We were in the Windjammer on Liberty of the Seas. I was preparing to get a hamburger for lunch when a boy of about 8 in front of me in line turned to me and said, “Ma’am? That’s my mom over there with my little sisters. She said I should ask someone to help me get a burger. Could you help me, please?” I looked & saw his mom sitting with a baby and a toddler and he waved, and pointed to me. I waved back to her. I told him of course I’d help. He talked me through everything he wanted...burger with a bun, cheese, and pickles on the side. He held his plate for me, as I used the tongs to get his food. When I’d put the burger things on his plate, he looked up at me and smiled, and said, “Thank you so much, ma’am,” and returned to the table where his mom & sisters were. I count that as a win! The kid got his burger without touching the tray of food, AND he was polite.

  • @HAL_NINER_TRIPLE_ZERO

If you are seating between 7:30 and 9:00 you seat and serve anyone who shows up between those hours. If you goal is to close at 9 then you tell people they have to be seated no later than X (8:15 or 8:30 or whatever). As one who has worked at both restaurants and retail - sometimes you have to deal with the Johnny Come-Lately's unless you specifically state that admittance or seating must occur at some period prior to your closing time. This is why bars (which generally have to close by a certain time by law) have last call. So no sympathy from me on that issue.

The biggest complaint should be parents who do not supervise their children and allow them to do what ever they want, when ever they want, the entire cruise. I was on Oasis of The Seas and on the sea day, I went to the buffet with the intention of having a hot dog with all the fixings. So, I got a plate and stood on line with a 9/10 year old boy in front of me. He started to take the hot dogs off the rack with the tongs and kept putting more and more on his plate until he had to reach all the way in the back of the rack to get the last few and sure enough, his loaded plate tilted and all the hot dogs fell on the floor. The boy then picked them up with his hands, put them back on the rack and walked away. I got the buffet people to immediately close down that area and throw out all the hot dogs! Needless to say, I did not get a hot dog and completely lost my appetite for having one the rest of the cruise!

Myself and another man corralled the boy and when his mother finally showed up, the first words out of her mouth were "how dare you put your hands on my child". One thing that bugs the sh*t out of me are passengers who can't manage a simple thank you when a waiter brings them something - a drink, extra butter, a fork to replace the one you knocked on the floor reaching for another roll...etc. Or - stopping a crew member to ask for information - where's the Lido deck or how do I get to the stuff my face ice cream bar? When cruising, I set my clock to ship time (duh), and set an alarm ⏰. Whatever time they say be back, my alarm goes off THREE hours before. That gives me one hour to finish whatever I'm doing and get back because I insist on being on the ship 2 hours before the cut off time. Even the excursions I book are in the morning so that I'm back early. There is no way I'd do anything to ruin my vacation or that of others. 🛳

The world is full of selfish and ignorant people, and some of them go on cruises. However, there are also some cruising "good citizens," I I always try to be one. I have peaked into rooms where my steward was working and seen the disasters. I try to leave things semi-tidy because I feel for that poor steward. One of my pet peeves is the person who grills the poor waitstaff about what's in the food and then asks for something impossible. "Does the pasta sauce contain garlic? Can I get it without garlic? " Then they get all offended when the waiter says no.

So I put all the towels in easy access in the bathroom in one spot and tidy the room so anyone can walk around without stepping or having to walk around anything. I also clean off the counters, which is usually full of my make up, perfume etc. and I put our luggage under the beds too and keep them there till we need to pack again. I also make sure all of our valuables are locked up and safe.
It all takes about ten minutes if that. Drives my hubby buggy in a good natured way, and I have the safe of mind that our man doesn’t think we live like slobs, and I’m able to make his job easier than some of the other rooms. I do this in hotel rooms too. I think o got this from my Mom. 😊

