I was fortunate to see them on this tour when it came to Berkeley. It was outside, under the stars, and yes hypnotic. The joy, funk and groovin’ coming from everyone onstage spilled out over us the audience. For the whole show, everyone was up and dancing. The experience felt so intimate, like the band members were our buddies inviting us too into their world of play❤
We lived in 4 unit condo. ( big old house) my neighbor the biker one night was blaring this from his huge stereo at 2 am. Woke everyone up. My wife says go over there and tell him to turn it down, so I go, knock on the door but he can’t here me. I can hear him and his wife wooting and hollering, doors open so I walk in. He looks really high so I’m yelling turn it down. He can’t hear me and goes and turns it up and his wife grabs me and starts dancing. Then he hand me the mirror , so I think wth. Can’t beat em join em. My wife comes in and sees us jumping around the room and gets really mad but the music is so loud I can’t hear what she’s saying. So he hands her the mirror and she starts grooving then the yuppies from upstairs come down and the same thing happens. Ends up with eight people jumping around in their bathrobes having a blast. This concert has that mojo.
Those erratic dance moves and the phrasing are what make David Byrne what he is. Can you imagine being in the studio with him. “Alright, I have some music and lyrics I’ve put together but I wanna hear something that makes me dance like this”. Lol. Talking Heads are so damn amazing.
I just love how happy this makes you. I grew up with this and David Byrne was a friend of a friend and was my absolute idol in music. When Stop Making Sense came out I was still pretty young but went to see it in a beautiful old classic theater. I had never heard of a 'concert movie' or anything like it, so when the teenagers started dancing in front of the front row I was blown away like I had just taken mushrooms for the first time. I egged my friend on but he wouldn't dance, but I sure as hell did. People danced in the front row from beginning to end and it was one of my happiest memories that year. Surprisingly I didn't go into rock, but stuck with classical (piano), traditional (Hammered Dulcimer), and archaic (Japanese Flute), but the Talking Heads make this era in contemporary music survivable for my wee self. It was so incredible we lasted years on this show alone.
The "camerman getting a piece" was the film's director, Jonathean Demme, taking a cameo. My favorite Talking Heads song . . . . their line-up on this tour was insane. Lot's of P-Funk alumni in addition to Bernie and Adrain Belew from King Crimson! They were much more than an art pop act at this point.
Honestly, I've become such a fan of this channel! If not for your genuine reactions and teaching. The diversity in music we get to experience! Dude, this is incredible!
He's still writing, rocking out, and dancing too! We saw American Utopia last year in NYC, and a month before that we saw the impressive cover band at a small venue. They both helped us get through this year for sure!
8:33 where Byrne sings "Nothing is better than this." Rather than the descending Dminor scale from the 5th (A-G-F-E-D-C-D), he does a pure blues line, C-C-C-C-C-C-D. You can tell that he and Ocasek came from the same planet, wherever that was. I've prolly watched this movie a dozen times and never noticed that. Thank you.
Alex Weir, did a phenomenal job in this show. He’s a fantastic example of someone playing the rhythm guitar in a “lead” sort of way. His guitar work on Burning Down the House was also great.
This and the last waltz are the two best concert dvds of all time. To be completely honest, the first time I ever watched this show I was in college and on mushrooms and I was instantly in love with talking heads! David Byrne is a genius.. and that is why he is in the rock and roll hall of fame. Simply brilliant.
I was there!!! I LOVE your enthusiasm, I think you’re the happiest reactor / teacher I’ve seen lol. I don’t play any instruments, but I seriously appreciate someone who’s knowledgeable breaking it down like you do! I’m in. I’ll watch more. Cheers!
This concert was and still is the best live show I've ever been to. I believe it was the Hollywood Paladium, when David came out alone with the tape player, I thought this was going to be a boring concert. Then they started to move the group in one at a time. The energy they put out was contagious, soon you saw the whole place was moving along (no drugs that night). It's a must see video, if only to see David and his big suit, you'll come away with the thought "I wish I could have gone".
YES!! This is the BEST!! Why did it take so long for this video to come along in my suggested videos feed?! Basically, the expression on your face, from beginning to end... of pure ecstatic joy and pleasure... is the expression I have whenever I listen to Talking Heads. Thank you SO MUCH for this delightful, blissful, and informative take on this song and performance. MORE Talking Heads, please. (And more Tori Amos, too)
I first heard this song when I was 16, I’m now 53 ! I still love Talking Heads music & have it on vinyl, this music is timeless. I’m so glad younger people today appreciate their music, my 26 year old son now does 💕 ps I just found your channel tonight & subscribed
This whole concert, I watched it later as I wasn't even born during this but, It blew me away and realized the layering that goes in on TH's songs is unreal. "This Must Be the Place" is my favorite song of all time. A song you should look at for sure.
I saw the movie at the local artsy fartsy theater in town. It was full and everybody was standing up and grooving through the whole thing like the Talking Heads were actually playing in front of them.
