Fragging My Favorite Coral - The Weeping Willow Toadstool

  • I did it. I fragged the Weeping Willow leather coral I purchased early 2019. Why? It was getting too large for the frag tank. Truth be told, I just need a larger frag system but that’s another video for another day. I also wanted to spread the love in our local STL reefing community. To my surprise I was able to get 13 frags out of this piece!
    While the mother colony recovers, it seems the frags are doing really well! I am going to keep 3 of these frags to grow out in my tanks. Redundancy is never a bad thing when keeping and fragging coral. Maybe I’ll do a giveaway for one? Let me know in the comments!

      Right!? It's pretty much back to it's full glory now. The polyps on the edge aren't quite as long yet but it's getting there. The clownfish do a good job of pissing it off all day so that doesn't help either.

    I want a frag! Do you ship to Florida? I had a toadstool that woulnt open and was hard to the touch! Wouldnt that mean it was dead? A lady that sells toadstools said no that if it were it would turn to mush! I cant see how that is true with all that mucous! Even when you touched them stem to move it back in I could see how slimy and soft it looked but mine was hard! I felt bad after she told me that because I threw it in th e garbage and I loved that toadstool!

    • @BahamaLlamaCoral
      @BahamaLlamaCoral  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      She is right. If it were dead it would decay and turn into much. I've had the smallest speck of toadstool tissue on a rock turn into a full grown animal. Sometimes toads get a bit fussy and will close up for weeks. They are still alive though. They also close to shed.

With all tentacles retracted it’s head is pretty green. Under blues the tentacles are pale to pink with slightly green tips. I think it is Indonesian. The other neon green tentacled weeping willow is I think from Japan.

    When doing a large toadstool, keep momma in a large bin with water from the tank, she me carbon, a heater and pump for flow. Keep there for a few days to begin healing, because it’s release of toxins when hurt by fragging, can do a job on your tank. Leave frags on a bed of rubble rock, in a deep Pyrex dish. 2-3 weeks they all will be attached.

    • @BahamaLlamaCoral
      @BahamaLlamaCoral  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you ever been on the receiving end of toxins affecting corals? People talk about that all the time but I’ve never actually see evidence. It’s been in the tank since that night... 🤞

    • @atfinthehouse8631
      @atfinthehouse8631 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. With toadstool, devils hand, crown leather and Palys. Best to give them time to settle down and heal a little first. Why take chance of killing your tank of corals and fish. Definitely run fresh carbon right after. The larger the coral the greater the risk.
