  • Today, I'm joined by Laine and my brother Kevin and we're doing some coin roll hunting!
    Coin Roll Hunting is a hobby that involves going to banks and credit unions and asking for rolls of coins. You might ask for pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves or dollar coins, and you purchase them for face value. Once you have the coin rolls, you open them up and search for valuable and collectible coins. Everyone who coin roll hunts is looking for something different depending on what they find to be special or unique in a coin. Once you have finished searching through your rolls, you simply bring what's left back to a DIFFERENT bank or credit union (to ensure that you aren't searching the same coins over and over again) and receive your money back. So, it doesn't cost anything and it's a great way to pass the time when the ground is too frozen to metal detect!

    Like the video but you need to ask for bank rolled coins. Those were all privately rolled which means they were probably gone through for anything that wasn't needed by the person before you. Good Luck. Laine is cute!

    I discovered this video through your Treasurenet post, and I must say, you did a great job here. From my point of view, coin roll hunting is not about making money, but looking through coins every now and then just for fun. If anyone tries to criticize you just for uploading videos (which I think are really entertaining to watch), please don't take it personally, just do whatever makes you happy. I've observed that people who are VERY deep into a hobby take it more seriously than most people, and I have seen some people post their finds on coin forums and not sound excited about it. In my opinion, that takes away the fun of everything and makes this hobby seem more like a chore.
    All in all, my advice would be, if uploading these videos makes you happy, keep uploading them. Just remember the basic CRH etiquette of returning coins to a different bank than you picked up at, and have fun!

      +Yoshi the Railfanner I couldn't agree more. I would argue that the best part about hobbies like coin roll hunting and metal detecting is sharing the experience with others. Here's an example: I have never found silver while metal detecting and my best find would probably be my first and only buffalo nickel. But i still love to do it because I am joined by my brother and friends that I can share the finds and experience with. For those guys that are keeping their finds to themselves, I don't see much fun to be had.
      Oh and btw, I fixed the video description (by popular demand).
      Good luck and happy hunting my friend!

    • @DoubleGG5666
      @DoubleGG5666 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ThreeDotNaught There's the saying that friends are more important than money, and that's precisely what you're living by. I honestly believe that if you are generous with your finds from CRH and metal detecting, it will pay you back at some point. Take this for example: My cousin and I went through his change jar and after putting the keepers aside, my cousin said he was wondering if it was possible to find a silver quarter in circulation. I told him I would look out for one, and believe it or not, I actually found one at work, which I immediately swapped out and gave to my cousin the last time I saw him.
      Well earlier this month, I found silver at work again, and this time around, it consisted of SIX silver quarters and 15 dimes ranging from 1946-1964. I feel like that score was my reward for being generous with the interesting things I've found.
      The point being: it's more important to do your hobbies with friends rather than alone, because it's more fun that way.

    FYI - They arent called "plain" the ones with no mint mark are from the Philadelphia mint. 1942-1945 with mint mark on the back for nickels are the silver ones. on the post 1937 Jeffersons you should keep an eye out for 1938D, 1939 double die, 1939D, 1942 D over D, 1943 double eye, 1945 double die, 1949 D over S, 1950D, 1954 S over D, 1955 D over S, 1994P, 1997P. As for the question about the IKES, you most likely have clad ones. the way to figure it out is to weigh them. a part silver one will weigh about 24.59 grams while a normal clad will weigh 22.68 grams or a little less. So if you have one that weighs in at 23 grams or more, its probably silver. Hope this post helps you out and welcome to CRH, it not just for fun, its an addiction!

      +zwowzers I keep any nickel from before 1964 so you can bet that I'll be looking for all of the dates you just listed. But...what's so special about 94P and 97P? And I've concluded that none of my ikes were silver...I still love them :D

    .hey 3.0..nice vid and nice to see ya getting into coin roll hunting..just a tip on the ikes the easiest way to tell if you got silver is if it has an s mintmark and is not a proof because proof has nickel clad and silver clad..also the silver ikes were from '71 - '76..btw, always double check any that might have varieties because someone may have just cashed in an entire roll of all '71d..i find things like that alot..hope this helps and as always happy hunting...

      +ThreeDotNaught hey 3.0..i too am having a hard time finding ikes anymore..one of my banks had some $500 bags at their processing center and i cleaned them out..you just have to check with different banks and ask them if they can order ikes and if the bank has a processing center often they have coins sitting around and most of the time the banks are glad to get rid of them..also check for halves..my bank still can get the $500 box so i order as often as i can..hope this helps and as always happy hunitng...