Thank you Michael. Obviously I’ve heard talking heads as a kid but I’ve never bothered to look at them as someone with a more developed ear for music. This song has made me put them in my Spotify library to have a deeper listen to all their stuff. Also it’s so cool to see someone who just really loves music. ❤️
Talking Heads songs makes for great jam songs with friends because of the rock solid rhythms. Life During Wartime is my favorite song to play with other musicians.
Talking Heads 4 life 👏🏼🍺🔨 Randomly found your Vids on TH-cam, liking them alot🤲🏻👍🏼 I am a Musician from Berlin/Germany sending a Rock on and Stay Safe! Peace

Talking Heads were genius at their prime. That great combination of excellent musicianship, tension between band members and cocaine made for a great mix.
By far one of THE gigs I have ever seen. I walked out of the Pacific Amphitheater the summer of ‘83 saying to myself “I can not believe that just happened “
I had the pleasure of seeing them on this tour and the previous one at Red Rocks. The first one I was 3rd row and I remember Tina having a really cute baby belly making her bass stick way out. They were soooo tight and you're right about Bernie, Michael! Fricken' amazing.
Found your channel about a month ago and have been binge watching since! As an intermediate player that is trying to learn more theory, just listening to you talk the lingo allows me to make connections and memorize things better than learning on my own. Just want to say thank you. And if there is one song I would love to hear you do is Wake The Dead by Praxis. This was one of the first finger picking songs I learned and it has lead me to a world of finger style guitar. Unfortunately I had an accident that left my picking hand a little disabled, but that doesn't stop me from playing! Keep up the great work man!
Saw this concert film in a little, local, artsy movie house when it was first released. Mesmerized. Went back and saw it five more times! Best movie money I ever spent. Years later, I talked about it so much my husband bought the DVD for my birthday so he could see what I was going on about. Listen to Michaelsan. Go watch it! Just go watch it!
There's a TH-cam video where Byrne talks about being on the autism spectrum (what used to be called Asperger's, "high functioning"). Folks on the spectrum often take things very literally, and they need to work out stuff they find perplexing, that other people take for granted. It helps explain a lot about how he interacts with people and looks at the world.
Best reaction ever! I act like that every time I listen to talking heads! Like, they had no business adding things where they did, but it worked! Most of the songs on the Police’s, Ghost in the machine nave no changes. Just vocal and harmony changes. Check it out.
David Byrne was and still is a multimedia genius. To surround and enhance the Talking Heads experience with guys like Bernie Worrell and Alex Weir was a stroke of musical genius. I had my "Stop Making Sense" VCR tape stolen at a party after playing it for the guests. Later when it became available on DVD I bought that, as well as the vinyl soundtrack. Can't get enough Heads!
Saw this tour, at Meriweather Post Pavilion, in MD. I went ALONE, couldn’t talk any friends into going with me. Weren’t they kicking themselves when the movie came out, lol. LOVE the Heads.
Love to see the keys getting love!! I've played keys for 18 years, but your videos inspired me to start learning guitar. Thank you Michael. Maybe this video will inspire someone to learn keys!!!!
Jerry Harrison is also playing keys in this song, watch the entire concert closely... Jerry takes synth solos too. You'd be surprised to learn which one's he's playing.
That’s him soloing on this song actually. It’s in the liner notes that he took the synth solo and loved the crazy line Bernie was playing underneath it
Used to be on full dance floors and then watch this in the after party at someone’s house , when this was first released , and then it drifted out my life . Now I’m reliving it with realtors and living it .
Used to dance to this with my daughters in the living room cranking it through a pair of old Polk Audio speakers. So much fun. Then the three of them surprised me by playing this at the oldest’ s wedding reception and the four of us got out on the dance floor and rocked it. Great concert movie. Thanks.
Had the great fortune of seeing this Tour at Binghamton University. Got there very early, got very close (GA on the floor) and was blown away by how friggin great they were, they rocked that place hard, it was a Saturday night right around this time of year, one of those concerts that you get home and you can't sleep cause you are so wired from the energy of the performance. Great memories. Awesome video, loved the analysis as always.
Bernie on the keys! Yes! Yes! Yes! I saw this band twice live in concert and it was clear from my experience of what I was seeing and hearing that Bernie Worrell was driving the band. It's his grooves, pulses, and feels we're hearing. Great striker is right. This should be called the Byrne/Worrell Band. Bernie's so brave and unique. No one plays like he does.
In college, this was our weekend pregame ritual before hitting the bars or parties. There would be like 10 people sitting and grooving, and like 10 people in the middle of the living room just getting funky. Sometimes we skipped a few songs to make sure we got to Girlfriend, Crosseyed and Cities
Unfortunately, I was too young to get the chance to see the Talking Heads live, but there is a great funk band out of Denver called The Motet. They used to do a run of shows (still may but I haven't lived in the Denver area for about 4 years now) over Halloween where they covered a band or a year of music. In 2008 (?) they did The Talking Heads and to this day it is still one of the most fun shows I have ever been to. So, I may have never gotten to see the Talking Heads but at least I got to experience something close.