I have one to add. Now, don''t get me wrong, I am well aware that there are people who genuinely need those motorized scooters, but if they do need them, they need to know how to drive it. I was on a cruise in April and those things were everywhere. I think there was some sort of convention on scooter riders. 😁 I, watched them plow onto elevators that were already half full ad then the family had to get on too. I stand with my feet turned inward to save my toes. I was not so lucky on this last cruise. There were 3 of us on the elevator, two of walking and one lady who came into the elevator and I thought she and her scooter were going to go out the backside of the elevator. Seems the two ladies were friends. They got to their floor and the "walking" lady got off the elevator and the other lady sat there. The lady began to yell for her to get off the elevator and she did not seem to know how to drive it and the door began to close. Being the nice person I am, I leaned forward and held the door for her to get off and she promptly ran over the back of my sandal and up over the side of my ankle as I am yelling for her to stop that she is running over me. The other lady was yelling at her also and was so angry with her and all this lady on the scooter said was "sorry" and drove away, but the other lady checked on me. If she had not stopped she would have broken my ankle because my foot was turned over som far from the wheel.
As it was, my ankle was swollen for a couple of days, but I was OK. I also agree with you on the other things. I too made a few comments to people, like it or not, about the tongs were there for a reason. That they do not work on command, you have to pick them up.

Regarding buffets - I generally try to avoid them mostly because the food quality sucks. But I also am wigged out by people who touch the food with their hands. While I've never done this on a cruise ship, I have done this in hotels that have breakfast buffets or lines:
I see someone pawing through the bread with their hands and they place one or two slices on their plates. I will reach over and grab the slices off their plates, rub my fingers over the slices and then place them back on their plate. and tell them "Yep, good choice!".

Here's what I learned to do: Take the napkin (paper one, if it's there) and use that to handle the tongs. If there aren't any, then go to the rest room FIRST before you visit the buffet area and get a paper towel from the dispenser and use that (not all rest rooms aboard the ship have those Dyson air dryers ONLY; most also have the paper towel dispensers), or--better than nothing--a few sheets of clean toilet paper.
Stops me from worrying who did not wash their hands after the rest room, who has a cold\the flu\Norovirus\Herpes\a coughing spell into their hands\sneezed into their hands\dropped the tongs and then put them back into the food area\picked at the food with their hands\picked their nose before they stood in the buffet line...and so on.

I am so appalled with certain people who for some reason refuse to wash their hands after using the wash room. They show a total lack of consideration for others.
A few years ago I was a passenger on one of the Princess cruises running out from Fremantle to SE Asia. On our return to Fremantle a number of passengers had come down with quite a severe stomach illness. So much so, that on the next cruise, passengers were not permitted to use the serving tongs in the buffet area and instead the staff members had to do the serving of the food beverages. 😡

My buffet pet peeve that I have is NO TONGS at a food item station (dinner roll is the worst offender). I have found that if you give your steward or room service a call AFTER you are done eating, they are more than happy to come and collect the dishware (cart if you ordered room service). If I have a "Be back on board time", I always subtract 30 minutes (If it 5:00 PM I want to be on that dock by 4:30 PM - ship time) as everyone must go through screening and that takes time in itself.

Just one thing to add: I've worked in the food service industry, years ago, and posted closing times can be an oddity. I have managed restaurants with a 9PM closing time and the meaning of that time can be one of two things. For some restaurants, that can mean one can walk in until almost 9PM and not incur that wrath of the wait staff, because that's just how it is there. For others, one would get the "hairy eyeball" walking in at 8:30 with a 9PM closing time. Unsure about how the ships handle that. Probably best to ask, in the interest of not being troublesome to already tired dining room personnel.

Regarding people arriving late for dinner: When I was on Celebrity last year, there was a notice to everyone that anyone arriving 15 minutes past their dining time will not be seated. I forgot the exact wording but I was glad to see that. Workers want to finish up for the day too. Some people are just rude! I agree about people at muster drill. I have told people to shut up! Another issue I have is people that are just unconsiderate of others. I have a disability with my back & I cannot stand for periods of time. I went to a muster drill in a lounge & there was no seating except a couch that should accomodate 4 people. 2 people were seated with their legs propped up. I politely asked if I may sit down. 1 man was nearly passed out drunk & ignored me. The other was a nasty old crotchety man who said there was no room. I asked a staff member to assist me & i pointed out the couch. Crew member told drunk man to sit up so others can sit & told old crotchety man to "move over". I swear, I do not know why people are so rude. Its like they have an attutude that because they paid for the cruise they can act any way they choose & screw everybody else. From saving chairs at the pool to saving seats at the shows, these people need to be reported to a staff member.

Finally, yeah, I was at a fancy (4-star) restaurant one trip to Las Vegas when a very loud couple arrived 10 minutes before closing, saw that the velvet rope was up (this was inside a fine dining casino restaurant) so they dropped the rope and yelled loudly at the host when they wouldn't be seated!
