Two hours later, zzzz zzzzz I can lift my bike to make a ten minute repair. No disputing your craftsmanship and quality of your work, well done.

Andy's one of my life's 'little heroes' :-) Nicely done and pleased to see the R1 getting some TLC.

I'm so glad I watched that right to the end!
Also, everyone else makes this sort of thing look easy. This shows how much care it really took.

Nice design Andy. Also nicely cut video. You put a lot of effort into both.

Hi Andy what a wonderful cave to have. A Lathe, milling machine, welding gear. Looks like engineering heaven.
P.S. your bike lift demonstrated your fantastic alternative thinking / solutions.

Top work Andy. It's even more impressive now you don't need it :-)

I thought, I know I’ll watch this and make one,
Great if you got 200k worth of machinery and a mind like Einstein but I have neither.
    What a man

I tried to keep the design something that could be made with just a welder and a drill press. I chose not to do it that way, because I have the kit.
The linear slide design was very much aimed at being easy to make with basic tools. (You can buy the PTFE buttons off the shelf, they are sold for the ends of gudgeon / piston pins.)
The nut that pulls it up could be a couple of standard nuts, just welded on. (use two, in case the weld on one gives up....)

I think I might have done a steel plate bolted to floor.
A little water with a pump up sprayer makes a big difference when core drilling.

If you have issues with your drill and threaded rod ? , try a cheap winch mounted at the top , to a hook on your sliding frame , they work a treat , I used one for a log lift on a splitter .

Great video, I'm to build a new garage and was thinking of block and tackle to lift my bike but now I will probably build similar to yours but with a round main upright so I can swivel the horizontal leg into position and be able to swing the bike when in the air. Thanks

Must admit when I firs saw you putting the bike onto the stand i thought there seemed a lot of potential for hurting yourself if something went wrong and the bike tipped! But after that enjoyed watching the planning and building process! well done!!

Ramps have a ‘floating’ secondary nut so if the brass lift nut strips out it drops onto the secondary 👍

That's a rather good idea. I think I will implement it.

I was riveted to this video in anticipation of the end result and enjoying your work but... You left out a couple of the most critical points, where and how you supported on the bike and how the entire jack is fastened to the floor. Thanks for the inspiration though.
Oh, PS... fix that dumb mig handle hanger on the side of your work bench, drives me crazy. LoL

    • @andypughtube
      @andypughtube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The bike is supported by spigots in to the swingarm bolt (which is a hollow tube).
But: I saw someone else make a similar, but different, design and he picked up the holes in the frame where the top engine mount is, and then used the swingarm pivot purely as a torque reaction point. I am very much considering taking a leaf out of that book as that puts the lift point a bit further forward, so the bike is less nose-heavy when lifted.
The jack drops down in to a socket set in the concrete. That is made around the 10:51 mark.
The hook on the side of the bench is perfectly designed for my TIG torch, but terribly designed for the MIG.

A couple of suggestions for some improvements, if the bottom cross bar was removable or hinged you wouldn’t need a ramp also a front or rear wheel stand would hold the bike while fitting the various brackets and setting up the stand and bike to lift… otherwise good design

Nice job, i`m building a lift myself at the moment.
Did you use a lead screw or threaded rod? What size did you use and is it holding up OK?
    Thanks.

    • @andypughtube
      @andypughtube  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I used threaded rod, but it hasn't seen all that much use. If you can find a suitable Acme or trapezoidal screw I would certainly suggest using it as the screw on mine is a bit stiffer than I would like.

the only lacking feature is the two sets of tools on either side.
why is it that the allen key and the 10mm ALWAYS end up on the other side, just out of reach?

PRO: Bike is well rigged and is probably not moving nor falling. It's better than most tables.
CON: the amount of work, skills and effort to get the bike ready for lifting is making the device rather useless.

No, as the result of me specifying something that turned out to be inadequate could lead to injury or damage to someone's pride and joy.

Awesome job but.......tools alone....cost more than a Constands stand or Abba Skylift or other awesome motorcyle lift products on the market. 2nd....the amount of work and time spent just for a motorcyle lift diy is a no ty for me. If you wanted just a stand for the bike there are better, cheaper and faster options to diy. If you want to lift the bike to fix something just buy Abba Skylift for 460£ or EasyRider for 440£

But if you are suggesting I should have made his lift, then I disagree. You can't lift an R1 on a platform lift like that.
