations are clear and easy to follow. About reading where the ladder will end up, does a 9 Dan player like you see all the positions filled on the board? I am a beginner and all I manage to do is trace the zig-zag line the "hunted" stones are moving in. The picture immediately blurs when I try to follow the individual plays that make up the ladder.

Sometimes it helps if you focus on just one of the diagonals, say an outside diagonal that the chasing stones draw, and the relation between that diagonal and the shape will be the same at the destination.

I'm a beginner and I discovered this channel very recently and I'm amazed by how clear your explanations are, compared to other more popular channels. I feel like I understand the ladder's pattern pretty well by now, but there's still one question that I can't really find an answer for: how do I decide if a stone lying maybe on the other side of the board will be a ladder breaker or not? I understand that if it's standing directly on the path of the ladder it will eventually connect and break the ladder, but what about a stone placed one line to the side? Or two lines? Three lines? How "close" to the ladder path a distant stone should be for it to be considered a ladder breaker? Is there a way to understand at a glance if a distant stone will be a problem or not?

The chasing stones form 2 diagonals on each side, and one can visualize these to see where they end up on another side of the board. The zigzag inside of the diagonals is filled by the chased stones. If one of the diagonals touches a stone of the other color, the chased stones will probably put them in atari. Maybe you could practice on smaller boards first.