Go see David Byrne next time he tours! Also Turkuaz is touring with Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew for remain in light 40th anniversary, postponed until after covid obviously
I had been to a lot of cooncerts, but in 83 I went to the The Pantages in Hollywood. I have to say that when they put on a show, THEY PUT ON A SHOW! This was rated by Rolling Stone as best concert ever filmed. That's in part to Jonathan Demme, but they had the whole crowd on their feet throughout the entire concert, and we weren't even on any hallucinating chemicals. This concert was seeing the antics and high power of the band, that none were needed. They actually had fun doing their sets. I doubt that I'll ever get to see another concert like I did that one night in 1983.
I've never seen your channel before. This is the best reaction I have seen to this song. Which is funny cuz it's not a first time reaction. Maybe that is the secret. Your's has got more analysis than first timers can do.
I actually saw this show at Forest Hills tennis stadium. It was even more amazing live at least 6-8 songs were cut from the film. I was in high school and had an uncle who lived in NYC. I grew up in Scranton Pa.during High school 81-83 I would spend a few weeks in the city every summer. That weekend I saw the Heads on Friday and Asia on Saturday.During those trips one week I saw Queen,King Crimson and Jon Anderson. The good old days. Just a few years ago I saw NIN and the start of the show was absolutely a tribute to the film!
Top notch analysis & am with you all the way. This comes from wacko artist ideas made real. Not knocking small town music but this stuff is unmistakably urban. Audiences love it everywhere but especially in big urbanized cultural hubs, Berlin, New York,Tokyo, Paris. Definitely takes more than a campy over-sized suit to do that!
yeah this is how you do a centerpiece song in a solid set, probably my favorite thing among all their work L'Imperatrice did pretty well too with Vacances on their Paris 2020 concert, even without an actual crowd to play
This whole concert is incredible. Put it on at a party, or for anyone. You'll realize no one dislikes the Talking Heads.
Hey, yeah. I'm gonna need an invite to these parties, dude.
Saw David Byrne a couple years ago at Red Rocks and he has not missed a beat. It was a true “show” and not a concert!
Lots of people dont like them
@@BuddhaJesusSoul way to be a turd, man.
@@pasqualecurry7773 lol no but I love them but just know many people who dont
The thing I always appreciated with the band was how busy their songs are live. And everyone is in the groove. Almost becomes hypnotic.
100% ACCURATE

I saw that show in New Orleans.. It was exactly like the film. Amazing
Stop Making Sense is absolutely timeless. I can't believe I hadn't listened to Talking Heads until the other day.... I'm absolutely hooked.
We lived in 4 unit condo. ( big old house) my neighbor the biker one night was blaring this from his huge stereo at 2 am. Woke everyone up. What a rollercoaster of a story
Lmao that should be in a movie
That was the best anecdote I ever got to read about "Stop Making Sense" ! Yeah it definitely has THAT kind of vibe !
That's so great. Did that happen in the 80's?
Haha! Hands her the mirror!
I remember seeing them live. The two backup singers energy was infectious. They just extruded energy and positivity.
This D minor vamp is an unstoppable groove that takes over your body and mind and I love it.

Yes! David Byrne is a wild one. He and Talking Heads are a lot of fun.
Strange bird........I met David Byrne on stage before a show in Chicago probably 15 years or so ago (I was working for Poi Dog Pondering, who opened for David that night). My crew and I were wrapping up our backline, taping/striking our upstage gear when DB walked out onto the stage to check out the set up. I said hello, said that it was an honor to meet him, and asked how he was doing. He said that he had just come from Milwaukee and that he found it strange to find out that he couldn't get a tour of the Old Milwaukee Brewery because the brewery wasn't in Milwaukee. Something like, "Why would Old Milwaukee Brewery not be in Milwaukee?" I'm guessing he was just being silly, but the way he delivered his "concern" over this conundrum is something that I'll never forget and frankly, seemed just exactly perfect coming from him.
I loved Poi Dog Pondering!
There's a TH-cam video where Byrne talks about being on the autism spectrum (what used to be called Asperger's, "high functioning"). Man thanks for this vids. This is how I find new music to listen to. And the guitar breakdown as well. This is epic
I was blessed to see them at Blossom on this tour. Mind blowing
Super happy I found this channel. You're covering a lot of my faves.
Just saw this movie for the first time and i like the heads a lot more now
I had been to a lot of cooncerts, but in 83 I went to the The Pantages in Hollywood.
You sir, are very very lucky. And I’m very very jealous!
Best concert ever
Fine, I guess I'll just have to go watch Stop Making Sense all the way through again now. Thanks a lot Mr. Palmasano 🙄
All of this was extremely fun to watch. Thanks 😊
Looked up the chords this track, saw the Micahel video, had to click. What an excellent track, so funky, great guitar.
Few songs put a smile on my face and a skip in my step the way this one does, great stuff as always!
I was there. Really was an incredible show.
Been waiting for the Talking Heads - Nice!!
Your knowledge of music is excellent.
love seeing you watching things you know and like just like tool. Please make a reaction to the whole film. so much stuff
yeah this is how you do a centerpiece song in a solid set, probably my favorite thing among all their work
L'Imperatrice did pretty well too with Vacances on their Paris 2020 concert, even without an actual crowd to play
