Lots of cute little D&D-isms in this movie: during the final fight scene at the end there with the wizard, you'll notice that nobody attacks at the same time; everyone actually goes in a rotation order like you would in a regular d&d fight. I haven't timed it but it looks like the entire section is around 6 seconds of movement (the time it takes for everyone in a fight to get a turn in)

fun thing to note about this movie, this is pretty accurate to how actual D&D campaigns go... people do rediculous things, have wierd names, cause accidental shennanigans by doing something as simple as trying to cast a spell which may or may not cause them to become convicts or wanted criminals...
also among D&D based movies, this is literally the best one.

Also the mundane item that is suddenly identified as a magic item that could potentially save the game after one character does something stupid that could prevent any and all progress being made in the story (like accidentally destroying the only bridge across a chasm then suddenly discovering a "hither thither" staff moments later -- that's called a DM deux ex machina ... super real to actual gameplay).

Simon is a wild magic sorcerer. That magic spin wheel thing is a representation of the best known mechanic of that class. Every time he casts a spell, there is a percentage chance that the spell goes wrong and, rather than failing, it becomes randomly uncontrollable. In the case at the tavern, he was trying cast a shield spell, and instead reversed gravity. Super fun mechanic, if at times frustrating. A character of mine died in a DnD session when a sorcerer who supposed to be casting Slow on an enemy made a bad roll and instead cast Fireball at me and the Cleric. The whole campaign sort of derailed from there.

15:19 those are called rust monsters, and they eat metal. The panther with the tentacles is called a displacer beast, they use illusions to distract both predators and prey alike, as we see in the movie, however it's always a pair of illusion beasts in gameplay rather than one at a time.
The intellect devourers and gelatinous cube are pretty on point.
Lastly, the fat dragon Themberchaud, which actually has a pretty interesting backstory that I recommend looking up on your own time. I could give the short version but I'd be giving it a terrible disservice if I did.
    Also classes:
    Holga: Barbarian (very strong berserker)
Edgin: Bard. Interestingly, the lute is enchanted.
Simon: Sorcerer (wizards study, sorcerers inherit and warlocks make deals). Wild Mage (magic that is extremely difficult to control. You can accidentally turn yourself into a potted plant while trying to cast Fireball if you are really unlucky).
Doric: Druid. Very good at nature based magic. An interesting detail about Doric is that her development is covered in a prequel novel, hence why she goes through so little here.
Xenk: Paladin (a melee focused character that has (usually) holy powers from their oath to a particular god or concept).
Sofina: Wizard (when it comes to magic, Wizards study for it, sorcerers get it from bloodline, warlocks make deals).
    Not in the party:
Ranger (tracking expert and really good archers)
Fighter (melee jack of all trades)
    Monk (martial artist archetype)
Rogue unless you count Forge or Kira as one (thieves, assassins, anything that can pick locks, disable traps and sneak around).
Warlock (already established what makes them different from wizards and sorcerers twice)
    Artificer: inventor with magic.
Cleric: healers, typically. But are really good against undead. Their spells are literally powered by faith, and are referred to as miracles.

"they would have just watched this thing happen, like fools." "Right?" I think this was probably the worst editing decision in the film. They chose to edit it cutting back between the group's plan unfolding, and Sophina's spell completing, I can only assume to hold onto the tension as long as possible, but it just makes the team's plan look pointless and unnecessary. If the stadium can empty that quickly there was no real threat to begin with. Instead, I'd like to believe they intended it to focus on the groups plan unfolding, cut to Forge and the ship, revealing the portal, and cut to sofina in the aristocrats' room AFTER showing people leaving the stadium to chase treasure. This would deflate the tension, but would make the group's plan meaningful, and would have a more comedic beat to Sofina's realization that she's casting her epic spell she's spent years preparing for an empty stadium.

The brain frog part.... generally in AD&D the mage has the high intelligence... meaning simon is a terrible mage. Paladins are charisma and strength so thats why they didnt attack the paladin.

    • @AznPhoenix95
      @AznPhoenix95 ปีที่แล้ว +3

it's stated repeatedly that Simon is very specifically a sorcerer though, sorcerer's magic is Charisma based. So they have a sorcerer, a bard, a barbarian, a druid and a paladin, none of them have Intelligence as a main stat.

I loved this movie it was such a fun ride. Its a shame it didnt do good at the box office and i would say its feminism done right, which is kinda crazy when a good example of it appears and the so called "feminists" are silent. The female lead doesn't fall in love with the MC, no pandering and making men useless and idiotic *ring of power flashbacks*. Both female Leads do most of the hand to hand fighting, the villain is a powerful female. It was great and a breathe of fresh air vs all this SJW pandering you see alot of in blockbuster movies.