  • @PatriotCoinRings
    @PatriotCoinRings 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Okay, I have to ask. I went to 7 banks in 3 cities near me none of which even had half dollar coins so I put in a request for a $500 box lot and after about a 2 week wait my bank finally called me to say they had my shipment. Sad to say every single coin roll was already marked from the outside "Laughlin Nevada 2011" and sure enough, that was exactly what every half dollar was. Not even a date variation so apparently the box made it from a casino I'm guessing. I tried BofA, Citibank, Chase, and Wells Fargo. I also tried leaving an upper class area I live in for a lower income class location (no disrespect) thinking that maybe there were a bunch of random half dollars circulating in a different economical territory and still, nothing. I've since attempted five (5) more cases and in each instance, I only got new coins with not one silver in the lot.
    In short, do you as a professional coin hunter or any other coin hunter reading this have a suggestion to help me out in my quest to start this hobby? So far I'm not finding crap. I'd really love to hear from you guys who have the real tips and tricks of the trade and if you don't want to post it here, please email me direct. Thanks

    • @QuinsCoins
      @QuinsCoins  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well let me start by saying that I am by no means an expert at coin roll hunting. I'm flattered you say that though! From my understanding, coin roll hunting can be a very different game depending on where you live. I have heard that if you're looking to get into the hobby in the California area, you can just forget about it because it's all dried up over there. It's a shame...but it's reality. But do you mean to tell me that you got an entire box of 2011 half dollars? That's something I've never heard of! Any half dollar minted after 2002 is not intended for circulation, so I'm not sure how this could happen! Anyway, if you want to get some quality information on this subject, check out the treasure net coin roll hunting forum. I'll link it here for you so you can check it out: bit.ly/29B8vNA
      Let me know how it goes for you and happy hunting!

    • @PatriotCoinRings
      @PatriotCoinRings 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a noob so maybe I'm wrong, I swear It was 2011 but what ever it was, it was actually hand written on the side of the coin paper roll of every single roll so apparently, someone took the time to separate, organize, and roll them all back up. As for Laughlin, I don't know what that meant other than they may have come from a Laughlin, NV casino? but just a guess. I'm going to try a few more times and try to pick out different regions but it appears no matter what I do I have to special order the $500 cases because thus far I can't find a bank that would have more than maybe one single roll in the whole bank :(

    • @numberonesongs4444
      @numberonesongs4444 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael Baker, it is a lot different now than a few years ago. In the late 80's and early 90's I did go through many rolled coins and did fine many good coins that way. Silver was not that hard to find then and I do remember trying to find "full step nickles" and replacing coins in my books with better looking ones. One time I did find a whole roll of wheats. But now it would be hard to find one. I say just keep looking and you will find some, happy hunting.

    • @PatriotCoinRings
      @PatriotCoinRings 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +numberonesongs4444 Much appreciated. In fact, I've gotten up to buying $3,000 a week worth of halves now and have what I feel is a really good system down. I have 5 banks where I consistently order the $500 cases from and will order 1-2 from each bank each week. Sometimes I get skunked but other times I really come up nice! I'm actually "known"...lol by the bank managers now and out of both courtesy to the banks (plus I was already warned by one bank that if I returned the coins to them, I would be restricted to no more than one case per month) and so as to not put the same coins back through the same circulation of coins I sift, I opened another bank account for free under my sons name because he is 16 years old. No monthly, annual or other fees for someone under 18 and I did this at a bank called EastWest bank here in California which is an Asian bank. They have almost nothing to do with halves and said they can't even order them back to cash (1 Banking system for converting coin to cash and 5 banks for ordering weekly box lots).
      I since have collected a lot of silver and a few really nice ones. In fact, I have a spread sheet on all the coins I now have to resell or to help me find when someone wants a coin ring (the main reason I got into this is because I make coin rings) and I now have 554 Pre-1964 90% Silvers. Liberties, Morgans, Freedoms, and even picked up on Silver Eagle and a 1893 from one of the bank managers who said they had some "Big old dollar coins" and wanted to know if I wanted to pick them up. I'm totally set up for my coin making hobby and have since slowed down on coin roll hunting but yes, it does work.
      Get in good with bankers and tellers, they will call you when loose coins come in on top of your box orders if you are nice with them! I had one call one day that a guy just brought in $175 worth of halves and what looked like old coin dollars and knowing I collected, they asked if I wanted them? I flew out there and it was literally the biggest treasure I've ever seen! Every coin was silver pre 64' and I was just blown away! I brought back two $25 gift certificates for a local restaurant and gave one to the bank manager, and the other to the teller (I totally made out HUGE even if I just resold them on ebay on that one).
      Thanks for the help - It's been fun.

    I've been coin roll hunting for DECADES ( im quite a lot older than you) back in the early 1980's and up into the mid 1990's silver could be found in just about EVERY roll of half dollars sometimes an ENTIRE roll of halves were 40%ers I stopped looking for a long time I had so much of it ... recently in the last year I got interested in it again and ordered $1,000 in halves ..I went through the entire box and guess what I found ...1...ONE silver half in the ENTIRE BOX ...a GORGEOUS 1964 half, looked like it had just been struck ( the one your looking for ) 😂😂😂 .... I also found a few NIFC halves ..it was a bit disappointing...but it is what it is, and at least i found something.
