I was waiting for this lesson up till now. I knew what modes 'basically' are, i.e., how they are just new roots/scale derived from a parent root/scale, but the way you introduced it through intervals and harmonized major scales in earlier lessons was really interesting and easy to grasp, rather than diving straight into complicated names. I am glad I hung in there. Thank you for teaching!

You are really generous to actually put out all this knowledge. I have learned a lot from your lessons in this series. Brilliant way of teaching music theory. Can't wait for your series on music theory for song writing

Hi Chad. I hope your doing good. I just wanted to know how this chord progression of You Need Me I Don't Need You by Ed Sheeran has 5 major chords in it. Its unbelievable...its such a unique progression. So the chord progression is E, G, A, C and D. So how do you see this chord progression being made in mode's point of view ? Thanks a lot Chad. You work is really great and its really weird that you are still underrated. You are a great teacher 👍

Hey, I'm not sure if you're still interested. But i believe he is using 5-chords in the song (the root and the perfect fifth with combinations of those). Thus he is just mimicking 5 major chords, when in reality it's just in the key of C :)

I'd love someone who knows this much about modes to sit down with me and go through questions I have about what I struggle to understand . For example I know the major scale across the fret board but is it as simple as starting and and ending on the root next to the root before .i.e for Dorian you start and on the maj 2nd. Are the scale shapes different in different modes?

nick williams Yes, it is that simple. The notes remain the same but you shift the tonal center and doing so you will automatically get a different intervallic structure which will give you the characteristic feel of each mode. To avoid confusion, the first mode would be "C Ionian", the second "D Dorian", the third E Phrygian, etc...The parent major scale of these modes is "C". Now, if you had " C Ionian" and "C Myxolidian" these two modes do not share the same parent major scale, dig?

This just answered the questions I posed in the previous video. Thank you.

So all that's happening is you're soloing over a chord of a given key with its own respective notes? E.G - If I was playing a C chord, I would play the notes C E G in some improvised fashion over it? Isn't this the same as arppegiating the notes of whatever chord is being played in order to emphasize that chord?
